Till skillnad från de hundra kungadömenas feodala skyldigheter har stadsstaterna anammat ett högre ideal för sitt folk och sina väpnade styrkor. Huvuddelen av deras armé består av hopliter, medborgarsoldater som samlats för att skydda sin stad och dess intressen.
