Love from Two Pickthall Songs

In this first piece of a set called "Two Pickthall Songs," the poet asks the wind to be still, life to be sufficient, and time to be merciful. Each line of the poem is set to its own unique musical phrase, which directly relates to each image of the text. The music picks up emotion and energy on the word “breath,” as if the chorus is sighing. Later, the music increases its harmonic tension on the word “relentless.” The closing phrase is sung on a hum, as if to represent a memory, an echo, or perhaps a shadow in the window which reminds us of something that has passed. Stephen Chatman: Sunset (From 'Due West') (SSAA)

Stephen Chatman's Sunset for SSAA chorus is an arrangement from his original set, Due West for SATB chorus, commissioned by the Vancouver Chamber Choir in 1997. The charming text by Tara Wohlberg rings specifically to a western theme. Chatman uses simple but exquisite harmonies and sustained, arching melodic lines. Duration: 1:40.

Spring Carol

Based on text by Robert Louis Stevenson, the piece has a rousing melody set in compound duple meter. The music depicts the imagery of streamlets gushing and the many sounds of rejoicing nature that accompany spring. A brief section in simple meter portrays a scene of pastoral tranquility. The piece finishes with the intial melody accompanied by a soaring descant. Duration: 3:15

Gelobet sei Gott

Composed for the Columbus International Children's Choir, Tatiana Kats, Conductor, for their performance at the 2018 World Choir Games in Tshwane, South Africa, as an opener to their sacred music set. This is a lively piece that alternates between call-and-answer sections and homophonic ones, exhibiting an A-B-A form overall. It is a great opener to any concert. Duration: 2:15

Perhaps They Are Not Stars

Based on an Inuit proverb, this reflective piece was originally composed for the Centennial High School Concert Choir from Circle Pines, Minnesota, in memory of the composer's mother, Coralynn, who passed away when he was five years old. A mood of contemplation is set by a leisurely text rhythm and lush chords. The proverb's counterpoint to the title is that stars are our lost loved ones shining light upon us. The music is timeless and touching.

Lead Us Home

Commisioned by the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, Lead Us Home speaks to the power music holds: its ability to comfort, to transport, and heal. In moments of conflict, strife, and grief, we turn to music to lead us home and make us whole. The music is homophonic and set in a hymn-like style. At the end of each concert in its 2018 tour, the orchestra would stand and sing this piece a cappella. Duration: 3:00

Shine! shine! shine! from A Song of Joys

An arrangement of the second movement of Stephen Chatman's A Song of Joys. The piano accompaniment replicates pitches within an extensive set of Chinese bao gongs featured in the original version. The number two is the primary concept of the song—two lovers, two timbres (voice and piano), two pairs of flowing contrapuntal vocal lines, two additional contrapuntal “gong” parts, two formal sections, harmonic dissonance versus resolution, tutti versus a cappella, and two climactic cadences. In the Bleak Midwinter Earth Stood Hard as Iron

The original tune is set in F major using traditional harmony. The suspensions are set at words which reveal tension to be resolved, which I have not always done. The tonal structure is of a modified strophic design (A-[A]-B-A) in five verses.The textual structure is curious and even novel for that era. The A-(A)-B section of each verse makes "mixed" use of the words. Yet, the ends of the last "A" sections contain only three words or three syllables.Thus, "give my heart" sounds strangely empty on first hearing. However, it makes the structural beat pattern consistent. Yes, the rhyme scheme is A-B-C-B-D-E-F-E. Also, I have purposefully used all five originalverses so as to obtain full, glorious, Christmas storytelling!What gift can I give to the Christ Child? If the midwinter snow fully covers up all my transgressions, only to have them revealed again in spring, then I will give The Christ Child my contrite heart to balance the wager of my soul! -James McCulloughDuration: 4:30

Your Hand in Mine : In manus tuas

The writers' intent is to incorporate the sacred and the secular in this adaptation of the final, or seventh, of the Last Words of Christ, "Into your hands I commend my spirit." This movement, set for SSAATTBB chorus unaccompanied, begins with the Latin text and ends with Brian Newhouse's poem in English. The English text personalizes the experience and causes the listener to reflect on death in general, both Christ's and our own. Duration: 6:30 Part of the Lee Nelson Choral Series.

Winter Snow

"In December, 2014, my nine-year-old granddaughter, Charlotte, showed me 'Winter Snow,' a poemthat she had written as a school assignment. I was taken by the text: by its imagery, rhythm, andassonance. Charlotte gave me permission to set her words to music. The voices are supported by a gentle piano accompaniment, mostly in eighth note motion, decorated with occasional mordents.Duration: 2:42

Peace : From I Will Sing To The Stars

Written for the Jacksonville Children's Chorus, this SSAA setting of a Sara Teasdale text is set completely for unaccompanied voices. The text, "Peace flows into me…," is introduced on a single note, gently expanding to a fuller sonority. The next section features a straightforward declamation of the text, followed by a rhythmic ostinato that lays a foundation for legato vocal lines in the upper voices. The piece then concludes on the single note from which it began. The second movement of the three-movement work, "I Will Sing to the Stars." Duration 4:25
