Volume 9 in the series of Supplements is mainly devoted to hitherto unpublished or inaccessible works. Apart from the piano score of the Berlioz symphony it contains smaller-scale late masterpieces (Excelsior!, Resignazione), the Album leaves written in Woronince in 1847, the large-scale but unfinished and not fully worked out Figaro and Don Juan fantasia, incorporating several Mozart themes, the piano piece No.1 in A flat major, two unpublished works incorrectly identified up till now by the special literature, the Maometto fantasia and the Siege de Corinthe (both transcriptions of Rossini works), and the volume also includes three other unpublished works (the Piano piece in Fmajor, the Cavatina from Robert le Diable by Meyerbeer, and Freudvoll und leidvoll, written down for Pauline von Iwanowska. The Prefaces preceding the scores, which give very accurate, detailed information about the genesis of the works, make interesting reading in themselves,

This selection is intended to reveal a less-known aspect of the genius of Franz Liszt, the greatest pianist of the 19th century: as a master of piano miniatures. While his large-scale works written over many years show Liszt as a striving composer for whom the creative process was difficult, at the same time, hidden in the shadow of the monumental peaks, the 'moments musicaux' tend to capture him in the process of improvisation, at the moment when a compositional idea flashed into his mind and was first noted down. The miniatures that feature in our selection trace his creative path through six decades (1827-1885), from his youthful testing of his wings right up to his finalfarewell. The manuscript of any piece that did not later become part of a cycle or the starting-point for a larger-scale composition generally remained in the mists of obscurity as a treasured memento preserved by one of his pupils or admirers.

It may seem surprising that the pieces do not reveal the stylistic features that typified Hungarian composition in the mid-nineteen-fifties. These finely-proportioned miniatures reflect the composer’s diverse, many-faceted interests: definite tonal relations and free use of the twelve-tone scale, or even dodecaphony are all equally characteristic of them, yet their musical language is fundamentally Hungarian. The character pieces of varying length offer material for piano students to play from the upper music school level to intermediate level.

Vocal music, especially church music, has always played an important role in the oeuvre of the extremely versatile composer Sándor Szokolay (1931-2013). He left behind four complete mass settings among these Missa Pannonica , written for six-part mixed choir, was composed in 1987 for the Tomkins Vocal Ensemble conducted by János Dobra. János Malina praised the nearly half-hour, large-scale and virtuosic work as follows: "The mass is an outstanding achievement within Szokolay's sacred music oeuvre. It is a composition with extremely rich musical contents, and it is impressively spontaneous and powerful, combining a broad range of styles, traditions, and influences in a veryoriginal way."

Later, at the instigation of the excellent folk dance choreographer Miklós Manninger, an arrangement for wind band was prepared, in order to widen the ensemble’s repertoire of German national pieces by the addition of a Hungarian dance. The production scored a resounding success not only with the audience but also with the musicians who performed in it, with the result that before long the composer prepared from the Bottle Dance an independent work for wind ensemble - a showy piece, virtuosic in its effect yet easily playable. The youth orchestra arrangement is a simplified andshortened version of the work for full-scale orchestra.

In Bartók's career the period between 1910 and 1914 was devoted to intensive folk song collecting work. In those years his attention was focussed principally on Romanian folk music (in 1913 he published, for example, the Bihar collection and most of the Máramaros collection: in March 1913 in just two weeks he recorded 209 songs). The inspiration gained from his collecting journeys in Romania first appeared in the vocal folk song arrangements he composed in 1915, and in the smaller-scale, moderately difficult piano series based on Romanian folk music material, the Romanian Folk Dances, Kolindák and the Sonatina. In the three movements of the Sonatina ('Pipers', 'Bears' Dance' and'Finale') Bartók used altogether five original Romanian melodies. In 1931 he made an orchestral arrangement of this exceptionally popular work and entitled it Transylvanian Dances. (Hungaroton HCD 31604)

Modern piano playing can be no more reduced to such technical and musical formulas as in the days of Liszt, Czerny or Dohnányi. The piano works of our contemporary composers do not demand the techniques of the classical scale, broken chords and series of parallel intervals: they are more inclined to demand from the performer a secure feeling for position, rich rhythmic imagination, a receptivity towards colour and dynamics which will become apparent in refined nuances of touch, the capacity for lightning adaptation in quickly changing ways of playing - in other words, a richness of colour in playing the instrument which was unimaginable in earlier times. For the carrying outof these demands increased training is required in the kinds of movement used in playing but well developed hearing is also important for the performer to be able to control the sounding variety.

The 'Four Piano Pieces' (1. Study for the Left Hand, 2. Fantasy I, 3. Fantasy II, 4. Scherzo) was composed between January and October 1903. 'The 'Study for the Left Hand' is a large-scale sonata movement. The eclecticism of 'Fantasy I' composed on 8 February is well illustrated by the fact that his contemporary audience associated it with several composers' styles. The [piece] is dedicated 'to Madame Emma Gruber'.The 'Fantasy II' was written after the symphonic poem Kossuth was finished, in October 1903 in Berlin. It is a piece of Hungarian mood, which Bartók dedicated to his childhood friends 'Misses Emsy and Irmy Jurkovics'. The extraordinary 'Scherzo' that concludes theseries is dedicated to Dohnányi.
