Grover's Corners : from 'Our Town'

Taken from his own concert suite (dedicated to Leonard Bernstein) of his film score, Copland's own words best describe the musical approach to “Grover's Corners”. He explained, “For the film version, they were counting on the music to translate the transcendental aspects of the story. I tried for clean and clear sounds and in general used straight-forward harmonies and rhythms that would project the serenity and sense of security of the story.”

In the bleak midwinter

A simple and short but very beautiful setting of the well-known Christina Rossetti text by Cornish composer Becky McGlade. An atmosphere of cold, winter stillness is conveyed in this piece with its gentle dissonances and slow,homophonic movement, and the music follows the natural rhythm of the words, resulting in frequent changes of bar length. Each verse is set to the same music, but in the final verse the music responds to the climax of the poem,with the words ‘give my heart’ repeated three times, rising in intensity but then falling away again to finish as the piece began, in quiet stillness.A rewarding sing and an excellent alternative tootherfrequently-performed settings of the text.

Text: George Wither Publisher: Boosey & Hawkes Difficulty level: 2 These [I Lov'd a Lass & Lift Boy] are two delightful and contrasted part-songs for choir and piano which ought to be a gift to choirs looking for rare secularrepertoire for their concert programmes. I lov'd a lass is full of fun, while the challenge lies in the regularly changing metre. The choirs first bar is in 7/8 and is followed by 5/4 and then 3/4. Later on Britten gives us 3/4,7/8, 11/8, 4/4, 5/4, 7/8, 4/4 in successive bars but this all adds to the entertainment. There are lots of portamenti too in what adds up to a passionate little piece.
