Five years after the release of the monster album Thriller, which sold a record-breaking 105 million copies worldwide up to this date, this second single from the album Bad, released in 1987, also peaked at number one on the Billboard chart. This song was performed during Michael’s first solo world tour that started from Japan (Korakuen Stadium) in September 1987. The short film directed by Martin Scorsese also generated great publicity. In particular, the animated group dance scene in the subway made a huge impact on the viewers and distinguished Michael’s image. As the video depicts, “bad” in this song’s lyrics indicate the kicking, cool unruly living on thestreets. As the opening number, Bad strikes out a course of slight-but-right edginess with its dynamically groovy arrangement that underscores the electric funk in the original tune. The Ecstasy of Gold is the famous theme from the movie The Good, The Bad and The Ugly that leads up to and is heard during the movie’s climax, the showdown! Since 1983, heavy-metal band Metallica have been opening concerts with Morricone’s dramatic and exciting song, The Ecstasy of Gold. Even without the effective choreography of the musicians, Call of the Valley is an impressive concert band composition.

I Just Can't Stop Loving You

This number topped the U.S. chart as the lead release single from Bad. Siedah Garrett, who sang the duet, was a protégé of Quincy Jones with whom Michael tag-teamed for three solos on Off the Wall. (Garrett is also renowned as one of the writers of the song Man in the Mirror,” the fourth single which carries a strong message.) Japanese fans still remember this song being performed as an encore during the Bad World Tour in 1987. The straightforward, sweet love song starts out quietly and gradually takes on heat, unfolding a wonderful musical sentiment. The performance of the arranged version also strikes the audience with an imposing world of sound comparableto that of a full orchestra.

The song went straight into the Top 10 of pop charts around the world and has since become one of Jackson’s best loved hits. Three-Eight Charlie : The Incredible Adventure of Jerrie Mocke

In 1964, the American aviator Jerrie Mock was the first woman to fly solo around the world, in spite of her critics and the bad weather forecasted. She completed this journey in 29 days on board the “Spirit of Columbus”, a singleengine Cessna. This story inspired Marc Jeanbourquin. The aviator’s determined nature appears from the very first bars, reflecting her mood before take-off. The hymn that follows illustrates the beginning of the flight, when allis going well. This leads to a calmer section, as if the aviator was letting herself be carried by the air currents above the clouds, lost in her thoughts. Then a more energetic passage brings her back inside the cockpit toconfront the bad weather she encounters. She overcomes these difficulties to appear out of the clouds before a cheerful finale, as if nearing the finishing line. Welcome aboard for a flight around the world! First prize in thecomposition competition of the Swiss Music Association (Contest music 4th category 2020).

Jubilate! : Waldkircha in Musica

Jubilate’s main theme comes from the Gregorian chant on the Psalm Jubliate Deo omnis terra. The work itself was inspired by the sacredhistory of the Waldkirch (a forest village) community, located on the Swiss/German boarder. It tells a tale of the Irish and Scottish monks who build the first wooden church at the site of what is now Waldkirch, of the dramatic events, good and bad, that have taken place over the centuries and of the flourishing community that has withstood the trials of time.

The Butterfly That Stamped : Le Papillon qui tapait du pied

The Butterfly that Stamped is a story from the anthology Just So Stories, written by Rudyard Kipling for his daughter who suffered constant bad health. The book inspired composer Maxim Aulio to compose this work which is in a French impressionistic style. The piece opens with a beautiful palace surrounded by the impressive gardens of King Solomon. It is in these gardens that the baritone saxophone makes its appearance representing King Solomon himself, the flute representing the butterfly couple, the clarinet representing Queen Balkis and the trumpet the djin.

Dreamcatcher

Once upon a time in North America, there lived a mother and her small daughter who were part of a community of Ojibwa people. The girl suffered from severe nightmares. The mother sought help from ‘Spider Woman’ also known as ‘Asibikaashi’, who protected people by weaving a magical web. This ‘dreamcatcher’, decorated with sacred feathers, only let good dreams through, and the bad dreams were burnt by the morning sunbeams. During this fascinating programme work, one can follow the story meticulously, making it a true phantasmal concert experience!

Yee-Haw! : A Rollicking Western Adventure

Come on, dudes and dudettes! Join us for a rollicking western adventure - ride the open range, have a rough 'n' tumble hootenanny, share a tale and a song or two, and sleep under the stars. This 35-minute musical adventure features seven songs with rhyming narration and 39 speaking parts adaptable to various cast sizes. The Teacher Edition includes piano/vocal arrangements with choreography, script, helpful production guide and digital access to PDFs of singer songsheets, lyric sheets and narrations. To perform with recordings, there are 2 options. For cost-saving value, the Performance Kit/Audio Access includes the Teacher Edition w/singer PDFs and digital access toperformance/accompaniment audio recordings. The dialog is not recorded. Songs include: Yee-Haw, Home on the Range in Montana, Giddy-Up, The Cowboy Code, Billy the Bad, Under the Stars, Until We Meet Again. Approx. 35 minutes. Hora Est

Hora Est! (Latin for ‘it is time!’) was composed to bid adieu to Sjoerd de Boer’s following forty years as conductor of the Chr. Fanfare Band, based in the town of Wjelsryp in the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, this small phrase, hora est, is traditionally said upon awarding a university doctorate at graduation ceremonies. The composition was written with Sjoerd de Boer firmly in mind, mirroring various aspects of his life. The main motif of the work consists of three notes, forming his initials: S (Eb) – D – B. At a certain point, the music is interrupted by a thunderstorm and heavy rain (forever a bad omen: the debut for this work took place a day after such a deluge, but fortunately their open-air concert was met with clear blue skies.) The fanfare then plays an Italianesque march, with the motif of de Boer’s initials interwoven throughout. The work re-uses this motif twice towards the end of the piece – as one might expect, by the saxophones – to create a festive, driven and virtuosic atmosphere. Finally, the work comes to an end with the initials motif played across the ensemble in complete unison. The powerful closing chords symbolise a fond farewell to de Boer: a driven and extremely capable conductor whose musical mark on Concordia will be felt for years to come. Hora Est! is suitable as a contest piece and would be a definite highlight for any upcoming concert.
