Franz Strauss (1822-1905), the father of the composer Richard Strauss, played horn in the Bavarian Court Opera orchestra for more than 40 years and composed a number of repertoire pieces for the horn. The Nocturno, Op. 7, for horn and piano was first published in 1904. With a range that is very well suited to the bass flute, it is a great solo to showcase the expressive and lyrical side of the instrument. It has been arranged here by flutist Jeffrey Beyer. Variations on Theme by Pleyel

Czech violinist Franz Krommer (1759-1831), who composed over 300 works of his own, freely borrowed from Ignace Joseph Pleyel’s String Quartet in F Major to create this set of variations for two oboes and English horn. Shelley Collins has made it possible to perform this delightful arrangement in a variety of combinations of flutes: Two C Flutes and Alto Flute, Two Alto Flutes (in G) and Bass Flute, or Three Similar Flutes. Apollo and Hyacinthus K.38 is the first full, three act opera composed by the eleven-year-old prodigy, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, created for his fellow youth at the school of the University of Salzburg. The libretto, derived from a Greek myth by Ovid, was written in Latin by Father Rufinus Widl and was designed to serve as light relief at its premiere on May 13, 1767 at Salzburg University's Great Hall, presented between the acts of the priests' more serious drama, Clementia Croesi. Composed in two sections, the opening is pastoral and flowing, leading to a joyous and lilting section in 6/8 time. The music of Leopold Mozart is largely overshadowed by that of his prodigious son, Wolfgang Amadeus. The elder Mozart composed a fair amount of music prior to 1763, however from this point, the career of Wolfgang became a central focus of his life and his compositional career was finished. "The Sleigh Ride" (or "Die Schlittenfahrt ") was composed in 1755, originally a movement of his Divertimento in F for orchestra, and has been arranged here for flute choir by Judy Nishimura. It was commissioned by the West Michigan Flute Association for the performance in a flute choir showcase at this convention. The premiere took place on August 2, 2019 at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City, and brought many of those whose lives and careers he touched and shaped together to play this piece as a tribute to his life. The Eleven Chorale Preludes were the last works composed by Johannes Brahms. They were composed in the summer of 1896 after the death of his dear friend, Clara Schumann. The beauty of this particular chorale prelude, Lo How a Rose E'er Blooming, is not lost on audiences, as it is the best known of the eleven. From a compositional view the work has been described in program notes by Scott Foglesong as “richly chromatic, and improvisatory” and “while floridly elaborate never masked the dignified simplicity of the original melody.“ The flute choir adaptation of this work is expanded from the choral prelude format. The choral prelude as composed by Brahms is stated twice. Between thefirst and second stanzas of the chorale is the original setting of the carol.
