Asteroid

Asteroids and comets have played an important role throughout the history of life on earth. It is quite probable that the dinosaurs have been exterminated by an asteroid's impact in the Gulf of Mexico. Huge tidal waves and fire storms wiped out all life. This is the year 2067 according to the Christian calendar. A collision has just taken place in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter and caused an asteroid to enter the earth's power of gravitation. It is instoppably approaching the blue planet. As its peoples have been fighting each other continuously, they missed the building of a global defence system against dangers coming from space. A scanner records the asteroid andimmediately sends a message to the President of the Anglo-American Union. The probability that the asteroid will hit the earth is judged 50% by the experts. Plans are made to shoot the celestial body with rockets live with hydrogen bombs or laser guns in order to throw it off its track, but they fail. The asteroid's size seems to threaten the existence of mankind. Those in the know stare at the night sky in bewilderment. But for the time being, there is still peace on earth....

Poul Ruders: Corpus Cum Figuris (Score)

Corpus Cum Figuris is a uniform composition in three major parts. The first part is a slow marche funébre, a kind of prologue with dark and sombre sounds and a massive wall of chords which leads us to the other part of the works where the static and solemn atmosphere is suddenly stopped and replaced by a rhythmic/melodic ritual which accelerates the music. In the third part the block structure is softened gradually, different figurations and stylistic elements arise to live their own lives: distant waltzes and pictures from the Middle Ages appear in this gigantic sonorous body. After a wild percussion orgy a short flash-back and a scream from the edge end Corpus cum Figuris. The piece has no literal content at all, even though the title leads the thought to Adrian Leverkühn?s Apocalipsis cum Figuris from Thomas Mann?s Doctor Faustus. More likely, my piece will arouse associations as with all my music. It has to be heard in it?s own conditions, in this case as a big body of music or perhaps as a great screen where the details, of course, are part of the whole body but at the same time are foreign and odd. It is as if one climbs a mountain and from the top of that mountain discovers a world which is completely different from expected. Corpus cum Figuris for 20 musicians was composed in 1984, commissioned by Ensemble InterContemporain and the Danish Radio. Ensemble InterContemporain world premiered the work in April 1985 conducted by Peter Eötvös. The piece was also played at the ISCM-festival in Amsterdam by Netherland Radio Chamber Orchestra conducted by Ernest Bour.

Brian Balmages: Flight of the Griffin

This exciting new work is based on the griffin, a mythological creature native to India, having the head, legs, and wings of an eagle, and the body of a lion. Starting with open 5ths in the clarinets, slight elements of Indian music are introduced as the work builds to its opening theme. A powerful middle section combines elements of chamber playing and full ensemble. The closing section represents the actual flight of the griffin, bringing the whole piece to a dramatic ending. Strongly consider this highly energetic composition!

Franz Schreker had a long and close association with choral music. As founder and director of Vienna's Philharmonic Chorus he led world premieres and first performances of works by contemporary composers. The Gibson Les Paul Standard 1958-1960 is one of the greatest designs to emerge from Gibson. At first, it was little appreciated and quickly discontinued. However, the UK blues explosion of the 1960s changed everything and these guitars would begin to shape the music for generations to come. The USA quickly picked up this new direction and players such as Mike Bloomfield and Duane Allman then used the Bursts to great effect. Demand for the guitar began in earnest in the 1970s and they now fetch astronomical prices. The Gibson Custom Shop is working diligently on many aspects of their historic Les Pauls bringing them as close to the originals as possible. Not only did the playersmake this the most collectable guitar in the vintage market but collectors and weekend players played a huge role in its cimb to the top. Visually, it is probably one of the most beautiful solid body guitars ever made.

Vidda : Solo for Trumpet and Brass Band

I composed the song "Vidda" after I got my ultimate boy's dream fulfilled; To fly one of the Air Force's F-16 fighter jets! We flew out from Norwegian city Bodø on to the Finnmark plateau, where we flew so-called "low level" (at low altitude). It was such a great experience for me that I immediately wrote the song "Vidda" based on my experience of the trip. Here, I try to describe the meeting between the technical perfection of a machine that surpasses most of the various forces in it’s escape through the magnificent scenery passing at great speed, and the pilot who is alone with both the adventure and responsibility. The drums which start the song is meant to describes theenergy in the power of the plane, while the lonely and kind of melancholy melody from the trumpet in the beginning describes the feelings of the pilot. As the song develop, we pass both the mountains and big beautiful plateaus with g-forces quivering body. Hopefully you will share some of my experiences through this song. Have a nice flight!
