Peter Maxwell Davies: Cross Lane Fair

This work for Northumbrian pipes, bodhran and orchestra was inspired by the composer's visits to Cross Lane Fair with his parents when he was a young boy. The work was commissioned by the BBC Philharmonic and the St. Magnus Festival (at which it was first performed in 1994 by Mark Jordan, Rob Lea and the BBC Philharmonic conducted by the composer). By limiting the instrumentation to drums only, the composer explored several kinds of patterning, the principal one being cross-rhythms in triplets played with two sticks. Duration 16 minutes.

Rory Boyle: Passion Canticles

This work for SATB (divisi) Choir and Organ was commissioned by the Birmingham bach Sociey with funds made available by West Midlands Arts. This work is essentially in ternary form, although nearly all the melodic material is drawn from the opening section. The two outer sections are settings of Latin texts, the first being a Benediction of the Cross, and the second a Prayer. In the middle section the words of the text (attributed to Robert Fayrfax (1470-1527)) have been slightly altered.

Words by George Mackay Brown.'Written for the BBC Singers, this piece requires a high level of choral expertise in its rhythms, intricate textures (though nearly always in four parts), wide-ranging vocal lines and characteristically dark but luminous harmony, impregnated with tritones and seconds. Not for the first time, Davies and George Mackay Brow follow the Stations of the Cross, though the fourteen sections are joined into a continuous slow-fast-slow musical movement, and the references to the events of Holy Week are oblique.Vocal score with piano accompaniment for rehearsal purposes.

It belongs to a much larger work called 'Last Rites' which I have been thinking about for about a year. It is based on the mystical idea of St. John of the Cross which obsesses me - "the more I live the more I must die." Hence the deliberately static nature of Coplas. In once sense Coplas is a prolonged decoration of the 'et sepultus est' cadence from the Crucifixus in Bach's Mass in B minor. In another sense I think of it not so much as my music but a way of listening to Bach's music. ' - John Tavener

Peter Maxwell Davies: March On The Pole Star Parts

Like many of Davies?s smaller works, this is in a relatively lucid modal style, midway between the clarity of his carols and the complications of his symphonies: the opening is in a kind of B flat minor, and the close is triumphantly in G flat major. What happens in between -- always in 4/4 march time but usually with exuberant syncopations and cross-rhythms - is a sequence of transformations of the theme heard first from the second trumpet on the top line at the start; it will be heard again from the horn, and from the first trumpet in upward-moving inversion, with brilliant climaxes to punctuate. An ebullient piece, in a simplified yet still very distinctive harmonic and rhythmic style, and surely destined to make a rousing encore item. Arranged for brass quintet.

The five pieces can of course still be performed separately, or brought togetheras a twenty-five minute setting of Roy Campbell?s translation from the original Spanish of this vivid andintense poem.
