Mother-headed Families and Why They Have Increased

Mother-headed Families and Why They Have Increased

The last two decades have seen a dramatic growth in the proportion of families headed by women. Most of these families are poor and include dependent children-causing the development of a large underprivileged class across the western world. This book explores the causes and implications of this development. Because the increase in mother-headed families is an international trend an international perspective has been adopted. The discussion centers on selected countries where certain trends are most visible. Among the western nations particular attention is given to the United States Sweden and the former U. S. S. R. because of their high prevalence of mother-headed families; and trends in some countries with a middling prevalence are also discussed. Japan is included because of its combination of advanced industrialization with a non-western tradition and a low incidence of mother-headed families. Accordingly the book considers broad supranational influences and proposes some explanations that draw on material from history anthropology sociology psychology women's studies economics literature and religious studies. The authors present definitive information on the incidence of mother-headed families across historical epochs and culture groups. This includes an exploration of the conditions under which such families have been many or few and have been treated well or poorly by their communities. They also offer some theoretical explanations for the increasing frequency of this family form and consider whether these interpretations fit the facts that have been gathered. Finally there is a detailed discussion revealing what these explanations may imply for the future-that is whether the number of mother-headed families is likely to increase stabilize or decrease. | Mother-headed Families and Why They Have Increased

Compliance Capitalism How Free Markets Have Led to Unfree Overregulated Workers

Compliance Capitalism How Free Markets Have Led to Unfree Overregulated Workers

In this book Sidney Dekker sets out to identify the market mechanisms that explain how less government paradoxically leads to greater compliance burdens. This book gives shape and substance to a suspicion that has become widespread among workers in almost every industry: we have to follow more rules than ever—and still things can go spectacularly wrong. Much has been privatized and deregulated giving us what is sometimes known as ‘new public management ’ driven by neoliberal market-favoring policies. But paradoxically we typically have more rules today not fewer. It’s not the government: it’s us. This book is the first of a three-part series on the effects of ‘neoliberalism ’ which promotes the role of the private sector in the economy. Compliance Capitalism examines what aspects of the compliance economy what mechanisms of bureaucratization are directly linked to us having given free markets a greater reign over our political economy. The book steps through them picking up the evidence and levers for change along the way. Dekker’s work has always challenged readers to embrace more humane empowering ways to think about work and its quality and safety. In Compliance Capitalism Dekker extends his reach once again writing for all managers board members organization leaders consultants practitioners researchers lecturers students and investigators curious to understand the genuine nature of organizational and safety performance. | Compliance Capitalism How Free Markets Have Led to Unfree Overregulated Workers

Mightier than the Sword How the News Media Have Shaped American History

Mightier than the Sword How the News Media Have Shaped American History

In this engaging examination of the media's influence on US history and politics Rodger Streitmatter visits sixteen landmark episodes from the American Revolution to the present-day fight for gay and lesbian marriage equality. In each of these cases Streitmatter succinctly illustrates the enormous role that journalism has played in not merely recording this nation's history but also in actively shaping it. Mightier than the Sword offers students and professors a highly readable and accessible alternative to journalism history textbooks. Instead of trying to document every detail in the development of US media through dry dull lists of names dates and headlines this book focuses on sixteen discrete episodes that illustrate a point that is much larger than the sum of their parts: media have played and continue to play an enormous role in shaping this nation. The fourth edition features an entirely new chapter on the way US media have championed various gay and lesbian rights initiatives from the 2003 Lawrence vs. Texas sodomy case through the June 2013 Supreme Court decision striking down DOMA (the Defense of Marriage Act). Balancing criticism and celebration of news media and exploring both print and electronic platforms Mightier than the Sword provides students with a sense of the power and responsibility inherent in the institution of journalism. | Mightier than the Sword How the News Media Have Shaped American History

The Silent Selkie A Storybook to Support Children and Young People Who Have Experienced Trauma

The Silent Selkie describes a character who is unable to communicate in words and whose only way of communicating is through the weather which leads to disastrous consequences not only for the Selkie but also for everyone around her. But behind her golden scales the Selkie hides a secret wound that even she is unaware of and it is only when the Selkie’s skin becomes uncovered by the force of the sea that she remembers the terrible story of what caused her hurt long ago. Only then can the Selkie come to terms with her wound and begin a journey of healing that will bring her face-to-face with what she has needed all along. Beautifully illustrated and sensitively written The Silent Selkie deals with the effects of trauma on a young person – including hypersensitivity and emotional reactivity. The story uses the metaphor of trauma as a ‘hidden wound’ which in reality is an emotional or psychological pain that needs both acknowledgement and expression within the context of a safe supportive environment in which to begin to heal. This colourful storybook: Helps adults provide a safe environment for children to use non-verbal expression to communicate experiences that may be difficult to talk about. Uses creative metaphors and symbols to offer children a supportive way to communicate whilst maintaining a safe distance from the source of their emotional pain. Inspires and empowers children to begin their journey of healing. The Silent Selkie encourages young people who may have adverse childhood experiences or trauma to develop greater understanding of how this can affect them and is ideal reading for those working with vulnerable children and young people seeking to use the expressive arts to develop greater emotional literacy in children with a background of trauma. For effective use this book should be purchased alongside the guidebook.
