The Concept of Monument in Achaemenid Empire

The Concept of Monument in Achaemenid Empire

The aim of this book is to explore the significance of the concept of ‘monument’ in the context of the Achaemenid Empire (550-330 BC) with particular reference to the Royal Ensemble of Persepolis founded by Darius I and built together with his son Xerxes. While Persepolis was built as an ‘intentional monument’ it had already become an ‘historic monument’ during the Achaemenid period. It maintained its symbolic significance in the following centuries even after its destruction by Alexander of Macedonia in 330 BC. The purpose of building Persepolis was to establish a symbol and a common reference for the peoples of the Empire with the Achaemenid Dynasty transmitting significant messages and values such as peace stability grandeur and praise for the dynastic figure of the king as the protector of values and fighting falsehood. While previous research on Achaemenid heritage has mainly been on archaeological and art-historical aspects of Persepolis the present work focuses on the architecture and design of Persepolis. It is supported by studies in the fields of archaeology history and art history as well as by direct survey of the site. The morphological analysis of Persepolis including the study of the proportions of the elevations and the verification of a planning grid for the layout of the entire ensemble demonstrate the univocal will by Darius to plan Persepolis following a precise initial scheme. The study shows how the inscriptions bas-reliefs and the innovative architectural language together express the symbolism values and political messages of the Achaemenid Dynasty exhibiting influence from different lands in a new architectural language and in the plan of the entire site. | The Concept of Monument in Achaemenid Empire

Molluscan Communities of the Florida Keys and Adjacent Areas Their Ecology and Biodiversity

Molluscan Communities of the Florida Keys and Adjacent Areas Their Ecology and Biodiversity

Molluscan Communities of the Florida Keys and Adjacent Areas: Their Ecology and Biodiversity is the first comprehensive overview of the ecology and biodiversity of the phylum Mollusca in the area of Florida extending from the Dry Tortugas and Ten Thousand Islands in the west to Palm Beach in the east. The book provides detailed analyses of molluscan faunas found in 20 different ecosystems emphasizing the marine environments of the Florida Keys archipelago and its extensive coral reef tracts. Full-page color illustrations portray living animals unique Keys environments underwater ecosystems and satellite images. More than 1 200 species of macromollusks—in 86 gastropod families and 54 bivalve families—are recorded from the study area with color plates illustrating over 550 of the region’s most ecologically important species. For the first time in any book on the malacology of the Florida Keys area the 20 marine ecosystems and their associated molluscan assemblages are arranged by the CMECS (Coastal Marine Ecological Classification Standard) system. This system emphasizes the hierarchical relationships determined by substrate type bathymetry and water chemistry. Along with complete species lists for every molluscan assemblage this handy guide introduces ten newly-discovered gastropods including new species in the families Muricidae Buccinidae Nassariidae Naticidae Turritellidae and Olividae. Two new bivalves in the families Pectinidae and Arcidae are also described in a special systematic appendix. This richly illustrated book is written for the professional scientific audience interested in mollusks marine ecology evolution and taxonomy as well as malacologists naturalists and shell collectors. It is also an ideal synoptic field guide showing where individual species of mollusks can be found and within which ecosystems they occur. | Molluscan Communities of the Florida Keys and Adjacent Areas Their Ecology and Biodiversity

Transforming Mental Healthcare Applying Performance Improvement Methods to Mental Healthcare

Transforming Mental Healthcare Applying Performance Improvement Methods to Mental Healthcare

One in five U. S. adults experiences a mental illness within a given year. With more than 550 000 people working to support this underserved community the mental healthcare system has grappled with inadequacies and shortcomings in safety quality and care delivery. There is a wide range of problems from access-to-care issues and errors to complications stemming from poor care. Our country is also on an unsustainable path as our healthcare expenditure keeps growing. To add to all of this we are facing a rampant epidemic of burnout among healthcare workers. Modern advancements introduced with many promises—such as electronic medical records newer medications or advanced treatments—have created unique challenges when ushered into a highly regulated healthcare system. What does it take to provide patients with everything they need—the right quality of care at the right time and at the right cost—to keep them healthy? Which process steps add value? Which steps are wasteful? A widely accepted fact is that a conservative 30-50% of every step in the mental healthcare process does not help patients feel better or stay better. When considering delays in care workarounds excessive documentation and an overuse of auditing the care system has moved highly skilled clinicians away from providing value as administrative tasks continue to encroach on their time. There is a clear need to rethink and redesign the system of care. This book is a primer for understanding the current state of the mental health system and the performance improvement skills and leadership acumen needed to address existing challenges. Sheppard Pratt the award-winning leading institution for mental healthcare in America provided the focus on mental healthcare and became the laboratory for this body of work over the course of eight years. It hired a seasoned systems thinker with improvement expertise to work with mental health professionals and solve some of their most complex and chronic problems. The book is a result of the collaboration between a practicing psychiatrist in a leadership role and the systems engineer. Working together they demonstrate how to think about redesigning care and redefining the nature of work to enhance value for both the people served and the healthcare workforce. They crafted a multi-pronged approach towards culture change at Sheppard Pratt including implementing a course on Learning to Improve which introduced staff to a performance improvement methodology. There are several vignettes interwoven throughout the book that describe the complexities and constraints of the system. Solving some of these challenges creates a new paradigm of work while minimizing waste and enhancing value. | Transforming Mental Healthcare Applying Performance Improvement Methods to Mental Healthcare
