Love Drunk : Folk Songs Set No. 16b for Violin and Piano

Love Drunk (Folk Songs, Set No. 16B) was commissioned by Thomas Jones and completed in July 2014. This is the sixteenth set of an ongoing cycle of Persian folk songs that Reza Vali has been composing since 1978. The work's four songs (songs without words) reflect upon different aspects of love. In song No. 1, Longing, the lover is longing for a reunion with the beloved. Song No. 2, In Memory of a Lost Beloved, is a dialogue, across the dimensions, between the deceased beloved and the grieving lover. The song reflects upon the grief of separation--in this case, separation by death. The sensual and the spiritual aspects of love intersect in song No. 3, The Girl from Shiraz. The melodies of the third song are accompanied by quotes from the Christmas carol Silent Night, Wagner's Tristan and Isolde, and Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time. The final song No. 4, Love Drunk, describes the intoxicating joy when the lovers meet.

Widows (Viudas), Full Score

Libretto and Music by Juan Orrego-Salas. An opera in a prologue and three acts, based on the novel Widows by Ariel Dorfman. The story is set in a Latin American country controlled by a military dictatorship where most of the men from a village have disappeared.

Trio Sonata No. 1 for Two Flutes & Basso Continuo : (Realized for Piano)

Giuseppe Brescianello's (1650-1758) Trio Sonatas for two flutes and continuo, here published for the first time, are dedicated to Monseigneur le Prince Hereditaire de Württemberg. The manuscript is located at the Stadtbibliothek in Rostock, Germany. This first Trio Sonata in C Major is in three movements: a typical Allegro, Largo, Allegro set. The present edition is faithful to the original manuscript, where very few dynamics and articulations are marked. Continuo realization by Piero Caraba.

Commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic for Gustavo Dudamel, Hartke's fourth symphony is a strikingly-powerful and emotionally-charged work. The solo organ part was written for and actually sketched out on the one-of-a-kind grand concert organ at Walt Disney Hall. Annees de pelerinage: Italie (Years of Pilgrimage: Italy) derives its title from the set of three suites for piano by Franz Liszt in which he musically portrays the strongest sensations and most lively impressions created by his travels to Italy and Switzerland during the period 1835-39. In this composition, each of the four movements explores a particular Italian city or region through, in part, the eyes of other composers who (like Liszt) were inspired to write works based on their own sojourns in the country. There are references, both literal and oblique, to music by Berlioz, Tchaikovsky and Liszt (with a sly wink from Paganini). Serious and playful elements combine in thepiece, with the two inner movements (II. Venezia e Napoli and III. Firenze) providing light-hearted foils to the more somber outer movements (I. Roma and IV. Abruzzo). Lot's Wives : SATB and Cello (Full Score and Cello Part)

Written for the Chapel Choir of University College, Oxford, Giles Underwood, Director of Music. This setting of Pireeni Sundaralingam's poem LOT'S WIVES (about the Sri Lankan Civil War that took place between 1983-2009) was written in June of 2023, during the war between Russia and Ukraine and four months before the escalation between Israel and Palestine. Bruce Adolphe describes the work: As a composer, I was drawn to the way the poem looks back in time as the women look back on destruction, creating a temporal counterpoint of past and present. To set these words, I combined the sorrowful lyricism of looking back to the past with the fierce dissonance of present violence. The cello plays several roles: it triggers memory; it comments on the text and on the music that is sung; it provides accompaniment.
