Six delightful miniatures from Leevi Madetoja (1887–1947, one of the most significant Finnish contemporaries of Sibelius) are now available as new guitar arrangements by Lauri Manninen. The Miniatures suite (1914) has five movements: The Evening Star, Valsette, Nocturne, The Game and The Children’s March. The Legend from Suite Pastorale (1916) was also originally composed for piano.

Variationes ex Bene Quondam

Juhani Nuorvala’s (b. 1961) Variationes ex ”Bene quondam” for string orchestra was commissioned by the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra in 2017. Collaboration with the musicians led to experiments with microtonality. The work is based on a late medieval song from the Finnish collection Piae cantiones (Pious songs).

Souvenir

Klami (1900-1961) was an acclaimed Finnish orchestral composer whose works in other genres also deserve to be known. Souvenir for solo violin and string ensemble dates from 1929. It is like a melodically expressive, small-scale chamber ensemble counterpart of the virtuoso, imaginatively written Opernredoute concert waltz for large orchestra.

Vier Galgenlieder op. 51b

Bergman's hit piece for 3 speakers and speaking (mixed) chorus with a duration of 6 minutes. These 'gallows songs' are settings of poems by Christian Morgenstern. The popular Das grosse Lalula is the first movement of the VierGalgenlieder. The second is scored for women's voices while the full choir is held in reserve for the third and fourth songs. A rewarding work also from the singers' perspective which employs a varied palette of expressivetechniques (1 Das grosse Lalula - 2 Tapetenblume - 3 Igel und Agel - 4 Unter Zeiten).

Valses Lentes et Amoureuses

Klami (1900-1961) was an acclaimed Finnish orchestral composer whose works in other genres also deserve to be known. Valses lentes et amoureuses consists of two waltzes and dates from 1932. It is one of the most graceful pieces of salon music ever composed by Uuno Klami. The first waltz, Con passione, begins in subtly sensual, veiled, passionate mood, like an invitation to a dance. The second movement begins with a languorously erotic and chromatic introduction leading to a livelier Wienerlied in a G-major landscape.

In spring 2006 Kalevi Aho came across the posthumously published collection The Book of Questions (1974) by Pablo Neruda, the Chilean poet and Nobel Prize winner. The collection consists exclusively of questions, many of which are strange or unusual in character: they force the reader to look at things in an entirely new perspective. Aho selected the texts for the 24-minute song cycle (2006) from Neruda’s questions and combined their Finnish translation (by Katja Kallio) into eleven new sets, each containing between two and seven different questions.

Concerto no. 2

Kalevi Aho's (b. 1949) concerto no. 2 for cello and orchestra (2013) is in five movements performed without a break. It begins with a swinging Berceuse, followed by a very quick, virtuosic Presto in 5/8 time. The heart of the concerto is the cadenza-like third movement, Adagio, dominated throughout by the soloist. A fairly short Allegretto is followed by the closing Epilogue. This has flashbacks to the opening movement, and they lead to a cadenza in which the soloist plays only flageolet notes and pizzicatos. The concerto ends with a virtuosic coda in 5/8 time evocative of the second movement. Arto Noras gave the concerto its first performance with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra conducted by Osmo Vänskä in Naantali on June 5, 2014. It was a joint commission from the Naantali Music Festival and the Lahti Symphony Orchestra. This product consists of the solo part (18 pages) and piano reduction by Kari Vehmanen (62 pages) - have a look inside by clicking “sample”. The concerto is scored for a fairly small orchestra. The instrumentation is 2(II=afl)2(II=ca)2(II=bcl)2-2200-bar-02-str and the orchestral material is available for hire from the publisher.

Children's Lied 2 : Repertoire For Young Singers and Pianists

Children's Lied 2 is a collection of repertoire for young singers and pianists with songs from a wide range of countries and cultures.
