A Poem by Goethe'.Goethe’s dramatic ballad 'The First Walpurgis Night' inspired Mendelssohn to write a magnificent and vivid portrayal of the conflict between an old heathen community and the new aspirations of Christianization, between belief and superstition on both sides. In 1833 Mendelssohn had his ballad premiered, but he decided to make far-reaching revisions before he finally had the work published in 1844. The Carus edition by the leading Mendelssohn scholar R. Larry Todd is based on the first printed edition of the score and thus the last authentic version of the work. Rheinberger: Ave Maria [Musica Sacra X]

Today Rheinberger is known primarily as a composer of motets for several voices and for masses for mixed choir. On the other hand, the fact that he also composed a whole series of solo works or choral works for women's voices is today much less well known, although he wrote such works throughout his entire creative life and a good number of these are among his most popular and commercially successful compositions. Volume 10 of the Rheinberger CD series is dedicated to this interesting, long neglected genre in Rheinberger's sacred oeuvre.

Mendelssohn describes to his friend Klingemann the 1840 work as "a ‘symphony for chorus and orchestra’… First three symphonic movements, to which 12 choral- and solo- movements are appendaged; the words from the Psalms, and indeed all pieces, vocal and instrumental, are composed in the words ‘Everything which has breath, Praise the Lord’; one understands by this that first the instruments give praise in their own way, and then the chorus and the individual voices."

Johann Philipp Förtsch: Ich freue mich im Herrn

The musical output of Johann Philipp Förtsch [1652 1732] is closely tied to the development of the Hamburg opera. He was among its founders and at times he made essential contributions to the musical life of the Hansa city. In addition to his activities as a composer, singer and librettist, he is recorded in history as a doctor and a diplomat. Among his surviving compositions are several works for the stage and instrumental music, but above all, 80 sacred cantatas, of which several are presented here as world premiere recordings.
