The Viennese violinist Jakob Dont (1815-1888) was far better known as a teacher than as a performer. He was, indeed, one of the great teachers of the 19th century. One of his pupils was Leopold Auer, the renowned Russian violinist and teacher. In addition to his activities as a pedagogue, Dont found time to write a number of books of first-class studies, two of which - 24 Etudes And Caprices For The Violin and 24 Exercises Preparatory to Kreutzer are used today wherever the violin is seriously taught.

We know that Brahms took an active interest in Baroque music throughout his life. It can thus hardly be by chance that he chose a theme from one of Handel’s harpsichord suites for his 25 variations. The variations allow for iridescent colours and moods in the style of Beethoven’s characteristic variations. In keeping with the source, however, the work also features allusions to Baroque models embellishments, pedal points and ends in a grandly laid-out fugue with a triumphant build-up. Opus 24 unquestionably deserves its reputation as the composer’s most important variation cycle.

Caprice basque op. 24

Pablo de Sarasate (1844-1908) is one of the most important and successful violin virtuosos of the second half of the 19th century and has become immortal through his virtuoso and highly expressive bravura pieces in the world ofviolin playing. His concert programme mostly consisted of his own compositions, even if quite a few works had been dedicated to him by fellow composers and tailor-made for him: for example, 'Symphonie espagnole' by Lalo, 'ScottishFantasia' by Bruch and violin works by Saint-Saëns and Wieniawski. In 'Caprice Basque' (Capricho vasco) Op. 24, Sarasate used Spanish folk tunes. He dedicated this piece to the composer, conductor and pianist Otto Goldschmidt, apupil of Mendelssohn. This work is influenced by the typically dotted rhythm of the 'zortzico', a Basque dance in 5/8 meter - a virtuoso and rousing piece for virtuosos.
