John Joubert (b. 1927) is a British composer. Born in Cape Town, he studied at the Royal Academy of Music and has lived and worked in the UK ever since. His compositions span a wide range of genres, from large scale symphonic and operatic works to chamber music and choral miniatures. All Wisdom Cometh From The Lord (Op. 62) was composed in 1969, having been commissioned by Michele Clement for the choir of Queenswood School in Hatfield. It is scored for SA two-part Female Voice Choir with Organ accompaniment. It takes its text from extracts from the first chapter of Ecclesiastes.

Postcards was written in 1991 for the Vega Wind Quintet, who first performed it at the Huddersfield Festival in the same year. It is a reworking of a set of eight Bagatelles written in 1965: each movement has been rewritten and enlarged to a greater or lesser extent. The title was chosen to emphasise the nature of the pieces, which are in a sense brief postcards from different genres (fugato, dance, etc). John Joubert: Sonata No.2 Op. 71 For Piano

The second sonata is on a much larger scale than the first, and has three movements which develop in intensity, reaching a climax in the last movement which is a passacaglia. It is a stormy work, in the sense that it opens peacefully and closes in a similar manner, with a heavy shower of notes and ideas in between.There is little hint of this in the gentle opening of the first movement, and although it follows the pattern of its previous sonata in developing a climax and releasing it again, it is not until the scherzo, with its powerful motor rhythms, that the full fury of the storm breaks. The concluding passacaglia is built on repetition. The nature of the form party makes this inevitable, but repetition becomes a subtext, with the idea of speeding up to a climax being itself repeated, the second time subsiding into the peace of a storm blown out.© John Joubert

Patrick Hawes: Eventide (Reduced Version)

The Full Score of Eventide , the epic composition inspired by the story of Edith Cavell, compiled from texts relating to her imprisonment, composed by the great Patrick Hawes . This is the reduced version, scored for Soprano, SATB Chorus, Unison Semi-Chorus, Trumpet, Harp, Organ and Strings. This work is dedicated to Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society and Gresham's, Holt, who first performed this work in Norwich Cathedral on the 12th of July 2014 to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.  Lasting around 45 minutes, this large-scale work has the subtitle 'In Memoriam Edith Cavell', who is commemorated here as a nurse to German and British wounded who went on to provide refuge to escaped and lost British soldiers, who were enabled by her to return to England. As a result of this, she was arrested for 'treason' and condemned to death. While in prison, her only possessions were her Bible, her Book of Common Prayer and a copy of the Imitation of Christ. The libretto, as compiled by Andrew Hawes, is made up of extracts from these books, as well as other materials relating to her final days.  This tribute to a brave and courageous life is fitting for a composition commemorating the First World War. The tragedy and pathos surrounding Cavell's life is hard for us to understand, but by placing words so personal to her in the context of a piece of beautiful music, it forces us to think and remember, while also condemning the actions of so many figures of authority on an innocent and pious nurse during that horrific period.
