Thomas Fonnesbæk Trio: Sharing

Thomas Fonnesbæk Trio: Sharing

Release November 09, 2018.   Thomas Fonnesbæk and Justin Kauflin are ready to follow up on the critically acclaimed album Synethesia from 2017. This time they are joined by Billy Williams on drums, making this a trio record.   The album, entitled Sharing, was recorded during November 2017 in Gothenburg, Sweden. It consists of 10 tracks, with the main part composed by Fonnesbæk, alongside one improvisation and a rendition of the classic track Inception, written by McCoy Tyner. On Sharing the trio exemplifies the fact that jazz has never been a more international art form than it is today, and that new generations continue to set their own fascinating imprint on the music.   Opening track Point Of No Return starts with a ride-cymbal that sets a kind of upbeat but still very spacious sound, and within the first minute the piano and bass kicks in giving the intro a form that slowly transcends into the theme of the song. First Dance is as the title suggest, a percussion-heavy song that invites the listener to dance to the rhythms. Title-track Sharing is a beautiful ballad that really displays the immense talents of the trio, with the piano in a leading role and almost playful in the way it explores the melody and chords within the song. Tokyo Tower is one of the more upbeat songs, shapeshifting between a kind of metric funk and more traditional jazz within the blink of an eye. The album closes on a high beat, with the trio’s rendition of Inception. Presented here in a very high tempo, the trio once again displays what they are capable of, this time playing fast and precise, without ever sounding forced.   Danish bassist Thomas Fonnesbæk is a fascinating musician who exudes technical brilliance and a superior sense of rhythm, as well as a melodic and harmonic sensitivity reminiscent of Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen that never overshadows his own unique style.   Justin Kauflin is one of the great piano talents of recent times. Renowned trumpetist Clark Terry and Quincy Jones has both taken the young prodigy under their wings, playing a crucial part in his success. The maturity he displays and focus with which he plays is exceptional.   Billy Williams is the childhood friend of Kauflin and has worked professionally with a long list of great jazz musicians such as Christian McBride, Larry Willis, Steve Wilson, Benny Golson and Ellis Marsalis Kauflin and Fonnesbæk met for the first time when they were put together for a show at Montmartre in Copenhagen.   Kauflin was so impressed with Fonnesbæk, that he invited him to go on tour with him in Europe and Asia. Both Justin Kauflin and Thomas Fonnesbæk perceive music as colour, a form of synesthesia where one sense stimulates another. It is an aptitude that permeates this record and boosts the level of interplay to new heights. As a result, almost everything is possible and the music becomes boundless when Kauflin, Fonnesbæk and Billy Williams let themselves go. In all of this, Williams plays a major role. His style, at once powerful and sensitive, binds the music together while giving it the groove to constantly propel the group forward.   Great art gets us to forget daily life for a moment. It makes us aware of our fe

Thomas Clausen/Severi Pyysalo: Turn Out The Stars

Thomas Fonnesbæk & Justin Kauflin: Synesthesia

Thomas Fonnesbæk & Justin Kauflin: Synesthesia

A new project from jazz bassist and household name on the Danish jazz stage, Thomas Fonnesbæk , with American composer and Pianist prodigy, Justin Kauflin .    Fonnesbæk himself recalls the beginning of the new project like this: “ My first meeting with Justin Kauflin was in Copenhagen in the spring of 2015 at Jazzhouse Montmartre, together with his childhood friend and drummer, Billy Williams. When Montmartre's former music director Christian Brorsen introduced me to them, I immediately recognized how talented they were and that Justin's pianistic virtuosity and musicality would be a most treasured musical experience.    Besides being a meeting between Justin and myself, it was a meeting of cultures with many similarities and many inspiring differences that we could express through sound in the universal language of music. We quickly discovered we also shared a neurological commonality in that we both have synesthesia, which in our case means seeing sounds as colors with our mind's eye. Synesthesia has also ended up being the title of this album. ”    The young jazz superstar Justin Kauflin is a Pianist, composer and producer. His international recognition proves its worth on this album: He is a precise and playful Pianist, but always laid-back and elegant. His style mingles perfectly with the quieter Scandinavian Fonnesbæk and together, their understated approach makes a powerful statement in itself. It’s Kauflin’s simplicity and skill that impresses the listener, his eloquence on the Piano never throwing the audience off, but always inviting them to sharpen their senses to the smallest of details.    This is Fonnesbæk’s third duo album, recorded over the course of two days in beautiful surroundings in Sweden. Some of the original compositions were prepared in advance and some were improvised on the spot. It’s a rather untraditional jazz album in the sense that the bass takes the lead with only a Piano as support. Nevertheless, the collaboration between just two instruments doesn’t lack any support, and rather Fonnesbæk & Kauflin create an ambience for thoughtfulness and sensitivity in a aerial soundscape that lets you appreciate every small detail.

Signe Juhl & Nikolaj Bentzon Trio: A Midsummer Night's Jazz

In the warm midsummer of 2015, a tour around Denmark brought Signe Juhl and the Nikolaj Bentzon Trio to Jazzhus Montmartre in the heart of Copenhagen. The music and the atmosphere from the two nights they played has now been made to last forever with the record, A Midsummer Night’s Jazz , which is released in April 2016 on Denmark’s great jazz label, Storyville Records. There’s something unique about listening to live music: And jazz – that living, playful and impulsive music – should be experienced at close range. A Midsummer Night’s Jazz captures this special and intense live feel. With the Nikolaj Bentzon Trio the energy is guaranteed to reach new heights. Espen Laub von Lillienskjold (Drums) delivers both nerve and elegance to the quick swing classics and soulful ballads. Nikolaj Bentzon (Piano) has a unique ability to bring new life to well-known standards with groovy and swinging riffs among other creative impulses. The interplay between him and his musical partner Signe Juhl (Vocals) is unrivalled. In the last few years, their close companionship has resulted in several releases – for example Juhl ’s debut Silver Tongued and the large-scale symphony Bluray-release Luxury Jazz. 31-year old Signe Juhl is an extraordinarily noteworthy contributor to the Danish musical stage. She is a full-grown vocalist with an extraordinary depth and vocal span for our Northern latitudes. Her excess in melodic skill often brings her to new and interesting places in songs, you used to think you already knew. She possesses, in other words, a true jazz instinct. It’s swinging! Personnel: Signe Juhl (Vocals) Nikolaj Bentzon (Piano) Reuben Rogers (Acoustic Bass) Espen Laub von Lillienskjold (Drums)
