Variations on a Chord

Variations on a Chord was composed on the occasion of the second lustrum of the Dutch Brass Band Championships celebrated in 1990. The piece is the immediate sequel to Contrasten a piece which was composed in 1986, and which is performed all over the world. Not only was the final chord of this previous work used as a starting point for the new composition, but Variations on a Chord is also the first concert piece for brass band composed by Jan de Haan since then. The several variations are based on a solemn theme. The so-called minor-major seventh chord is easily detectable. The structure of the piece is such that the lyrical theme is preceded by a majestic introduction, and isfollowed by eight variations each strongly contrasting in character. The piece finishes in a short but extremely spectacular coda.

The Police on Stage

British rock band The Police enjoyed their greatest successes during the early 1980’s. The group’s members were Stewart Copeland, Andy Summer and Gordon Sumner, who went on to enjoy a massive solo career as Sting. Stefan Schwalgin’s medley, The Police on Stage, brings together some of the trio’s biggest hits: Roxanne, De Doo Doo Doo De Da Da Da, Every Breath You Take and Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic.

Knock on Wood was originally recorded in 1966 by Eddie Floyd, who wrote the song together with Steve Cropper. Since then, the song has been covered in literally every decade by famous artistes - including David Bowie, Cher, Eric Clapton and Michael Bolton - so that this hit really spans the generations and appeals to every audience.

Back on Track

Back on Track is a spectacular composition for Concert Band. Otto M. Schwarz composed an opening fanfare for the beginning, which can also be played as a short ‘teaser’ at festive events. A motif is treated through various rhythms and time signatures and leads to an epic finale, splendidly brought to life by the glorious timbres of the brass.

The Bridge on the Border is a European bridge connecting the German city of Kehl to the French city of Strasbourg. This piece tells the passionate story of German and French lovers who meet at the bridge on the eve of war. Fortunately, this story has a happy ending, with enemies becoming friends, no longer separated by the river between them!

Night on Bald Mountain

The symphonic poem Night on a Bald Mountain took its inspiration from a story by the well known Russian writer Nicola Gogol. Mussorgsky took no steps to promote his masterpiece and it was only after his death when Rimsky-Korsakov was looking through the enormous stack of manuscripts that the work resurfaced. Written above the score, Mussorgsky gives a brief description of the story of Night on a Bald Mountain: Gathering Witches, their gossip and chit-chat; The Procession of Satan; Pagan Worship of Satan and Witches Sabbath. This transcription for concert band by Tohru Takahasi remains true to the orchestral original.

Reflections on Paris

Reflections on Paris is the result of the composer's visit to the city in the summer of 1972. During one day of his stay in the city, he had the occasion to visit the Louvre, after which he strolled through the Tuileries Gardens,past the Place de la Concorde and up the Grand Avenue des Champs-Elysees to the Arc de Triomphe. The specific impressions of this excursion gave rise to the present programmatic composition. (15:00)

Variations on an Austrian Folksong

Hot off the press! Composer Gerald Oswald bases this new work on an old Austrian folksong, O du lieber Augustin! The Augustin in questions is a ballad singer and an ad lib poet who apparently wrote this folksong about himself. His grim sense of humour and his attitude towards life, that humour can get you through anything, are readily apparent in this new piece. Gerald Oswald’s Variations on an Austrian Folk Song received top honours at the 2010 Austrian Composition Contest.
