John Tavener: Fear And Rejoice, O People

In this piece for unaccompanied SATB choir, fervent, dance-like music appears side by side with fear and awe, producing a dramatic contrast.The work was commissioned jointly by the Dean and Chapter of Winchester Cathedral and by Mrs Ruth Daniel on behalf of St. John's College, Cambridge, for performances during Advent 1997. There were simultaneous first performances on 29th November 1997, given by the Choir of Winchester Cathedral conducted by David Hill, and the choir of St. John's College conducted by Christopher Robinson in Cambridge.

Igor Stravinsky: Ragtime For Eleven Instruments

Ragtime is a piece that grew directly out of the 'Ragtime' section of A Soilder's Tale. It is scored for a small chamber orchestra of eleven instruments: flute, clarinet, two horns, trombone, big drum, snare drum, side drum, cymbals, cimbalom, first and second violin, viola and double bass. The cimbalom assumes a prominent, almost soloistic role, as Stravinsky only became aware of it in 1915, and sought to use it whenever possible there after.

Jocelyn Pook?s Hearing Voices was commissioned by BBC3 for the BBC Concert Orchestra, who gave the first performance at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, on 3 December 2012, with Melanie Pappenheim, mezzosoprano, conducted by Charles Hazlewood.The text for Hearing Voices was written by Emma Bernard. It also uses the words of artists Bobby Baker and Julie McNamara, Jocelyn's relatives Phyllis Williams and Mary Pook, and the seamstress Agnes Richter, inmate in a German asylum in the 1890s, who covered her straightjacket with densely embroidered text. The world premiere took place on 27th June 2003 at the Temple Church, London, performed by the Choir of the Temple Church and the Holst Singers, with Patricia Rozario (soprano), conducted by Stephen Layton, as part of The City of London Festival, 2003. The anthem Awed by the beauty was arranged in 2005. Byzantine text, translated by Mother Thekla. ?Oh? should be sung as in the ?o? of ?log?. Breathe when necessary, but not simultaneously. ?? and ???? represent microtones, the characteristic ?breaks in the voice? of Eastern chant.
