Patrick Hawes: Out Of The Depths (For Soprano, SATB Chorus, Harp And Strings)

From the album 'Angel', this piece is an extract of a larger work 'The Angel of Mons' and is adapted from the words of Psalm 130. The Angel of Mons is a large-scale choral work describing the apparition of an angel to British soldiers in the first battle of the First World War. Out of the Depths first conveys the prayers of the wives, fiancées and mothers left at home: the angel responds with words of reassurance. Next, the soldiers themselves sing of their longing for divine assistance. The angel appears once more as the prayers of the men and women alike combine in a final climax. The piece subsides into quiet prayer asking the Lord for mercy.

As a centrepiece of the Chorus festival, Southbank Centre invited artist Martin Creed to create a version of his Work No. 409 specially for the JCB glass lift in Royal Festival Hall, in which visitors? journeys are accompanied by the recorded voices of Voicelab singers, rising as the lift rises and descending as it falls.

Joseph Horovitz: Concertino Classico (2 Trumpets/Piano)

This work was composed in 1985, the tercentenary of Bach, Handel and Scarlatti, whose influence could not be avoided and is hereby gratefully acknowledged. Originally scored for two solo cornets and brass band, Horovitz?s Concertino Classico is available here for two Trumpets (or Cornets) with Piano Accomapaniment.
