Hoshin Kanri in Higher Education A Guide to Strategy Development Deployment and Management

Hoshin Kanri in Higher Education A Guide to Strategy Development Deployment and Management

Strategy the link between mission and operational plans to improve an institution’s performance is a critical element to the future success of higher education (HE). Hoshin Kanri (HK) the application of Lean principles and practices to strategy development deployment and management is a systematic and effective approach to support institutional success particularly when competition is high. Surprisingly despite its known effectiveness and advantages over other approaches to strategy development deployment and management the application of HK in HE is limited. This book promotes greater awareness appreciation and application of HK at HE institutions. The book is divided into four sections: The first section (Introduction to Hoshin Kanri) provides a general overview of HK and its potential contributions when used in HE settings The second section (Case Studies) provides several examples where aspects of HK were introduced at HE institutions. These case studies which vary in scope use of HK practices and tools and identified benefits offer insights both for helping senior leaders recognize the value of HK (and adopt the HK process) and for on-the-ground experiences using HK tools and techniques – including barriers and challenges – during implementation The third section (Expanding the Application of Hoshin Kanri in Higher Education) includes several chapters on how to begin an HE institution’s HK journey. The chapters include practical steps for gaining support for and implementing HK strategy development deployment and management tailored for HE institutions across both typical and novel applications of HK The fourth and final section (Implications for Practice and Research) presents a high-level summary of the current state of HK in HE and offers thoughts and recommendations on the future state directions for practice research opportunities and challenges for HK in HE The book underscores the key benefits HK can offer HE institutions. With its Lean roots of continuous improvement and respect for people HK offers HE institutions an effective and sustainable approach to strategy development deployment and management. HK can be used institution-wide or at any level or area within an institution. While the local application of HK won’t achieve the full benefits possible through institution-wide adoption it offers a marked improvement over other strategy approaches that fail to respect people and leverage their knowledge expertise and insights to apply continuous improvement to move their office department or function forward. | Hoshin Kanri in Higher Education A Guide to Strategy Development Deployment and Management

The Making of a Modern Indian Artist-Craftsman Devi Prasad

The Making of a Modern Indian Artist-Craftsman Devi Prasad

The Making of the Modern Indian Artist-Craftsman is intended to be a biographical and critical insight into the work of the potter painter and photographer Devi Prasad. Apart from the making of his personal history and his times it leads us to why the act of making (art) itself takes on such a fundamental philosophical significance in his life. This the author explains derives directly from his absorption of Gandhi’s philosophy that looked at the act of making or doing as an ethical ideal and further back to the impact of the Arts and Crafts Movement on the ideology of ‘Swadeshi’ and on the milieu of Santiniketan. This book examines his art along with his role in political activism which although garnered on Indian soil made him crisscross national borders and assume an important role in the international arena of war resistance. Devi Prasad graduated from Tagore’s Santiniketan in 1944 when he joined the Hindustani Talimi Sangh (which promulgated Nayee Taleem) at Gandhi’s ashram Sevagram as Art ‘Teacher’. His political consciousness saw him participate actively in the Quit India Movement in 1942 in Vinoba Bhave’s Bhoodan and later from 1962 onward as Secretary General (later Chairman) of the War Resisters’ International the oldest world pacifist organisation based in London. From there he was able to extend his Gandhian values internationally. All of this while continuing with his life as a prolific artist. Rather than view them as separate worlds or professions Devi harmonises them within an ethical and conscionable whole. He has written widely on the inextricable link between peace and creativity on child /basic education Gandhi and Tagore on politics and art in English Hindi and Bangla. In 2007 he was awarded the Lalit Kala Akademi Ratna and in 2008 the Desikottama by Visva Bharati University Santiniketan. | The Making of a Modern Indian Artist-Craftsman Devi Prasad

Labyrinth and Piano Key Weirs III Proceedings of the 3rd International Workshop on Labyrinth and Piano Key Weirs (PKW 2017) February 22-24

Since the first implementation by Electricité de France on the Goulours dam (France) in 2006 the Piano Key Weir has become a more and more applied solution to increase the discharge capacity of existing spillways. In parallel several new large dam projects have been built with such a flood control structure usually in combination with gates. Today more than 25 Piano Key Weirs are in operation or under construction all over the world. More than 15 years of research and development have enabled detailed investigations of the hydraulic and structural behaviour of the Piano Key Weir complex structure and have provided more and more accurate design equations. Following the proceedings of the first two workshops held in Liege (Belgium – 2011) and Paris (France – 2013) Labyrinth and Piano Key Weirs III collects the contributions presented by people with varied background from researchers to practitioners at the 3rd International Workshop on Labyrinth and Piano Key Weirs - PKW 2017 (22-24 February 2017 Qui Nhon Vietnam). The papers reviewed and accepted by an International Scientific Committee summarize the current state-of-the-art on Piano Key Weirs from a theoretical to a practical point of view and present most of the main projects in operation or under construction. Labyrinth and Piano Key Weirs III is thus a reference for students practitioners and researchers interested in Dams Engineering. | Labyrinth and Piano Key Weirs III Proceedings of the 3rd International Workshop on Labyrinth and Piano Key Weirs (PKW 2017) February 22-24

A Vast Bundle of Opportunities An Exploration of Creativity in Personal Life and Community

A Vast Bundle of Opportunities An Exploration of Creativity in Personal Life and Community

The conventional view of religion is that the basic truths were settled long ago that all we have to do is to accept them and behave accordingly. Essentially then there is no room for originality. To be religious we have to be followers adherents to be convinced addicted to be in a position to say: we are right you are wrong. In A Vast Bundle of Opportunities originally published in 1975 Kenneth Barnes maintains that this is a sterile condition of mind. Religion is not a separate kind of experience; it includes our whole selves and all that we do. It follows that if art and science can be creative and originative so also must religion be if it is real. If it is the Christian religion we are thinking of then to try to ‘imitate’ Jesus is to kill him stone dead. To make him an ideal is to put him away. But to respond to him is to come alive as creators and originators. The writer as the founder of an unusual kind of boarding school – Wennington School Wetherby – knows what it is like to live in the midst of incessant enterprising activity; in his own life he knows what it feels like to be a scientist an artist a craftsman. He asks if there are ways we can deliberately choose by which we can become originators. He takes the philosophy of John Macmurrray to show what freedom could mean to us and the more recent writings of Arthur Koestler and Edouard de Bono to suggest that the obvious development of creativeness in science can be encouraged in the total approach to life and human problems. Life then becomes an experience of endless discovery a continual opening up of possibilities. | A Vast Bundle of Opportunities An Exploration of Creativity in Personal Life and Community
