Sollicitus for Brass band and Percussion

The latin title «Sollicitus» means upset or uneasy is important in terms of the character and form of the work. This work contains several different pcarts, all of them based around a fanfare-like theme which is presented several times. This theme change it’s character, form, tonality, rhytmic and tension throughout the piece which triggers the turbulence of the music. «Sollicitus» is a commission for Midtun Skoles Musikkorps and their conductor Christian Breistein for their participation in the Norwegian Championships for School Bands in 2017. The version for Brass Band was written to Laksevåg Musikkforening for their participation at the Norwegian Brass Band Championships 2018.

Blue Sky Swing

Blue Sky Swing is an easy and catchy swing tune which has to be be played with swing feel (swing 8th´s). The tune has a characteristic rhythm and articulation, which you also find in some traditional swing-tunes for big bands. All parts are written so that also the youngest and least-experienced musicians can play this piece well. Norwegian Sunset, composed by Danish composer Bent Fabricius-Bjerre, is a famous song in Norway. In the movie Pinchcliffe Grand Prix, it’s performed under a starry night by the main character Reodor Felgeny. The arrangement is based on Sigmund Groven’s version, and invites the band to feature a soloist on trumpet or cornet. Wide use of cued notes will help the band to achive good balance also for bands with limited instrumentation. This piece was written after a vacation to Dubai in 2011. A Joyous Day is a positive melody which express expectations, hope and joy. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child celebrated 30 years in 2019 and the Norwegian Directorate for Children, Youth and Family affairs commissioned Children's March for the celebration on November 20th in Oslo. School bands is a good example of the rights children have to play, learning and leisure regardless of background. The FNS Children's Convention was adopted by the UN General Assembly on 20 November 1989. The Convention is in the world community the most recognized of all UN conventions. Norway ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1991 and in 2003 the parliament made the Convention into Norwegian law. The march is easy to play, catchy and willfit well as a concert or street march in both large and small bands. In accordance with the Convention on the Rights of the Child, available voices for stringed instruments have also been made so that other young people can play along. Let more children join in and hum on the tune in the trio part of the march.

Waltz for Debby

“Waltz for Debby” was written by American jazz pianist and composer Bill Evans (1929-1980). It was heard for the first time on his 1956 debut record “New Jazz Conceptions”. This recording made the tune his most famous one, included on several later recordings both for solo piano and his usual trio format. It also became a favorite on almost all his concerts. The tune is a kind of a musical portrait of Evans’ niece, Debby Evans. In Scandinavia, Swedish singer Monica Zetterlund made it popular for a wider audience through her 1964-recording accompanied by Evans and his trio. On this recording, the song was renamed “Monicas vals”.

Klovnen - Solo for Bb Cornet : The Clown - Solo for Bb Cornet

“The Clown” is a three-movement suite for Bb Cornet Solo with Concert Band. The three short movements challenges both the soloist and band technically as well as musically. It was written in 1968 as the composers exam in instrumentation.

«Seid» (pronounced sayed was a divination ceremony practised by the Vikings which could be used to reveal knowledge of the future. During the ceremony, woman sang incantations and the Seeress (Völva) passed into a kind of trance. In other arctic cultures similar ceremonies took place during which the Medicine man (Sage), or Shaman, would beat a drum covered with magic runes, and he too would pass into a trance, reaching the deepest part of his own sub-consciousness - a journey beyond time and space... “Seid” was commissioned by The Norwegian Band Federation and European Brass Band Assosiation for the European Brass Band Championship in 1996. The version for Concert Bandwas commissioned by Frode Amundsen and Borge Musikkorps in 2018. Supported by NOPA (Norwegian Society of Composers and Lyricists)

After that, several other Norwegian artists have made their own versions both on stage and record. This arrangement in 12/8 time signature tries to capture the sound and rhythmic drive of the original song. Watch the dynamics and balance between the different elements. The guitar and bass parts are optional.
