Violin Concerto No. 2

Kalevi Aho composed the second violin concerto in 2015 for the Finnish violinist Elina Vähälä. The 32-minute concerto is a large-scale virtuoso work dominated by the soloist. The piano reduction is made by Kari Vehmanen.

Concerto no. 2

Kalevi Aho's (b. 1949) concerto no. 2 for cello and orchestra (2013) is in five movements performed without a break. It begins with a swinging Berceuse, followed by a very quick, virtuosic Presto in 5/8 time. The heart of the concerto is the cadenza-like third movement, Adagio, dominated throughout by the soloist. A fairly short Allegretto is followed by the closing Epilogue. This has flashbacks to the opening movement, and they lead to a cadenza in which the soloist plays only flageolet notes and pizzicatos. The concerto ends with a virtuosic coda in 5/8 time evocative of the second movement. Arto Noras gave the concerto its first performance with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra conducted by Osmo Vänskä in Naantali on June 5, 2014. It was a joint commission from the Naantali Music Festival and the Lahti Symphony Orchestra. Sonata for Violoncello and Piano

A large-scale work in four movements lasting over half an hour, Kalevi Aho's Sonata for violoncello and piano (2019) in four movements is furios, virtuosic and poweful, with a lyrical second movement. The third movement is a cello cadenza, provided in two versions: with and without throat singing.

Souvenir

Klami (1900-1961) was an acclaimed Finnish orchestral composer whose works in other genres also deserve to be known. Souvenir for solo violin and string ensemble dates from 1929. It is like a melodically expressive, small-scale chamber ensemble counterpart of the virtuoso, imaginatively written Opernredoute concert waltz for large orchestra.

The Russian-born Victoria Yagling (1946 2011) had a career as cellist which served as an excellent accompaniment to the composition she began at an early age. At the Moscow Conservatory she was a cello student of Mstislav Rostropovich and Dmitry Kabalevsky for composition. In her wide composition catalogue the three cello concertos are her main works. Her expressive, romantically orientated style is Russian in spirit and has grown out of the soil provided by Prokofiev and Shostakovich. The first concerto was composed in 1975 and the second one (1983 84) is dedicated to Rostropovich.

String Quartet No. 2 : Allerheiligentag Iii

Jyrki Linjama's second string quartet (2018) is subtitled Allerheiligentag III. The material for the Allerheiligentag cycle is a Finnish folk chorale for All Saints' Day (no. 146 in the Finnish Hymn Book). The first work in the cycle is a string trio (2007), the second a piece for orchestra (2009), and the fourth and fifth are solo works for viola da gamba and violin.The composer tells: “The choice of topic and material for the string trio was originally prompted by the venue at which it was to be premiered: the old church on the island of Seili (Själö). The bleak history of the island's leper and mental hospital evoked images of suffering and death. I got so attached to the harshand beautiful melody that it began to generate a whole cycle.” The string quartet is in three movements (slow-quick-slow) tensed in different ways by contrasts. The first movement has both swinging softness and cutting sharpness, the Scherzo the wildness of a dance of death and lyricism, and the finale the irrevocability of a funeral march and tender melodiousness.

In spring 2006 Kalevi Aho came across the posthumously published collection The Book of Questions (1974) by Pablo Neruda, the Chilean poet and Nobel Prize winner. The collection consists exclusively of questions, many of which are strange or unusual in character: they force the reader to look at things in an entirely new perspective. Aho selected the texts for the 24-minute song cycle (2006) from Neruda’s questions and combined their Finnish translation (by Katja Kallio) into eleven new sets, each containing between two and seven different questions.

Concerto For Piano and String Orchestra : Piano Concerto No. 2

Aho’s second piano concerto is scored for a string orchestra comprising just twenty players. The demanding piano writing is honouring the ‘Beethovenian-Lisztian-Brahmsian’ pianistic tradition. At times the piano part is lean and linear, but the work also contains multi-layered, full-toned piano textures and massive rolling octaves. The concerto requires great artistry on the part of the performer. The 30-minute concerto comprises 3 untitled movements played without a break.

Mot Natten - Towards Night : 3 Nocturnes and 2 Interludes For Cello and Guitar

Mikko Heiniö's Mot natten (Towards night), three nocturnes and two interludes for cello and guitar was composed in 2018. This suite found its inspiration and name in Finnish poet Bo Carpelan's (1926-2011) posthumous poetry collection Mot natten (2013), though the movements are not tied to specific poems. The first nocturne, Obscuro (‘twilight'), dominated by pizzicatos, is followed by a more dynamic interlude, Spasimo (‘spasm'). The fragile second nocturne, Sospiro (‘sigh'), is coloured by delicate micro-interval chords plucked on the guitar between the left hand and the nut. The interlude Passi (‘steps') leads with taps on the sound box straight into the third nocturne,Battito (‘beat'), the way having been paved by the heartbeat of strong guitar pizzicatos. The duration is c. 11'30''. The product includes one full score and separate parts for guitar and violoncello.

Elegie For String Orchestra

Siri Brander (1866-1934) was one of the first female composers to be played by the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra. Elegie (originally for piano) was arranger for string orchestra by A. E. Westerlind and first performed in 1894. More than 120 years later it was recovered in the archives. The small treasure of pure salon romanticism has the duration of 4 minutes. The package includes a full score and a set of string parts (2+2.3.2.2.1).

Vier Galgenlieder op. 51b

Bergman's hit piece for 3 speakers and speaking (mixed) chorus with a duration of 6 minutes. These 'gallows songs' are settings of poems by Christian Morgenstern. The popular Das grosse Lalula is the first movement of the VierGalgenlieder. The second is scored for women's voices while the full choir is held in reserve for the third and fourth songs. A rewarding work also from the singers' perspective which employs a varied palette of expressivetechniques (1 Das grosse Lalula - 2 Tapetenblume - 3 Igel und Agel - 4 Unter Zeiten).
