Platinotype Making Photographs in Platinum and Palladium with the Contemporary Printing-out Process

Platinotype Making Photographs in Platinum and Palladium with the Contemporary Printing-out Process

Platinotype: Making Photographs in Platinum and Palladium with the Contemporary Printing-out Process describes the mechanisms and chemistry of platinum/palladium printing in safe and practical ways. Clearly presented formulae allow the printer to work with platinum palladium or varying combinations of both. The printed-out image appears fully during exposure and only requires simple and safe steps for clearing to a stable archival state. The authors explain what makes the image how all necessary components are prepared and used and the kind of paper and negative needed to make prints. More than just a technical manual the book underscores the authors' belief that printing is a creative scientific and philosophic way of working. The book presents an outstanding collection of prints by over 40 artists all made with this printing-out process. The artists' notes and comments offer insights into their methods and thinking and a large number of full-page reproductions serve as a valuable reference for the aspiring printer. The book includes: A list of supplies and equipment A detailed chemical glossary A Quick-start section in the Preface Summary sheets and workflows for each step of the process Instructions for making traditional negatives with Pyro PMK and digital negatives Explanation of the chemistry and dynamics of paper and how to use buffered papers Instructions for controlling hydration processes and humidity Instructions for preparing each chemical solution needed for the process Discussion about the aesthetics of the platinum/palladium print Explanation of the relationships between light image and expression A detailed troubleshooting list Recommendations from conservators about processing handling and conservation Contemporary artists using the printing-out platinum/palladium process. Will Sustainability Fly? Aviation Fuel Options in a Low-Carbon World

Will Sustainability Fly? Aviation Fuel Options in a Low-Carbon World

While international negotiations to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have been less than satisfactory there is a presumption that a significant level of multi-lateral commitment will be realized at some point. International air and marine travel have been left to one side in past talks because the pursuit of agreement proceeds on the basis of commitment by sovereign nations and the effects of these specific commercial activities are by their nature difficult to corral and assign to specific national jurisdictions. However air travel is increasing and unless something is done emissions from this segment of our world economy will form a progressively larger percentage of the total especially as emissions fall in other activities. This book focuses on fuel. The aim is to provide background in technical and policy terms from the broadest reliable sources of information available for the necessary discourse on society's reaction to the evolving aviation emissions profile. It considers what policy has been why and how commercial air travel is committed to its current liquid fuel how that fuel can be made without using fossil-source materials and the barriers to change. It also advances some elements of policy remedies that make sense in providing an environmentally and economically sound way forward in a context that comprehends a more complete vision of sustainability than 'renewable fuels' traditionally have. The goal of Will Sustainability Fly? is to broaden and contextualize the knowledge resource available to academics policy makers air industry leaders and stakeholders and interested members of the public. | Will Sustainability Fly? Managing State Social Work Front-Line Management and the Labour Process Perspective

Managing State Social Work Front-Line Management and the Labour Process Perspective

Published in 1998. The industrial model of the labour process developed by Braverman was applied to social work in the radical social work literature. The book engages in a more critical examination of the application of the labour process perspective to social work with particular reference to front-line management in a local authority context. It begins with a review of the labour process literature which demonstrates the extent to which the independence of Braverman’s model on scientific management was undermined in the post-Braverman debate. The radical texts' orthodox Bravermanian approach to the social work labour process is considered. In those texts the social work labour process is represented as having moved towards an industrial model which steadily encroached on the autonomy of front-line field social workers through managers’ wresting of control over their work. The book advances an alternative model of the social work labour process which takes account of the distinctive features of social work as a state-mediated bureau-professional labour process. Findings from a small-scale case study of a social services department are presented. Data from the study are used to test the bureau-professional model of the social work labour process against the orthodox Bravermanian model. Developments in the social services department’s organizational structure are set out and the position of front-line managers is considered through an exploration of their identifications and commitments in relation to management and trade unionism. The data from their accounts support the bureau-professional model of the labour process and the position of front-line managers emerges as more ambiguous than the radical social work literature indicated. Front-line managers did not share global goals with senior management nor were their interests merged straightforwardly with those of social workers. | Managing State Social Work Front-Line Management and the Labour Process Perspective

Contesting ‘Race’ and Sport Shaming the Colour Line

Contesting ‘Race’ and Sport Shaming the Colour Line

In the decade since Kevin Hylton’s seminal book ‘Race’ and Sport: Critical Race Theory was published racialised issues have remained at the forefront of sport and leisure studies. In this important new book Hylton draws on original research in contemporary contexts from sport coaching to cyberspace to show once again that Critical Race Theory is an insightful and productive tool for interrogating problematic social phenomena. Inspired by W. E. B. Du Bois’ statement that the problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the colour line this book sheds a critical light on the way sport perpetuates racism while identifying opportunities to challenge its insidious presence. Exploring and explaining the ways in which notions of ‘race’ are expressed and contested at individual institutional and societal levels it addresses key topics such as whiteness diversity colourblindness unconscious bias identity leadership humour and discourse to investigate how language can be used as a device for resistance against racism in sport. Contesting ‘Race’ and Sport: Shaming the Colour Line is vital reading for all sport studies students academics and those with an interest in race ethnicity and society.
