Jack Hawes: Magnificat And Nunc Dimittis In D (SATB)

Jack Hawes (1916-2004) was a British composer, cellist, and pianist. He wrote widely for choir, orchestra, strings, and solo instruments, and cited his influences as Walton, Ireland, Bliss, Delius, and Debussy. His first setting of the evening canticles, the Magnificat And Nunc Dimittis in D , was completed in 1955 and dedicated to the church of St Mary-Le-Tower, Ipswich, where he sang as a boy chorister and first began to study the organ. It is scored for SATB with Organ accompaniment, and is firmly in the 20th century Anglican style, with plenty of soaring melodic lines and big climatic moments.

Richard Blackford: Reconciliation

For SATB choir with Piano accompaniment."In 2000, the poet Tony Harrison, to cheer me up during a troubled period of my life, sent me a copy of Goethe?s poem. I began to sketch music for it then, and finished it in 2003. It is set for mixed chorus and strings. A winding, forlorn cello figure, like a lost soul, leads to a softer, tender violin theme that evokes the healing power of music to the troubled spirit. The hushed chorus enters a cappella, and the forlorn cello figure is developed as they describe the illusory nature of the ?splendid? world. The ?healing? theme returns, now elaborated by the sopranos, and the whole chorus joins them, building a sustained message of hope and thanks for the regenerative power of music and love.This short piece is fondly dedicated to my friends Jane and David Fanshawe. It was commissioned by the Bournemouth Symphony Chorus and first performed by them in Poole on 17 April 2004."                                - Richard Blackford

Taken from Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil's classic West End and Broadway musical Miss Saigon, Last Night of the World captures the fateful, emotional embrace of Kim, a Vietnamese bar girl, and Chris, an American GI, that changes their lives forever.Arranged by Francis Shaw for SATB chorus with Piano accompaniment, this choral re-imagining of Boublil and Schönberg's touching yet ultimately tragic song is an excellent piece for choirs looking for a work of passion, power and poignancy to add to their repertoire.

John McCabe: Two Scenes From Edward II

Two pieces from the score of the full-length ballet Edward II. The ballet iteslf was commissioned by the Stuttgart Ballet, and completed in 1995. The first performance took place in Stuttgart in April 1995, and in the same year this arrangement for 2 Pianos of two scenes was commissioned by the Port Fairy Festival of Australia.The first pieces represents one of the lighter moments of the ballet, and is based upon a set of dances at the French Court> The second piece is a reminder of the darker nature of the ballet as a whole, expressing the lust for power as the Barons opposed to Edward II unite in anger at his behaviour.

Malcolm Arnold: Electra (Study Score)

Malcolm Arnold 's ballet in one act Electra is presented here as a full study score. Based on a reduced version of Sophocles' play, Arnold 's ballet was commissioned by the Royal Ballet, and first performed at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden on the 26th of March 1963. Electra  lasts around 15 minutes, and was given its first concert performance by the BBC Concert Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall in London, conducted by Barry Wordsworth on the 5th of November 2004. For this full score, Arnold adopted the normal anglicised spelling of Electra,  however the first performance had it billed in the original spelling of Elektra, as in the more famous opera by Richard Strauss.  The ballet is exciting, dynamic and dark, making for a wonderful performance that's as compelling as it is enjoyable. The power of the music married with the intense percussion in Electra  are fitting for such a classically tragic tale.

Sweeney Todd The Barber (Vocal Score)

The time is the early 1840?s. The place is the shop of Sweeney Todd the barber, where many more customers go in than ever come out! This is a fun piece for schools and contains some amusing lyrics set to catchy tunes. It may be performed quite simply as written, or the score here may be used as the basis for something more elaborate involving scenery, costumes and props. or it can be done in any way in between. Written for narrator, unison voices and piano, the seven songs may be sung by all the voices or solo voices can sing the character parts in contrast to the choruses. If instruments are used to accompany the voices then choose banjo/ukelele rather than guitar, cornet rather than trumpet, an so on. In other words, aim for a music hall orchestra sound. There is ample opportunity to make the most of the conventions of Victorian melodrama such as hissing at the villain and overdone, nasty laughter in You?re In My Power!

A song cycle for Tenor, Baritone and Piano four-hands.Commissioned by Dickinson College in 2008 for The Florestan Recital Project, Musical Artists in ResidenceFirst performance March 4, 2010 Dickinson College, PAThis work is dedicated to Don and Marilyn Conlan""The seventeen poems selected for this work span many centuries and languages and give very varied views on the subject of love.There is a mixture of solos and duets which also gives variety. Also there is a difference in the characterization of the two singers; the tenor is more romantic, and  the baritone more realistic and cynical. In the penultimate poem by Tyutchev, this  split is emphasized in the words ? ??, ????????? ??????! / T? ? ?????????? ?  ?????????????. (O love of my last years you are both rapture and desperation).  However both singers recognize the power of love.The work should be sung  without a break between the songs, and indeed several of the poems overlap. To  emphasize the continuity there are several recurring musical motives: in particular  the theme associated with the words from the Shakespeare poem in Twelfth Night  ?What is love??Hopefully the songs can be sung in the original languages (except for the poem from the Haida) however ?singable? translations have been provided.I  want to thank the many friends and colleagues who offered much appreciated advice on fully understanding the poems and thus their translations: Henry Garrity,  Lilian Groag, Gustavo Lopez Manzitti, Veronica Mitina, Alma Mora, Milen Nachev,  Rick Prins, Vic and Laura Sonnino and especially to Frank Dwyer, who suggested  the title of the work." - Thea MusgraveDuration: circa 30 minutes
