Magic Garden contrasts starkly with the other movements of the cycle. As with the painting, Johan de Meij has tried to reflect the colourful, naive dream world of Paul Klee. The transparent texture, in which the woods play an important role, makes a striking impression throughout this serene movement.

Magic Garden : Zaubergarten

Inspired by a painting by German artist Paul Klee [1879 - 1940], this work forms the third movement of The Venetian Collection. Completely different than the other parts of the cycle, this movement illustrates Klee's colorful,naive dream world by means of a fragile, transparent texture, bringing the woodwinds into the limelight. The rather abrupt conclusion is preceded by a breathtakingly fast unison passage for the complete woodwind group. (Duration8:00)

The Venetian Collection

The Venetian Collection by Johan de Meij consists of four movements which are all a musical reflection of the four paintings of the same names from the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice.Voice of Space is the first movement of The Venetian Collection. The picture on which the music is based on was painted by the Belgian surrealist artist René Magritte. Along with Ensor, Permeke and Delvaux he was one of the most important painters of the 20th century.The Red Tower was inspired by the painting of the same name (La Torre Rossa) by the Italian artist Giorgio de Chirico, and was awarded first prize in the International Composition Contest in Oman. One of the towers of the mediaevalwalls of the Italian town of Soncino (home to the band for whom Johan de Meij wrote the work for) shows a remarkable resemblance to the tower in the work of De Chirico. Via Claudia : An Imaginary Journey across the Alps

With Via Claudia, the band takes the audience with it on a tour of the Alps. The journey begins on a foggy night near Venice and leads in a solemn procession over steep mountain passes up to the summit, where the sun breaks through and aglorious panorama is revealed. Alpine meadows in full bloom, the echo of an alphorn and brilliant fanfares in the brass accompany the onward journey to Augsburg, where the arrival is celebrated with a triumphal anthem!

Summer : for wind orchestra

Summer is the second in a series of symphonic poems, inspired by the seasons and the folk music of Scandinavia. In Spring, the composera made use of two Swedish folk tunes, whereas Summer focuses on Finnish folk music. The work opens with an impression of the pastoral landscape of Ostrobothnia, an elongated area on the west coast of Finland. As in Spring, the music continues with a polka, based on the opening bars of Suomis Sång (‘Song of Finland’). After a brief horn interlude, a saxophone quartet plays from behind the stage Ant han dansa med mej (‘Ant was dancing with me’), while the orchestra starts up an ostinato bass line that marksthe transition to the finale. A gradual build-up to the ‘Sun Theme’ from Spring results in a radiant conclusion, with a short quotation from the first Symphony of Jean Sibelius, Finland's musical icon.
