The Best of Mauro Giuliani : 20 morceaux pour guitare

The Best of Mauro Giuliani : 20 morceaux pour guitare

Mauro Giuliani is considered today to have been the most important guitarist-composer of the early nineteenth century. Not only was Giuliani the foremost player of his day: his fame reached far beyond the realm of guitar enthusiasts, earning him aplace among the musical élite as a complete, versatile musician. Even so, by the end of the nineteenth century he was largely forgotten and his music managed to retain little more than a marginal presence in the repertory of the great guitarists ofthe early twentieth century. The current revitalization of his work owes its origins to the monumental research begun by Thomas Heck in 1971 and continued by Ruggero Chiesa,Mario Torta, Marco Riboni, and Gerhard Pen. Thanks to the dedication of thesescholars, Giuliani’s music has progressively returned to its erstwhile prominence in the performing repertory.Giuliani wrote some 230 works, of which 150 carry opus numbers. They consist above all of pieces for solo guitar and a considerablequantity of chamber music for guitar and violin, flute, piano, or voice, as well as three guitar concertos. Based on the texts of the first published editions, the pieces in this collection have been revised only with the addition of fingering(according to the technique documented in Giuliani’s method (Studio per la chitarra opus 1) and his Esercizio per la chitarra contenente 24 pezzi della maggiore difficoltà, diversi preludi passaggi ed assolo opus 48, published by Steiner in 1813) andthe correction of obvious typographical errors.

The Best of Niccolò Paganini : 38 morceaux pour guitare - 38 pieces for guitar

The Best of Niccolò Paganini : 38 morceaux pour guitare - 38 pieces for guitar

The legendary Genovese violinist Niccolò Paganini (Genoa, 27 October 1782 – Nice, 27 May 1840) was probably the only great composer of the past to show a constant interest in the guitar and, although he never played the instrument in public concerts,a number of testimonies to his ability as a guitarist have come down to us. For the Genovese maestro the guitar constituted the harmonic and accompanying instrument par excellence, so much so that in his music it occupied the role normally entrustedby composers of his era to the piano. Paganini wrote 140 compositions for solo guitar and almost all his works for strings (mainly for violin: sonatas, duets, trios, quartets and even someconcertos for violin and orchestra) were conceived withaccompaniment by guitar. The selection of pieces is based on the idea of extracting from this disparate mass the works that best represent the spirit and originality of Paganini.Today, to render this music accessible to any interpreter, it is necessary to supplement it with a polyphonic realisation of the parts: this edition adheres to the style of the Viennese publishers in the era of Mauro Giuliani, or, in other words, itwrites the high and low voices separately, grouping all the harmonic fillings on these two principal voices. With this type of notation, moreover, it is necessary to apply all the performance practices in use between the end of the 18th century andthe beginning of the 19th century.
