Hidamari : Rhapsody for Wind Orchestra

Edelweiss Brass Orchestra is a Japanese concert band based in the heart of Tokyo, Japan. Founded in 1978, the ensemble has grown from musical strength to strength and in 2018 they commissioned a new work with Jan Van der Roost for their 40th anniversary concert. The title Hidamari could loosely be translated as “In the Sunshine”. A short quote from the famous musical The Sound of Music (you got it, ‘Edelweiss’!) is a subtle nod to the name of the commissioning ensemble. Ready - Steady - Brass! is one of a number of successful works by Otto M. Schwarz such as Last Call, Funky Winds, Glory Fanfare and Groove Machine. Starting with a fanfare-style opening the music takes a journey through melodicsections and technical, soloistic passages to a grandiose finale.

The Path Ascending

Weaving together currents of inspiration and darkness, this work dramatically portrays a woman whose life was cut short by cancer. A chorale-like theme anchors the music in strength and faith, while a tune inspired by mariachi bands recalls her youth in a Texas border town.

Chant of the Phoenix : Quarter Military Band QMB 543

Chant of the Phoenix is based on the legend of the sacred bird in Egyptian religion. After living for 500 years, the Phoenix would build a nest of herbs, fan the nest with its wings to set it afire, and burn itself to death. Fromthe ashes would emerge a new bird which, after maturing and testing its strength in flight, would soar off to the sun. (9:00)

Lions of Legends

This work was commissioned by Eurofestival. Ever since antiquity, mankind has been fascinated by the lion: symbolising courage, strength and temperance. Many have made use of the lion to represent themselves in symbols and emblems. In five movements the composer describes both the history of the lion throughout centuries, as well as the characteristics. A challenging idea to turn into music! The final movement ‘King of Kings’ is extremely spectacular. A great choice for thematic concerts or as a main piece in your concert or contest.

Requiem

Joseph Martin Kraus [1756 1792] composed his Requiem in 1775at the age of 19 for the parish church in his hometown of Buchen, Odenwald. This followed the Miserere of 1773, and is the second of his surviving sacred compositions. Already in this early work Kraus shows that he was a representative of the musical “Sturm und Drang.” With all its youthful unconcern towards compositional technique, this music displays his seriousness and strength of expression, together with a dark instrumental timbre, as well as an abruptness or at times brusqueness. The publication of the Requiem in the Complete Edition is the first historical and critical edition of the work

To a Friend

When you have been playing in a band for a long time, you will know that music belongs to the most beautiful moments in life, but also to the roughest times. Making music together can give you strength when things are difficult.To a Friend is a wonderfully comforting work for anyone going through a dark time. Jacob de Haan composed the work for his father in law, Gerard Bosch, a musician to the core. The piece received its first performance justweeks before his passing. On a sun-kissed evening, his friends, the musicians of his two music societies Oefening Baart Kunst (Practice Makes Perfect) Otterlo, and the Reünie Orkest Artillerie Trompetterkorps (Reunion BandArtillery Trumpet Corps) played the work for Gerard - an unknowing yet beautiful goodbye.

Dance of the Knights from Romeo and Juliet

This publication marks the first-ever symphonic wind band edition of the Dance of the Knights, from Scene 2 Capulet's Ball of Prokofiev's ballet Romeo and Juliet. [The ballet] led to one of the most beloved dance works in the repertory and a series of famous orchestral suites... but the celebrated legacy of Romeo and Juliet belies its tortured history: It left Prokofiev broken and emerged from a period that left many of his colleages dead. Nathan Jones' scoring for symphonic wind band faithfully captures the magic of the original orchestraion of this famous work, which has been heard in numerous films and TV shows, including The Simpsons, Warm Machine, GoodMorning Britain and Gotham, among many others. This piece is an ideal opener or closer for intermediate to advanced band.

A Finnish Rhapsody : Quarter Military Band QMB 481

The opening measured of Clare Grundman's A Finnish Rhapsody are base on Oi kallis Suomenmaa (O Blessed Fatherland), an old South Bothnian melody beloved of the whole Finnish nation. The words of this song epitomize each Finn'snoblest duty, the readiness to sacrifice all in defense of his country's liberty. Next is an episode based on Kesäilta (Summer Evening), one of the loveliest of Finnish folk songs, being as delightfully tranquil as the Finnishcountryside. Following this is a section based on the lively folk tune, Talon Tyttö (The Country Lass), a mirthful love song about a peasant maid and her swain. This leads into the majestic Finlandia Hymn, created by Jan Sibelius.The work closes with the return of Oh, Blessed Fatherland, with all its strength and grandeur. (5:30)

Like the Eagle, We Soar and Rise : A Tone Poem for Wind Orchestra

Like the Eagle, We Soar and Rise was commissioned by Yuying Secondary School Concert Band and Yuying Alumni Association for the 2010 centenary of the school’s foundation. The piece was named by a friend of the composer named Steven Phua, who originally suggested commissioning a new piece to Satoshi Yagisawa. The piece furthermore takes its name from the text of the Yuying Secondary School song.This composition is based on three different concepts: the first one demonstrates ‘The founders’ passion for education’; the second concept illustrates ‘Hardship in war time’; the third one ‘To the future’ describes the inner strength people find to overcome struggles. Thispiece concludes with a fanfare, which is the sound of hope that leads to a brighter future in a positive direction.The world premiere of this piece was conducted by Faizal Bin Othman, who is one of the leading educators in Singapore, and was performed by the Yuying Secondary School Concert Band.

I Vespri Siciliani : Ouverture

In 1854, Verdi was in Paris to compose I vespri siciliani (1855), a commission from the Theatre of the Opera. The composer soon became intolerant to the requests of the French “Grand Opéra” as he considered them too restrictive and cunning. “I’ll be very happy when I have finished I vespri siciliani. An opera at the Opéra is as tiring as killing a bull. Five hours of music?…Hauf!” Verdi declared. Following the first performance, the French composer Hector Berlioz wrote in the “Journal des Débats” an article that read “We have to admit that in I vespri siciliani, the penetrating intensity of the melodic expression, the sumptuous variety of theinstrumentation, the fullness, the poetical sonority of the whole, the warm vivacity that shines everywhere and the passionate strength, although slow in disclosing (a characteristic feature of Verdi’s talent), give the entire work a mark of greatness, a sort of majestic sovereignty more underlined than in Verdi’s previous theatre productions.”
