An American Song

An American Song is a collage that portrays the motto e pluribus unum by combining several dozen American tunes into a single whole. Fragments of hymns, spirituals, show tunes, jazz standards, country and western ballads, folk songs, and classical compositions are set into the collage like thin, translucent glazes, producing a musical surface that evokes the greatness and the struggle inherent in the American identity, at times clearly and at times dimly, through a haze of memory and association.

Loch Ness

The symphonic poem ‘Loch Ness’ consists of five through-composed impressions of this mysterious Scottish Lake. I) The Lake At Dawn - calm, static, sonorous blocks depict the troubled opaque water surface and the enormous depth of the Lake at daybreak. II) Slowly the rising early-morning mist reveals the distant ruins of Urquhart Castle, represented by a solemn theme in the trombones which is taken over by the full band, thus evoking the illustrious past of this fortress besieged so many times. III) Inverness: Bagpipes and Tourists - the music takes us down to the town of Inverness where the first tourists mark the slow but steady start of a new season to the sound of a Scottishmelody. IV) Storm - suddenly a heavy wheater breaks: fierce gusts of wind and heavy showers transform the erstwhile calm surface into an obscure and whirling mass of water, and clouds rapidly passing over offer an eery scene... V) Conclusion - storm and rain gradually decrease and when everything is quiet again we are granted a last view of the Lake in its full glory.

Fanfare - HAYABUSA

Developed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), the Hayabusa asteroid probe returned to earth on June 13, 2010, completing its mission as the first ever spacecraft to obtain surface samples from an asteroid. Thisfanfare was commissioned by the band of NEC Tamagawa, conducted by Ikuo Inagaki, to commemorate the success of the Hayabusa mission. At the premiere performance in Minato Ward, Tokyo, the piece was so successful the audiencedemanded it be performed again as an encore. Dur: 2:30 (Grade 4)

Liquid

Commissioned by the North Carolina South Central District Bandmasters Association, Liquid portrays the many different ways that water moves around us. From the opening raindrops and first few notes upon which the piece is built, this fast-paced and engaging work takes us through a series of variations that depict cascading waterfalls, flowing rivers, crashing waves, trickling creeks, and ripples over the surface of a calm lake. The piece culminates with a thunderous setting of the 13th-century Latin hymn Dies Irae, or Day of Wrath. Dur: 5:30

Ceresio

The Ceresio, also called Lugano Lake, is located in the sub-alpine area between Lake Como and Lake Maggiore. Two-thirds of its surface is on Swiss territory, while the remaining one-third belongs to Italy. The lake has a peculiar shape, sinuous and characteristic for its unevenness. Along its shores, there are numerous tourist sites such as the city of Lugano, which stands out for its beauty. Commissioned in 2001 by the Lugano Police to celebrate their 100th anniversary, Ceresio is a piece with a Latin flavour, which is especially noticeable in the trio section.

Poul Ruders: Gong (Score)

The word GONG is saturated with associations: the splendour of the Orient, mysticism, drama, loud metallic clangour, violent impact, etc. The present piece draws upon all those connotations, but it is primarily a symphonic drama about the life and behaviour of the sun, our closest star and prime source of life on Earth. Describing the sun in music is not a new idea, of course; during a visit to Greece, Carl Nielsen was inspired by the orbit of the sun and its very un-Danish ferocity and thus wrote the "Helios Overture". GONG is a "Helios Overture" too, of sorts, albeit more abstract. Recent astronomical research shows, that the surface of the sun reverberates like a gong, in four different, simultaneous tempi (not directly depicted in the score, though); the sun looks like a GONG, - the O in the written work looks like the sun; there is even a solar research group called GONG (Global Oscillation Network Group). Formally the composition follows the life and fate of the sun, from the initial explotional birth through the hyper-activity as energy source as we know it today to the final, predicted flaring up and collapse into a so-called "white dwarf". But - being a musical composition, not an astrophysical thesis - GONG is brought to its compositional conclusion by a "real concert-ending", a chord taken from the middle of the piece and sustained over several bars, from virtual nothingness to full force.
