Baserat på det allestädes närvarande M5 Stuart lätta tankskrovet, gav M8 75 mm Howitzer Motor Carriage (HMC) välbehövligt mobilt artilleristöd till amerikanska anfallsstyrkor. Replacing the M5 Stuart turret with a more spacious open-topped turret to house a short-barrelled M2 (and later the M3) 75mm howitzer and a mix of smoke and high explosive ammunition. A pintle-mounted .50 Cal heavy machine gun provided additional defensive firepower.Named after the American Civil War general, Winfield Scott, the M8 saw action in North African, Tunisian, North West Europe, Italian and Pacific campaigns in World War II as well as during the Indochina and Vietnam wars. Fielded almost exclusively by US Army or USMC forces, a total of 1,778 M8 Scott HMCs were produced. Den amerikanska versionen, klassad som ersättningsstandard under beteckningen 57 mm Gun M1, baserades på 6 punds Mk 2, varav två enheter togs emot från Storbritannien. Produktionen startade tidigt 1942 och fortsatte till 1945 och M1A2 introducerade britterna övning av fri travers, d.v.s. pistolen kan passeras genom att besättningen trycker och drar i slutstycket, istället för enbart en växlad travers, från september 1942. En stabilare vagn utvecklades men introducerades inte. När 57 mm togs i bruk i USA introducerades en modifierad dragpunktsdesign (M1A3) men endast för användning i USA. Amerikanska granatkonstruktioner och produktion släpade efter introduktionen av pistolen när den väl godkändes för service och så till en början var endast AP-skott tillgänglig. HE-skalet var inte tillgängligt förrän efter landsättningarna i Normandie och brittiska lager anskaffades för att täcka dess frånvaro. Våren 1943, efter erfarenheten av den nordafrikanska kampanjen där allierade vapen kämpade mot tysk rustning, erkände infanterigrenen av den amerikanska armén måste ställa en tyngre pansarvärnskanon än 37 mm M3. och från den 26 maj 1943 inkluderade ett regements pansarvärnskompani nio 57 mm kanoner och varje bataljon hade en pansarvärnspluton med tre kanoner vilket gav totalt 18 kanoner per regemente. Webbexklusivt: inkluderar nu 100 mm x 80 mm oval MDF-bas (Sarissa )Obs: Modeller levereras omonterade och omålade --- Vi har massor med spel av alla de slag och även gott om merchandise. ---The U.S. version, classified as substitute standard under the designation 57 mm Gun M1, was based on the 6 pounder Mk 2, two units of which were received from the UK.Production started early in 1942 and continued until 1945 and the M1A2 introduced the British practice of free traverse, i.e. the gun could be traversed by the crew pushing and pulling on the breech, instead of a solely geared traverse, from September 1942.A more stable carriage was developed but not introduced. Once the 57 mm entered US service a modified towing point design was introduced (the M1A3) but only for US use.American shell designs and production lagged behind the introduction of the gun once it was accepted for service and so at first only AP shot was available. The HE shell was not available until after the Normandy landings and UK stocks were procured to cover its absence.In spring 1943, following the experience of the North African Campaign where allied guns struggled against German armour, the Infantry branch of the U.S. Army recognised the need to field a heavier antitank gun than the 37 mm M3. and from 26 May 1943, a regiment antitank company included nine 57 mm guns and each battalion had an antitank platoon with three guns giving a total of 18 guns per regiment.Introduction was made in the face of objections by the US Army Infantry Board which believed it too heavy. The Ordnance Board on the other hand where all for it however both Airborne and Cavalry rejected it.
