Casually described as a curtain raiser, For the President's Own is a spirited work that offers virtuosic challenges for every section of the band and represents a stunning addition tothe repertoire for mature bands. The Golden Age of the Xylophone

Premiered by Randy Eyles and The United States Air Force Band, this ragtime novelty xylophone solo with band accompaniment has been performed around the world. In 1987 it was performed during a live radio broadcast in China to anestimated audience of 60 million! Golden Age is a medley of eight tunes that were favorites of the 1900's. A true “Show Stopper,” The Golden Age of the Xylophone is sure to become a popular favorite with bands aroundthe world. Standard instrumentation, medium (band), difficult (solo).

Symphony No. 9, Op. 160 : for Large Wind Band

Premiered on September 21, 2018 in Lawrence, Kansas by the University of Kansas Wind Ensemble (Dr. Paul Popiel, conducting), James Barnes' Ninth Symphony was composed between January and late June of that same year. This large work was commissioned by a consortium of twenty-one college bands, community bands, professional bands and individuals to help mark the 70th birthday of the composer (b. 1949). It is an expansive forty-minute work in four movements, of which the composer writes, This is my last symphony... this work represents a compendium of all that I have learned during the fifty years of composing and scoring for this wonderful new medium: the modern wind band. The first movement, subtitled Elegy, is based around G minor. It is the longest movement of the symphony. Tragic and despondent in character, it is cast in sonata-allegro form. The second movement is entitled Scherzo. Barnes claims that I have always wanted to write a waltz, and that is how this movement is cast, in a modified rondo form in D minor. In contrast to the mood of the first movement, the scherzo is a delightful posy of expansive melody, splashy color, humor and rhythm. The third movement, which is in a modified tertiary form, is entitled Night Music. In contrast to the scherzo, this movement begins with a mysterious incantation, first displayed by solo Alto flute. The music becomes even darker and more mysterious, while overall the movement effectively expresses an otherworldly mood, ending with a solo soprano offstage which suddenly emerges, eerily singing a modified version of the opening incantation. Cast in sonata-allegro form, the fourth movement is most definitely a rousing Finale, beginning with a brilliant fanfare and undergoing several mood transformations before emerging into the final coda, ending the symphony with an energetic splash of color.

Dutch Masters Suite : for Wind Orchestra

For this exciting work Johan de Meij took his inspiration from Rembrandt’s The Night Watch, Vermeer’s Love Letter and Steen’s Prinsjesdag. In the first movement the solo trombone keeps watch at night, whilst in the second movement lyrical lute music accompanies Vermeer’s Love Letter. The third movement takes place in a tavern, where the drinking, singing and (increasingly inarticulate) music take place. An epilogue from the watchful trombone brings the piece to a peaceful end. This new work by Johan de Meij was the set-piece for 2nd division concert bands at the 16th WMC in Kerkrade 2009.

The Wild Rumpus

Score and Parts. Grade 5 Winner of the prestigious 1999 Schirmer competition for young composers, this significant work with expanded instrumentation brings Stephen Beck to the forefront of contemporary literture for bands. The Wild Rumpus was inspired by the childrens book, Where The Wild Things Are, by Maurice Sendak. Near the middle of the story, the hero, a young boy named Max, discovers the world of the Wild Things, and is crowned king of the Wild Things. At that point, Max shouts Let the wild rumpus start! Composed in two movements - I. Howling, Swinging and II. Marching.

Sollicitus for Brass band and Percussion

The latin title «Sollicitus» means upset or uneasy is important in terms of the character and form of the work. This work contains several different pcarts, all of them based around a fanfare-like theme which is presented several times. This theme change it’s character, form, tonality, rhytmic and tension throughout the piece which triggers the turbulence of the music. «Sollicitus» is a commission for Midtun Skoles Musikkorps and their conductor Christian Breistein for their participation in the Norwegian Championships for School Bands in 2017. The version for Brass Band was written to Laksevåg Musikkforening for their participation at the Norwegian Brass Band Championships 2018.

Bulgarian Dances : In Memoriam Alfred Reed

Bulgarian Dances is a free rhapsody, divided into four distinct movements based on famous Bulgarian folk songs. These songs have a very old tradition and stem from both the antique world of Byzantium and even earlier in the ancient and mysterious civilization of the Thrace region. In the beginning they were monodic songs, then diaphonic, with characteristic dissonances of major and minor seconds which make them unique. What also makes these songs so fascinating are seductive and complex irregular rhythms. The composer, while remaining faithful to the original spirit of the songs, has not hesitated to broaden the musical ideas, enriching them and making them more suitable tothe rich palette of colours of contemporary concert bands. A terrific modern addition to the band repertoire.

When the band reaches its first dynamic climax it is as if the massive boulders are audible, even touchable through the use of minor 3rd chords. The main theme - constructed on the notes CAFBG symbolises the arrangement of the central boulders in the shape of a horseshoe, which forms the focal point of this huge collection of stones. Towards the end of the work you will experience a fantastic effect when five soloists play a five part hymn whilst other members of the band create a specialatmosphere by imitating a choir of monks and druids. A fantastic major new concert work for advanced bands.
