Stephen Chatman’s setting of Sara Teasdale’s whimsical poem pertaining to a brown-thrush, April, love and kisses, emulates the meaning, strict rhythm, rhyme and strophic structure of the text. The soft rolled chords of the harp-like piano accompaniment highlight the lilting 6/8-meter, folk-like melody, and consistent homophonic choral texture. The surprising joy of the Resurrection is conveyed through jubilant fanfares in the accompaniment and a shifting of the rhythm between 3/4 and implied 6/8 meters. As the mood softens, a more melodic section expresses the lyrics, "I know that my Redeemer liveth." After the unaccompanied chorus sings "All glorious Risen Christ" and a brief moment of silence, the piece bursts forth again with fanfares and thicker choral textures that build in excitement to the end. The beloved hymn Be Thou My Vision has long been part of our rich musical heritage of hymnody. The text is by St. Dallan Forgaill (6th Century Irish), and the tune is Slane (Traditional Irish) which was added somewhat later to the text. Each verse is set differently, giving variety and expressiveness to the text, which sometimes departs from the original. The composer's intent was an expansive paraphrase of the tune and text, and the result is one of the most rewarding settings of this hymn that you will encounter. Duration: 6:00

Variations on Dona nobis pacem

The singing of Dona nobis pacem is an annual holiday tradition at the Eastman School of Music. I wrote the Variations on Dona nobis pacem to play at a gathering of University of Rochester alumni in November of 2016. In creating a solo piano piece from vocal material, I introduce the tune alone, then its bass, which is similar to that of Bach’s Goldberg Variations. Nine variations and a finale follow in a variety of styles that recall Classical and Romantic-period composers. -David Evan Thomas Duration: 6:30
