Friendly Takeover

Friendly Takeover was composed for the 2016 Swiss Wind Band Convention in Montreux. In this three movement piece the composer experiments with lyrical motives combined with rhythmical pulses in different meters throughout the piece. In the finale, the musical scene is taken over completely by groove-based rhythms. This takeover, however, is of a friendly nature, as the various beats are not being conceived as rivals of the lyrical motives, but are rather supposed to infuse energy and vitality to the latter. Piano Trio The Chronophage

Acceleration, deceleration, and the inconsistent nature of time are at the heart Piano Trio "The Chronophage" by Tom Coult. Throughout the 17-minute work, cello and piano lines constantly speed up or slow down relative to one another, whilst the violin has only one role – to accelerate throughout. The listener feels clunky gear changes, as previously reliable demarcations of time seem unsteady – even unsafe. The trio’s subtitle comes from The Corpus Clock in Cambridge, a clock that plays with exactly this perception. Completely accurate every five minutes, the clock lurches unevenly from second to second, the grinding mechanism driven by the terrifying metal insect escapement known as the ‘Chronophage’ (from the Greek meaning ‘time-eater’).

Trois Esquisses  is a series of three pieces for Piano named after the elements. Composed by Masayuki Nagatomi , it is quite a difficult series to play and it requires some advanced skills and abilities. The total duration of the set is 5'30 minutes. The pieces are:  1. Wind - which main theme represents a soft and quiet breeze, 1'30 2. Fire - fast and violent, which can destroy everything, and which depicts the flames sometimes big and sometimes smaller, 1'30 3. Water and Earth - really slow to start with, this part sounds like a river flowing quietly, with some part of acceleration The most difficult aspect of this series will probably be to give the correct execution for the audience to recognise each element.

Solo Guitar can be a beautiful instrument in worship. However, the Guitar as a solo instrument is rarely used. These compositions and arrangements were written to provide pieces for just that purpose. All are very lyrical in nature and allow for a maximum of expression. The guitarist should feel comfortable in freely interpreting these pieces, taking full advantage of tone, dynamics and various tempos. None of the solos should be performed in a hurried manner although most of the works contain sections where tempo acceleration and ritard are appropriate. These solos will work well as preludes, graduals and offertories. In addition the back of the book contains solos on some of my favourite communion pieces. I hope you enjoy playing these and that they convey beauty and inspiration to the player and worship participant.

This composition is based on the children’s song ‘Three Blind Mice’, of which the melody is featured in a range of variations: in a canon, in inversion, in minor, transformed, with changing harmonisations and orchestrations, andin different times and tempi. The work consists of three continuous, contrasting movements: 1) Mouse March: The mice cheerfully set off while the original melody is presented as a march. - 2) Hymn: In a tuneful hymn,the wonderful praises of the life of mice are sung. - 3) Catch Me If You Can: In an animated chase, the farmer’s wife is trying to catch the mice. Following a stirring acceleration, she cuts off their tails in accordancewith the lyrics of the song. I hope this work, with its humorous touch, will be a welcome contribution to the expansion of interesting repertoire for the lower divisions. - Bert Appermont

Greensleeves GeWV 261 : Variations on an Old Folk Song

Commissioned by the Schott publishing house, the present variations on the song Greensleeves were written in 2000 by Genzmer who seized on the suggestion to write a cycle of variations on this OldEnglish melody which had often served as a theme for variations in music history, as for example in the famous anonymous cycle 'Greensleeves to a ground' (around 1700). Genzmer keeps the theme simple, yetwith great virtuosity and original harmony. All parts are written in a linear fashion. The four variations observe, almost in a classical manner, the principle of increasing differentiation and acceleration oftherhythm.Variation 1 uses crotchets and quavers as well as semiquaver triplets, whereas Variation 2 uses semiquavers throughout and Variation 3 the somewhat faster semiquaver triplets. Variation 4 stays on this fastrhythmic level with semiquavers and semiquaver triplets. A rewarding piece for the 'Jugend musiziert' competition as well as for advanced lessons.

The Graces of Love : Le Gratie d'Amore

“The Graces of Love” (Le Gratie d’Amore) is the title of a book published in 1602 by Cesare Negri, the famous dance master of the Milan court in the Renaissance. It contains numerous dance tunes and precise descriptions of courtly dances. It also includes the tune Il bianco fior (The White Flower) on which the first movement of my piece is based. A vigorous dance in three-four, it leads to an acceleration and a sudden shift to an even meter towards the end. The second movement, calm and contemplative in character, features the tune Vaghe bellezze ... (Veiled Beauty …). Widely spaced melodic parts surround two solos during which the tune is varied anddeveloped. Finally, the third movement contains a Saltarello based on a tune by Vincenzo Galilei, the father of the famous astronomer, Galileo Galilei. It brings the work to a close with a hypnotic rhythm which is noble and virtuosic at the same time.
