Katana ZERO is a hybrid of a platformer and a dynamic action game, which is the debut project of the independent studio Askiisoft. Its release was taken over by Adult Swim Games, whose portfolio includes such titles as, for example, Volgarr the Viking, Death's Gambit, or HeadLander.
Katana ZERO is set in a city full of contrasts in the 1980s. The metropolis is not only teeming with nightclubs gathering dark star types; while playing, we also have the opportunity to visit rich neighborhoods, slums, and even the interior of the old cathedral. The motivation of the ninja warrior we manage is revenge, in which he is helped by his inseparable companion - the title katana.
In Katana ZERO, the action is presented from a side perspective. The gameplay comes down to traversing linear locations and fighting the enemies you encounter. The range of the main character's movements is wide - our warrior can run at dizzying speed, jump long distances, climb walls, dodge and, if necessary, sneak behind the backs of enemies.
The battles are extremely fast, and the key to success is dexterity and appropriate reflexes. In many cases, it is helpful to take advantage of the so-called Chronos - a drug, under the influence of which our ninja can slow down time, for example to deflect a projectile fired at it. Ubiquitous traps like murderous lasers pose an additional threat. The game is characterized by a high level of difficulty, and the protagonist dies from a single hit or shot.
The two-dimensional graphics of Katana ZERO can be liked - the production was realized in a pixelart style, enriched with modern visual effects. The vendetta achieved by the ninja is accompanied by fast, electronic music.
