Lili Boulanger: Trois Morceaux Pour Piano

Lili Boulanger was the sister of the famous teacher Nadia Boulanger who taught Aaron Copland, Elliott Carter and Philip Glass amongst others. She was a composer for the last 10 years of her tragically short life - she died at 25 - and her music stands in the main line of French music exemplified by Faure, somewhat tinged with the influence of Debussy's Impressionism. It is generally beautiful, delicately coloured, and touching. These 'Three Pieces For Piano' display her very personal musical signature. The first piece, D'un Vieux Jardin (Of an Old Garden) conjures up mystery and nostalgia. 'D'un Jardin Clair (Of a Clear/Bright Garden) has more movement and is bathed in light. The Cortege is more lively without being fast. Shifting rhythmic accents, tricky runs and contrasting dynamics make this an exciting piece.

For two solo voices (tenor and baritone) and mixed chorus, interspersed with hymns to be sung by the congregation. This work depicts the last few days of the Saviour's life. The rejoicing of the multitude with hosannas and palms, the view of Jersusalem from the steep of Olivet and the lament over the city, the dispersal of the money changers in the Temple, and the sad nocturnal walk on the Mount of Olivet are all portrayed in the First Part. Part Two opens with the Last Supper, at which Jesus washed His disciples' feet, and commanded them to love one another. Then follows the agonizing prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, the sudden appearance of the hostile crowd, the abandonment of Jesus by His deciples, His utter loneliness among ruthless enemies, the turmoil before Pilate when Barabbas is released, the tragedy of the Cross, and the triumph of Calvary.

Vincenzo Bellini: I Puritani (Libretto)

This opera was written when Bellini had established a name for himself with Norma and La Sonnambula and had just moved to Paris. The libretto is by Count Carlo Pepoli after the play Roundheads and Cavaliers by Lancelot and Xavier. In it, Elvira, a Roundhead, learns from her uncle Giorgio her father Lord Walton has agreed to let her marry her sweetheart Arturo She is overjoyed, though Riccardo, who also loved her, is distraught. However, Queen Henrietta Maria, a Royalist, is a miserable prisoner of Walton. In the chaos of the wedding preparation, Arturo, Elvira and Riccardo disguise her in Elvira's wedding veil and smuggle her out of the castle. The escape is discovered and Arturo is declared a traitor. He is chased through a furious storm, but Riccardo and Giorgio help him escape and he finds Elvira in a wooded garden. He explains why he had to flee, but her cries of fear and the approaching army bring guards who arrest Arturo. He is saved moments before his execution by Cromwell's declaration of amnesty and all ends happily. This is the Schirmer edition of the Libretto in the original Italian with an English translation by William Weaver.
