The tone poem Pohjola?s Daughter Op.49 - a ?Symphonic Fantasy for Large Orchestra? - was written by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius in 1906. The story is a variation of Orpheus in the Underworld, depicting a hero (Väinämöinen) who spotted the beautiful ?daughter of the North? (Pohjola), seated on a rainbow. The hero asked her to join him, but she agreed with the condition that he should be able to perform a number of difficult tasks ? most notably, building a boat from fragments of her distaff. However the hero?s attempt was in vain, as he was thwarted by evil spirits and injured himself with an axe. He gave up the challenge and continued his journey alone.A full score for Prokofiev?s popular Kalevala-inspired symphonic poem Pohjola?s Daughter Op.49.

The first page of the autograph of the Mass K.49 (47d) bears below the author’s name the crossed-out (autograph?) suffix “in Wien” (“in Vienna”). “1768” and “in Wien” havebeen added by two other unidentified, eighteenth-century hands.Mozart’s handwriting and the paper quality appear to verify this information. Moreover, Mozart sketched the draft of the Gloria (measures 1 to 18) on apiece of paper, the reverse side of which his father had used, undoubtedly before that, for the fair copy of the piano score of aria no. 11 from Bastien et Bastienne K. 50 (46). In Leopold Mozart’s list of works composedbyWolfgang up to 1768, “Eine kleinere Messe a 4 vocibus 2 Violinis &c” (“a small Mass with 4 voices, 2 violins, etc.”) appears as the penultimate entry; the year 1768 was added by Mozart’s sister.Although the obbligato viola is not mentioned there, this comnposition is surely the Mass K.49.- Urtext of the New Mozart Edition- Full score, performance material (BA4769) and vocal score (BA4769-90) available forsale.

Rued Langgaard (1893-1952) is one of the most important Danish composers of the 20th century. He has, however, only acquired this status many years after his death. Langgaard was an eminent musical talent, but with his romantic and symbolist view of art he ended up as an outsider in an era when the trend-setting musical life of the time was permeated by Carl Nielsen's sober and modern attitude.Rued Langgaard's production within the lied genre comprises 125 songs. Half of them were composed in the short span of years between 1914 and 1918, when the composer was in his early twenties.With this publication in three volumes, Langgaard's important and personal contribution to the genre is presented in its entire range. Only 27 of the songs have previously been pub- lished. The songs are set to German, Danish and Norwegian poems. The poems in Danish and Norwegian are included in an English translation (though not designed for perform- ance purposes). Each volume is accompanied by an introduction, source descriptions and a critical apparatus in Danish and English. The Rued Langgaard Edition (RLU) was established in 2000, the aim being to present practical, performance-oriented publications of Langgaard's works on a critical scholarly basis.

Kirchner, a volatile seeker after truth, became, as a composer, a master of transient visions. His importance lies in his piano music. His work com-prises about a thousand individual pieces. Schumann, his revered and adored friend, proved initially to be an overpowering idol, and Kirchner gave his works titles like ‘Neue Davidsbündlertänze’, ‘Neue Kinderscener’. Subsequently other highly idiosyncratic titles reveal more about the special characteristics of his own style. ‘Federzeichnungen’ (Pen and Ink Sketches) and ‘Im Zwielicht’ (In the Gloaming) point to a life between two worlds and show a fragility which gives Kirchner’s works their own particular charm. Thetwo volumes of the ‘Neue Albumblätter’ (New Albumleaves) are witness to this fragile world. These transient sketches move in the lower dynamic range. Modulations, shifting chords and enharmonic changes lead the listener astray; formal expectations are disappointed. Our edition is based on the original two volumes published by Augener in 1880 and reissued by Schott in 1911 under a new title.
