Nordic Whiteness and Migration to the USA A Historical Exploration of Identity

Nordic Whiteness and Migration to the USA A Historical Exploration of Identity

This volume explores the complex and contradictory ways in which the cultural scientific and political myth of whiteness has influenced identities self-perceptions and the process of integration of Nordic immigrants into multicultural and racially segregated American society in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In deploying central insights from whiteness studies postcolonial feminist and intersectionality theories it shows that Nordic immigrants - Danes Swedes Finns Norwegians and Sámi - contributed to and challenged American racism and white identity. A diverse group of immigrants they could proclaim themselves ‘hyper-white’ and ‘better citizens than anybody else’ including Anglo-Saxons thus taking for granted the racial bias of American citizenship and ownership rights yet there were also various unexpected intersections of whiteness with ethnicity regional belonging gender sexuality and political views. ‘Nordic whiteness’ then was not a monolithic notion in the USA and could be challenged by other identities which could even turn white Nordic immigrants into marginalised figures. A fascinating study of whiteness and identity among white migrants in the USA Nordic Whiteness will appeal to scholars of sociology history and anthropology with interests in Scandinavian studies migration and diaspora studies and American studies. | Nordic Whiteness and Migration to the USA A Historical Exploration of Identity

Neoliberalism Nordic Welfare States and Social Work Current and Future Challenges

Neoliberalism Nordic Welfare States and Social Work Current and Future Challenges

How have three decades of neoliberalism affected the Nordic welfare states as well as the organisation education and practices of social work in those countries? During recent decades the welfare states of Denmark Finland Norway and Sweden have gone through dramatic changes infl uenced by the political triumph of neoliberalism. This has led to both the electoral success of extreme right and mainstream neoliberal parties and to the neoliberal ideological transformations of social democratic parties. The neoliberal doctrine of making governance cheaper has thus been made the focus of governance and has led to increased marginalisation and social problems. This is the first book to comparatively explore the role of neoliberal reforms on social work and social policy across the Nordic welfare states. The richly theoretical and empirical chapters explore and illustrate the consequences of the dominance of neoliberal policies and provide an analysis of the effects of globalisation glocalisation welfare nationalism symbolic violence and forced migration. The book provides valuable insights into the shortcomings of retreating welfare states in a time of increasing glocal social problems. Neoliberalism Nordic Welfare States and Social Work should be considered essential reading for critical social work education. Students scholars educators and researchers of Nordic countries and beyond have much to learn from this book. | Neoliberalism Nordic Welfare States and Social Work Current and Future Challenges

Entropy Randomization in Machine Learning

Entropy Randomization in Machine Learning

Entropy Randomization in Machine Learning presents a new approach to machine learning—entropy randomization—to obtain optimal solutions under uncertainty (uncertain data and models of the objects under study). Randomized machine-learning procedures involve models with random parameters and maximum entropy estimates of the probability density functions of the model parameters under balance conditions with measured data. Optimality conditions are derived in the form of nonlinear equations with integral components. A new numerical random search method is developed for solving these equations in a probabilistic sense. Along with the theoretical foundations of randomized machine learning Entropy Randomization in Machine Learning considers several applications to binary classification modelling the dynamics of the Earth’s population predicting seasonal electric load fluctuations of power supply systems and forecasting the thermokarst lakes area in Western Siberia. Features • A systematic presentation of the randomized machine-learning problem: from data processing through structuring randomized models and algorithmic procedure to the solution of applications-relevant problems in different fields • Provides new numerical methods for random global optimization and computation of multidimensional integrals • A universal algorithm for randomized machine learning This book will appeal to undergraduates and postgraduates specializing in artificial intelligence and machine learning researchers and engineers involved in the development of applied machine learning systems and researchers of forecasting problems in various fields.

Cost-Sensitive Machine Learning

Cost-Sensitive Machine Learning

In machine learning applications practitioners must take into account the cost associated with the algorithm. These costs include: Cost of acquiring training dataCost of data annotation/labeling and cleaningComputational cost for model fitting validation and testingCost of collecting features/attributes for test dataCost of user feedback collectionCost of incorrect prediction/classificationCost-Sensitive Machine Learning is one of the first books to provide an overview of the current research efforts and problems in this area. It discusses real-world applications that incorporate the cost of learning into the modeling process. The first part of the book presents the theoretical underpinnings of cost-sensitive machine learning. It describes well-established machine learning approaches for reducing data acquisition costs during training as well as approaches for reducing costs when systems must make predictions for new samples. The second part covers real-world applications that effectively trade off different types of costs. These applications not only use traditional machine learning approaches but they also incorporate cutting-edge research that advances beyond the constraining assumptions by analyzing the application needs from first principles. Spurring further research on several open problems this volume highlights the often implicit assumptions in machine learning techniques that were not fully understood in the past. The book also illustrates the commercial importance of cost-sensitive machine learning through its coverage of the rapid application developments made by leading companies and academic research labs.

The Nordic Economic Social and Political Model Challenges in the 21st Century

The Nordic Economic Social and Political Model Challenges in the 21st Century

The Nordic Model is the 20th-century Scandinavian recipe for combining stable democracies individual freedom economic growth and comprehensive systems for social security. But what happens when Sweden and Finland – two countries topping global indexes for competitiveness productivity growth quality of life prosperity and equality – start doubting themselves and their future? Is the Nordic Model at a crossroads? Historically consensus continuity social cohesion and broad social trust have been hailed as key components for the success and for the self-images of Sweden and Finland. In the contemporary however political debates in both countries are increasingly focused on risks threats and worry. Social disintegration political polarization geopolitical anxieties and threat of terrorism are often dominant themes. This book focuses on what appears to be a paradox: countries with low income differences high faith in social institutions and relatively high cultural homogeneity becoming fixated on the fear of polarization disintegration and diminished social trust. Unpacking the presentist discourse of worry and a sense of interregnum at the face of geopolitical tensions digitalization and globalization as well as challenges to democracy the chapters take steps back in time and explore the current conjecture through the eyes of historians and social scientists addressing key aspects of and challenges to both the contemporary and future Nordic Model. In addition the functioning and efficacy of the participatory democracy and current protocols of decision-making are debated. This work is essential reading for students and scholars of the welfare state social reforms and populism as well as Nordic and Scandinavian studies.
