Following the melancholy theme of mourning in a minor key we also hear the happy memories in major key and also the knowledge that the person who has gone to ‘a better place’ is now at peace. This is a soulful and calm work that leaves plenty of space for the musicians’ and listeners’ own thoughts. This set includes optional parts for piano and vibraphone.

Rendezvous with the Other Side

The composer's most ambitious symphonic work to date, this adventurous and powerful composition takes the listener through a collage of moods and interwoven sound textures. The opening and closing sections are propelled withrhythmic vitality and energy, while the middle slow section includes an important piano part along with unique woodwind and horn colors. The percussion writing is stunning and features expanded mallet parts and driving ostinatos.This exciting work is contemporary sounding and makes a bold statement for mature bands. (6:30)

Pasadena

This piece takes you on a journey to the sunny Californian city of Pasadena. The piece reflects two contrasting aspects of the city,. Firstly the serene expressive side with exquisite statues, works of art and sun drenched villas and secondly the hot Latin side with the street parade which leads up to the famous American Football final in the Rose Bowl stadium.

Moonlight Serenade

Moonlight Serenade is often said to be the Glenn Miller Orchestra’s signature tune, capturing the very best of what it had to offer. It was recorded for the first time in 1939 and only made the B-side of the disc with Sunrise Serenade featuring on the A-side. Moonlight Serenade gained very rapid and unexpected success and this arrangement will give your concert band that famous big band sound!

Gudmundsen-holmgreen Triptykon Percussion Concerto Conductor's Score

Triptykon for Percussion and Orchestra was composed by Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen in 1985. Dedicated to Gert Mortensen. Programme note: TRIPTYKON is inspired by the visual arts (a triptych is a painting on three panels, hinged side by side - for instance an altarpiece). The three movements of TRIPTYKON are composed in an eff ort to create clear contrasts of colour. The first movement employs only winds in the orchestra, the second movement only strings, and in the third movement the first two movements are repeated, on top of each other, played simultaneously. Tue percussion solo part has equally distinct colours: for the first movement: metal only, for the second movement: wood only, and then finally in the third movement- together with the orchestral tutti - skin! Other distinct features in TRIPTYKON are block-like dispositions, polyrhythmic layers and simplicity of tonal colours. Tue often crude articulation of motifs and the frequent use ofrepetition lend a ritual character to the music. TRIPTYKON was composed in close collaboration with percussionist Gert Mortensen and the work is dedicated to him.

Serpent Sea : 4th Movement of The Seas of the Moon

The fourth movement of Robert Buckley's grandly cinematic suite describing impressions of the seas of the moon, Serpent Sea is animated, exuberant and somewhat over-the-top. It was inspired by the idea of two huge winged serpents rising out of the waves and frolicking together in a wild, barbaric dance. The pair do, however, show a more graceful side every once in a while - represented by an exotic theme that starts in the clarinet and flute. The movement ends with a wild flurry as the serpents vanish back into the sea. Dur: 3:50

Orientales

This music depicts “tales” from the “Orient” and conjures up a pot pourri of oriental dances, scents and spices. These are contrasted with the darker side of some Eastern countries such as poverty, war and oppression - aspects from which people find escape in art and music. This piece is both thought-provoking and enjoyable.

Festive Overture

Festive Overture was composed in 1954 to commemorate the 37th birthday of the October Revolution of 1917. With this overture Shostakovich shows his brighter side, in contrast to his melancholy 10th symphony written in the previous year. The premiere of this piece took place on November 6, 1954 at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. Shostakovich makes great use of different themes which he alternates and intermingles in a masterly way. This skilful transcription by Tohru Takahashi retains all the grandeur of the original.

Mambo Americano

Mambo Americano is a homage to the composers of the golden age of mambo. Compositions such as those of Perez Prado or Leonard Bernstein’s Mambo from West Side Story of the 1950s are an established part of our contemporary music world—and it’s exactly this era that is conjured up for the audience in Mambo Americano!

A Midwest Fanfare was commissioned by the Brass Band of Battle Creek and premiered by them during their appearance at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago on 20th December 2017 where this fanfare was the opening piece of the entire event. This piece is designed to be played with the cornets split into two teams either side of the band. It opens with the two groups answering each other antiphonally over a repeated figure in the lower band. A calmer central section introduces a euphonium solo which is then taken up by the whole ensemble. Step by Step was commissioned by the Sony Concert Band to celebrate their 60th anniversary in 2018. Step by Step is an up-tempo concert march. The title was chosen as it has obvious associations with marching but also as a salute to the constant improvement and development that makes the products of Sony Corporation famous around the world.
