Noël Nouvelet : Weihnachten mit dem Ulmer Spatzen Chor

The Ulmer Spatzen Choir, under the direction of Hans de Gilde, is one of the most well-known children’s choirs in Germany. The girls’ choir, a part of the Spatzen Choir, presents a selection of favorite pieces from the choral collection Weihnachtslieder für Sopran- und Altstimmen [Carus 2.135] which is being published at the same time. Here well-known and lesser-known works are paired, classical pieces stand side by side with gospel, or the unusual appears next to pieces with catchy melodies.

Der Holdestein : Chorwerke von Schreker, Fuchs und Braunfels

Franz Schreker had a long and close association with choral music. As founder and director of Vienna’s Philharmonic Chorus he conducted world premieres of works by contemporary composers. It is surprising, therefore, that Schreker wrote relatively few independent choral works. Most of these are recorded here for the first time: The Orpheus Vokalensemble, under Michael Alber, makes an essential contribution to this largely unknown side of Schreker with this survey of his choral music. The recording is rounded off with choral works by Schreker's teacher Robert Fuchs, his contemporary Walter Braunfels and choral arrangements of three Schreker songs by Clytus Gottwald.

Buxtehude: Membra Jesu nostri [Rademann]

For Passion in 1680 Dieterich Buxtehude composed his greatest ortatorio-like work, the cantata cycle "Membra Jesu nostri". He dedicated it to his friend Gustav Düben, the Swedish Court Composer. Basically, the seven individual cantatas followed thestructural scheme of an “ instrumental introduction choral movement based on a biblical text vocal solo [aria] based on a sacred text of the Middle Ages and a repetition of the opening choral movement.” Within this scheme the feet, knees,hands, side, chest, heart and face of the crucified Christ are treated allegorically. Under the direction of Hans-Christoph Rademann the solo ensemble and the Dresdner Kammerchor have achieved amost impressive rendering of this work, which isentirely indebted to the gesture and expression of the text. The CD is rounded off by world premiere performances of two chorale cantatas by this composer from Lübeck, the 300th anniversary of whose death is being commemorated this year.

Hassler: In dulci jubilo

The Peñalosa Ensemble, founded in 1996, is a vocal quartet of four top singers who are absolute specialists for early music: Susan Eitrich, Sebastian Mory, Jörg Deutschewitz and Pierre Funck. The ensemble’s inimitable sound is stamped equally by individuality and homogeneity, its music-making by expressivity and colorfulness. This recording presents Advent and Christmas motets by Hans Leo Hassler [1564-1612]. His music is characterized on the one hand by contrapuntal subtlety and, on the other hand, by the greatest charm and delicacy and is, thus, tailor-made for Christmas.

Reinhard Keiser: Dialogus von der Geburt Christi

This world premiere recording of the Weihnachtsoratorium by Reinhard Keiser makes available one of the few surviving sacred works by a musician who was highly regarded by his contemporaries, primarily as a composer of operas. Well-known Christmas chorales, opulently scored, with rich polyphony, are joined by movements which depict with great delicacy the secene around the crib at Bethlehem. This CD includes, also recorded for the first time, the Magnificat by Christoph Graupner, written in 1772 to support his application for the post of Thomaskantor in Leipzig.

Part 5 of the collections of four-voiced motets and arias published by Johann Adam Hiller represents a continuation of the previous volumes: It contains works by two great master of the motet, Homilius and Rolle, as well as, for the first time, motets by Neefe [known as Beethoven's teacher], the Kantor from Merseburg, Johann Gottfried Weiske, and by Johann Weilhelm Häsler, a composer and organist born in Erfurt.
