With this new 2003 recording (12 tunes/56 min.), Ole "Fessor" Lindgreen is disbanding his Big City Band after a 35-year European success story. Never content with the limitations of traditional jazz, Fessor once again makes wonderful music on this CD in his explorations of musical styles including old blues, bebop, Caribbean, Afro-Cuban and modern New Orleans rhythm & blues. Basically a "modern" traditional jazz band, the music on this CD includes a classic modern jazz composition by Charles Mingus, a basic Leadbelly blues, a sweet love song by Ivory Joe Hunter, some modern New Orleans r & b tunes and six Fessor originals.The band is made up of top Danish professionals, including both new and old Big City Band members, plus three guest artists. Violinist Kristian Jørgensen, clarinetist "Nulle " Nykjær and organist Kjeld Lauritsen are the guest soloists on the CD, making the exciting Big City Band's music even more of a pleasure to hear. The tunes average 5-6 minutes in length, giving the soloists plenty of time to really get in the groove. Grover Mitchell Big Band

This first-time CD release is comprises two LPs recorded between 1978 and 1980. Grover Mitchell was first trombonist in the Count Basie Orchestra from 1962-70 and 1980-84, and he has led the Basie Orchestra since 1995. The musical style on the CD is Basie-style swing big band music with a strong blues influence. Grover Mitchell wrote all but four of the 17 numbers on the CD, and arranged all the tunes. Along with the brilliant writing and arranging by Grover Mitchell, Mitchell's big band includes major Basie musicians (trumpeter Al Aarons and trombonist Henry Coker) plus trombonist Britt Woodman from Duke Ellington's orchestra. Also featured are major West Coast musicians Buddy Collette (flute, alto and tenor) and Red Callender (bass). Grover Mitchell's big band is not unsurprisingly reminiscent of the Count Basie Orchestra, with the same tight-but-loose swinging style, a tasty blues influence and top musicianship.

The Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Big Band visited Scandinavia a couple of times and was a sensation. Later when Mel Lewis and Thad Jones had some difficulties Thad got an offer from the Danish Radio Big Band where his first season was (1977-78). Thad Jones wanted to play his own music and played as many as ten radio broadcasts per year at the Montmartre Club. At the same time he also started up his own big band, Eclipse, with his own repertoire, based at Jazzhus Slukefter in the Tivoli Garden. On this double CD you can hear both orchestras. Danish Radio Big Band: A Good Time Was Had By All

This 72-minute (ten tunes) session was recorded live at the Montmartre jazz club in Copenhagen in 1978. Five of the ten tunes are written by Thad Jones; the rest include compositions by Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington and the Gershwin Brothers. The Danish Radio Big Band is comprised of the best Danish musicians plus two American stars - Idrees Sulieman on trumpet and Richard Boone on trombone - who were living in Copenhagen at the time. Thad Jones' compositions are a mix of power and eloquence; a unique style which made him world famous. The two years during which Thad Jones was chief conductor of the Danish Radio Big Band (1977,78) are considered the best in the Radio Big Band's illustrious forty-year history. World-renowned bassist on this gig, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen has this to day about playing with Thad Jones: "? this is the culmination of thirteen years ? working in this band. This is what this band is capable of sounding like!" And the drummer, Bjarne Rostvold had this to say: "? he was able to inspire us with his energy, his ability to improvise through body movements. His performance as a conductor was always something special. He made the band play better than ever."

The band is comprised of the "creme" of Danish jazz musicians, plus the world-famous American trumpeter Tim Hagans ? who, at this time, was a young musician on his way up.Creme Fraiche was one of the most exciting modern "electric" jazz and funk big band in Europe in the seventies. Thad Jones ? one of the best and most successful big band leaders in the U.S. since the mid-sixties ? moved to Denmark in the late 1970?s and put together his own new 19-man big band, Eclipse, drawing on the absolute best talent among the top Danish musicians, plus several famous American musicians living in Denmark at the time.The American musicians in the band are pianist Horace Parlan, alto and baritone saxophonist Sahib Shihab, drummer Ed Thigpen, trombonist Richard Boone, conga player Emmanuel Rahim and trumpeter Tim Hagans. Six of the twelve tunes (72 min. playing time) are recorded in the studio in 1979; six are recorded live in the Slukefter Club in Tivoli Gardens. This is the first time this music is being released on CD. Of the twelve numbers on the CD, Thad Jones wrote four of them and arranged eight. The musical style is be-bop and "modern" big band. Besides his beautiful tunes and arrangements, Thad Jones? intense enthusiasm, positive attitude and dynamic leadership brought out the absolute best in his carefully-chosen musicians, and they loved playing for him.Thad Jones was very happy with his "Danish" big band, too. Marc Bernstein: Dear Tom Harrell

This CD is conceived as a tribute to the great modern trumpet and flugelhorn player, Tom Harrell. Seven of the eight tunes are written by band members (including two by Harrell) especially for the occasion. Marc Bernstein plays soprano, alto and tenor sax with equal authority and ingenuity. Of the original music written by the band members especially for this session, Harrell says, ?I feel very at home with these songs because they relate to emotions and feelings that are very close to me.? The result is some very intense, moving and beautiful music, clearly enhanced by a great young Danish rhythm section (on 6 of the 8 tunes). The last two numbers on the CD are recorded in New York without Harrell and with another fine rhythm group. The excellent trumpet player here is Chris Rogers, whom Tom Harrell recommended as his replacement in the Gerry Mulligan Big Band, and who also played in Harrell?s own big band. This CD is not only a fine tribute to the legendary Tom Harrell, but also a fitting portrait of a great young saxophonist.
