Why It's OK to Love Bad Movies

Why It's OK to Love Bad Movies

Most people are too busy to keep up with all the good movies they’d like to see so why should anyone spend their precious time watching the bad ones? In Why It’s OK to Love Bad Movies philosopher and cinematic bottom feeder Matthew Strohl enthusiastically defends a fondness for disreputable films. Combining philosophy of art with film criticism Strohl flips conventional notions of good and bad on their heads and makes the case that the ultimate value of a work of art lies in what it can add to our lives. By this measure some of the worst movies ever made are also among the best. Through detailed discussions of films such as Troll 2 The Room Batman & Robin Twilight Ninja III: The Domination and a significant portion of Nicolas Cage’s filmography Strohl argues that so-called bad movies are the ones that break the rules of the art form without the aura of artistic seriousness that surrounds the avant-garde. These movies may not win any awards but they offer rich opportunities for creative engagement and enable the formation of lively fan communities and they can be a key ingredient in a fulfilling aesthetic life. Key Features: Written in a humorous approachable style appealing to readers with no background in philosophy. Elaborates the rewards of loving bad movies such as forming unlikely social bonds and developing refinement without narrowness. Discusses a wide range of beloved bad movies including Plan 9 from Outer Space The Core Battlefield Earth and Freddy Got Fingered. Contains the most extensive discussion of Nicolas Cage ever included in a philosophy book. | Why It's OK to Love Bad Movies

Chiral Drugs

Chiral Drugs

This title was first published in 2001: In the early twentieth century the relevance of chirality to the pharmaceutical industry was established by the fact that one enantiomer of hyoscyamine possessed greater pharmacological activity than the other. Today most new drugs and those under development consist of a single optically active isomer and chirality is also becoming an issue for the agrochemical and other industries. Regulatory agencies throughout the world are currently reviewing the importance of chirality with regard to pharmaceutical and agrochemical products. New guidelines from such agencies have been key drivers for the focus on single enantiomer products in these industries. These scientific and regulatory developments have created the need for a guide for workers in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries seeking information on chiral molecules processes and commercially available chiral chemicals. Chiral Drugs is a comprehensive listing of over 2500 chiral drugs classified by therapeutic class and including structures and physical properties for each entry in the listing. Its companion volume Chiral Intermediates presents the same detailed information for over 4700 commercially available chiral chemicals. The 'Chiral Pool' of readily available relatively inexpensive chiral compounds has been expanding at a rapid rate as more and more products are produced in large quantities at economical prices. New developments in various technologies for isolating preparing and purifying chiral materials have greatly increased the opportunities for utilizing optically pure compounds in commercial applications. Novel techniques for classical resolution new methodologies for developing selective enzymes for biocatalysis advances in the application of microorganisms for chemical production and continued progress in the area of asymmetric synthesis have all contributed to the growth of this field. Part One of each book contains four chapters which provide an introduction to topics relevant to the field of chiral chemistry and includes a brief overview of chirality a short discussion on the current market drivers in the area of chiral chemistry and a basic presentation of the various sources and methods for obtaining chiral compounds. Part Two presents entries for over 2500 chiral drugs classified by therapeutic class. For each main entry the chemical name and a list of trade names and synonyms is provided; the CAS Registry Number the European Inventory of Existing Commercial Chemical Substances (EINECS) number and the Merck Index (12th edition) number are given when available. The physical properties including specific rotation of each compound are described and indicated applications are presented. The structure of nearly every compound is provided and the manufacturers and suppliers of the compounds are also given. Indexes including a master index of names and synonyms and an index of custom manufacturing services for production of chiral compounds are appended. Chiral Drugs provides an introduction to the types of sources and methods currently in use for obtaining chiral molecules and is an invaluable resource for researchers in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors as well as to those working in the basic biochemical sciences. Chiral Intermediates provides an introduction to the types of sources and methods currently in use for obtaining chiral molecules and is an invaluable resource for information on available chiral molecules. Chiral Intermediates and Chiral Drugs are the most comprehensive and detailed guides to chiral compounds available.

Body Composition Health and Performance in Exercise and Sport

Body Composition Health and Performance in Exercise and Sport

Interest in the relationships between body structure and function in physical activity has persisted for centuries. Body Composition: Health and Performance in Exercise and Sport advances understanding beyond simple descriptions of body physique and composition of athletes and fills gaps in our understanding of the important role of muscle fat and bone in facilitating physical performance and health in sports and physically demanding occupations. lt addresses basic practical and applied topics in body composition performance and health with comprehensive reviews organized in four logical parts: Body Composition Assessment; Physical Activity and Body Composition; Body Composition in Sports and Occupations; and Moderating Factors. This book integrates state-of-the-art knowledge by international experts in the field and produces an evidence-based practical guide for a balanced understanding of the role and use of body composition assessment in physical performance and health for youth and adults. It also provides a needed link between the practice of body composition assessment and its application by members of public health advisory committees that develop national guidelines for diet physical activity and health. This book is suitable for students and professionals in sports nutrition exercise science kinesiology and athletic training. Sport administrators and policy-makers for international and national sport federations and organizations and national intercollegiate and scholastic federations would also benefit from this book. | Body Composition Health and Performance in Exercise and Sport

Lords and Towns in Medieval Europe The European Historic Towns Atlas Project

Lords and Towns in Medieval Europe The European Historic Towns Atlas Project

This volume is based on possibly the biggest single Europe-wide project in urban history. In 1955 the International Commission for the History of Towns established the European historic towns atlas project in accordance with a common scheme in order to encourage comparative urban studies. Although advances in urban archaeology since the 1960s have highlighted the problematic relationship between the oldest extant town plan and the actual origins of a town the large-scale cadastral maps as they have been made available by the European historic towns atlas project are still necessary if we want to understand the evolution of the physical form of our towns. By 2014 the project consisted of over 500 individual publications from over 18 different countries across Europe. Each atlas comprises at least a core-map at the scale of 1:2500 analytical maps and an explanatory text. The time has come to use this enormous database that has been compiled over the last 40 years. This volume itself based on a conference related to this topic that was held in the Royal Irish Academy in Dublin in 2006 takes up this challenge. The focus of the volume is on the question of how seigneurial power influenced the creation of towns in medieval Europe and of how this process in turn influenced urban form. Part I of the volume addresses two major issues: the history of the use of town plans in urban research and the methodological challenges of comparative urban history. Parts II and III constitute the core of the book focusing on the dynamic relationship between lordship and town planning in the core area of medieval Europe and on the periphery. In Part IV the symbolic meaning of town plans for medieval people is discussed. Part V consists of critical contributions by an archaeologist an art historian and an historical geographer. By presenting case studies by leading researchers from different European countries this volume combines findings that were hitherto not available in English | Lords and Towns in Medieval Europe The European Historic Towns Atlas Project
