This collection is to some extent shaped by the advent of the LP and the longer tracks it enabled and encouraged. That technological shift came in a period when Ellington would lose the three of his stellar sidemen: Johnny Hodges, Lawrence Brown and Sonny Greer. As it turned out, their replacements (Willie Smith, Britt Woodman and Louie Bellson) and other new blood only served to re-energise the band as it approached the 25th anniversary of its initial engagement at The Cotton Club. The box set includes a high-quality 27-page booklet including a large selection of never before seen photos of The Duke and his band members in their prime time. Spanning the years in which Ellington regularly toured Europe and Scandinavia, The Duke Box 2 offers a rich selection of performances illustrating a tirelessly inventive musical spirit on tour with changing personnel and occasional guest artists. CD3 features never before released live recordings from a 1963 concert in Gröna Lund, Stockholm—a veritable treasure for the committed Ellington fan. The box also includes the well-renowned Jaywalker (CD5) and Piano Player (CD4) albums whose music always deserves a re-visiting. Among other gems are late 1970s recordings from New York, some of the last music Ellington ever put out. The bonus DVD combines a series of short films of the Ellington band in action and despite the sound being recorded first and the performances showing the band miming, this curiosum offers a fascinating glimpse of The Duke in action, and the audio is of course technically excellent. The achievement of Duke Ellington exists on a variety of levels. The closer you examine it, the more complex and multi-faceted it appears to be. The first great composer of jazz, the most popular African-American bandleader, the influential pianist, who made light of his piano contribution, the magician who assisted the musical formation of several key individual contributors but who nevertheless retained the identity of his band over a 50-year period. MCM was a labour of love by a young French woman, Marcelle Chailleux, and her future husband Jacques Morgantini.   In the 1950's Jacques had brought the likes of Big Bill Broonzy, Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker to Europe to appear at his French hometown event - a dedicated Chicago blues festival - but it was recent blues convert Marcelle who travelled to Chicago in the mid-1970s to record a unique collection of live performances.   Some of the performances presented here were by men who would become giants of the blues; others were by talented artists who never found wider fame and whose MCM recordings remain the only surviving evidence of their talent. This is the second CD in Storyville's series of Danish tenor saxophonist Jesper Thilo's small group sessions in Copenhagen in the 1980's. The CD contains five different combos, each with one or more of the following major American guest artists: pianists Kenny Drew and Roland Hanna, trumpeters Clark Terry and Harry "Sweets" Edison,trombonist Al Grey and drummer Billy Hart. The CD contains 14 tunes (74 minutes) and consists of four studio sessions in Copenhagenand one live session from Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. Accompanying Thilo are the best musicians on the Danish jazz scene, including bassists Mads Vinding and Jesper Lundgaard and drummers Alex Riel and Svend-Erik Nørregaard. Jesper Thilo is the most popular jazz musician in Denmark today and one of the best tenor sax players in Europe and this CD is packed with his hard-swinging, positive jazz energy from end to end. All 45 tunes on this two-hour double CD consist solely of the boogie woogie piano playing of Pete Johnson, Meade Lux Lewis and Albert Ammons ? there is no bass, drums or horns. Seven of the tunes are previously unreleased. The music on Volume 1 is taken from radio transcriptions recorded in 1944, 1947 & 1954-54. Volume 2 is entirely from radio transcriptions from the Sherman Hotel in Chicago in 1939. Most of the tunes are solo piano, ten tunes are duets with Ammons and Johnson, one is a duet with Ammons and Lewis, and two tunes are with all three pianists. This is Vol. 3 of a long series of releases of the complete Treasury Broadcasts from the mid forties. Contracted by the U.S. Treasury Dept. in 1945, Duke Ellington And His Orchestra performed a series of public service radio broadcasts to arouse patriotism and sell war bonds to help the U.S. military defeat the Japanese to end World War 2. Besides performing music which was already well known his own as well as others' Ellington uses the programs presented here to test, check and refine new material, such as the tunes "Blutopia" and "Carnegie Blues." It's very lucky that these precious, well recorded radio broadcasts have survived. They represent an important, yet elusive, period in the evolution of jazz namely, the mid 40's. This 2 CD set features several star performers Johnny Hodges, Rex Stewart, AI Sears, Joya Sherrill and AI Hibbler, among others and especially trombonist Lawrence Brown.

Carsten Dahl is a multi-faceted pianist - and quite likely the best and most creative pianist in Europe. In 2000 he recorded The Butterfly Dream, his first solo CD for Storyville. There were 14 tracks on the CD, named "1", "2", "3", etc., except for the 13th tune that was named "The Butterfly Dream". A decade later he is repeating the concept with this new CD - this time 15 numbers that he calls "EFFATA 1", "EFFATA 2", etc., except for track 15, which is titled "GLORIE" and is dedicated to his wife, the saxophonist Christina Dahl. The Aramaic word EFFATA means "be opened" and is one that informs the artist.Listening to the CD, one thinks of Keith Jarrett and Cecil Taylor and their style of free improvisation, or Mary Lou Williams, who had the same ideas with her album Zodiac Suite. John Tchicai was excited when we presented our plans to release a double CD with material from his 2 Storyville LPs with three different sessions recorded in Denmark. One was recorded at Club Montmartre March 15, 1977 and another session in a studio in Copenhagen March 29, 1977 and the third session also in Copenhagen November 10 ? 14, 1987. John Tchicai took part in the project from the very beginning and also chose the liner note writer Andrey Henkin.John Tchicai began his career playing alto saxophone and ended it playing tenor saxophone. In April 1945, to promote the sale of war bonds, the Treasury Department contracted Duke Ellington to do a series of 55 minute public broadcasts. This two CD set from Storyville Records contains broadcasts no. 34 and 35 from the series, complete with radio speaks and encouragements to buy bonds, as well as bonus material and extensive liner notes. CD 1 contains two radio broadcasts from San Antonio, Texas, April 13, 1946 and from Howard Theatre in Washington April 20, 1946 plus bonus tracks from Hurricane Restaurant in NYC, April 28, 1946. CD 2 features three radio programs from Worcester, April 27 1946 and from the Hurricane.

Dorothy Donegan: Strength-Energy-Imagination

Dorothy Donegan was an acclaimed pianist working in nightclubs and cocktail lounges in Chicago. She also appeared in the film ?Sensations of 1945? where she played a duet with pianist Gene Rodgers, with assistance from Cab Calloway and his orchestra. She was known as a virtuosic pianist fluent in several jazz styles. Art Tatum (who along with Earl Hines was the biggest influence on Donegan?s style) heard about her and had her play for him. They become a good friends and Tatum even taught her some ideas. On this 2 CD set there are recordings from London House in Chicago 1961, Antibes, France in 1975 and Jazzhouse Slukefter in Copenhagen 1980.
