Risks of Artificial Intelligence

Risks of Artificial Intelligence

If the intelligence of artificial systems were to surpass that of humans humanity would face significant risks. The time has come to consider these issues and this consideration must include progress in artificial intelligence (AI) as much as insights from AI theory. Featuring contributions from leading experts and thinkers in artificial intelligence Risks of Artificial Intelligence is the first volume of collected chapters dedicated to examining the risks of AI. The book evaluates predictions of the future of AI proposes ways to ensure that AI systems will be beneficial to humans and then critically evaluates such proposals. The book covers the latest research on the risks and future impacts of AI. It starts with an introduction to the problem of risk and the future of artificial intelligence followed by a discussion (Armstrong/Sokala/ÓhÉigeartaigh) on how predictions of its future have fared to date. Omohundro makes the point that even an innocuous artificial agent can easily turn into a serious threat for humans. T. Goertzel explains how to succeed in the design of artificial agents. But will these be a threat for humanity or a useful tool? Ways to assure beneficial outcomes through ‘machine ethics’ and ‘utility functions’ are discussed by Brundage and Yampolskiy. B. Goertzel and Potapov/Rodionov propose ‘learning’ and ‘empathy’ as paths towards safer AI while Kornai explains how the impact of AI may be bounded. Sandberg explains the implications of human-like AI via the technique of brain emulation. Dewey discusses strategies to deal with the ‘fast takeoff’ of artificial intelligence and finally Bishop explains why there is no need to worry because computers will remain in a state of ‘artificial stupidity’. Sharing insights from leading thinkers in artificial intelligence this book provides you with an expert-level perspective of what is on the horizon for AI whether it will be a threat for humanity and how we might counteract this threat.

The Chrodegang Rules The Rules for the Common Life of the Secular Clergy from the Eighth and Ninth Centuries. Critical Texts with Translatio

The Chrodegang Rules The Rules for the Common Life of the Secular Clergy from the Eighth and Ninth Centuries. Critical Texts with Translatio

Since its earliest days the Christian Church sought to draw up rules by which its members could live together in religious communities. Whilst those of Augustine (c. 400 AD) and Benedict (c. 530 AD) provided detailed guidance for monastic life it took another two centuries for equivalent rules for secular clergy to become accepted on a wide scale. The earliest surviving set of comprehensive rules for canons are those written in the mid-eighth century by St Chrodegang (c. 712-766) Bishop of Metz. Writing initially for secular clergy at Metz Cathedral this work shows how Chrodegang's rule borrowed much from the Benedictine tradition dealing with many of the same concerns such as the housing feeding and disciplining of members of the community and the daily routine of the divine offices. At a time when there was no consensus on how clergy should live - whether they should marry or were eligible to own property - Chrodegang's rule provided clear guidance on such issues and inspired reformers across Europe to consider how clergy lived and interacted with wider society. Although his work was superseded within a generation by the Rule of Aachen Chrodegang succeeded in setting the agenda for subsequent rules for canons and as such his rule deserves to be given more weight by Church historians than has hitherto been the case. Providing the Latin texts and English translations of the three surviving versions of Chrodegang's rule (Regula Originalis Chrodegangi Institutio Canonicorum Regula Longior Canonicorum) this volume provides an invaluable resource to scholars of medieval Christian communities. Substantial introductions to each text provide historical context and bibliographic details allowing them to be understood in a much fuller way than has hitherto been possible. | The Chrodegang Rules The Rules for the Common Life of the Secular Clergy from the Eighth and Ninth Centuries. Fundamentals of Internet of Things

Fundamentals of Internet of Things

The Internet of Things (IoT) networks have revolutionized the world and have innumerable real-time applications on automation. A few examples include driverless cars remote monitoring of the elderly remote order of tea or coffee of your choice from a vending machine and home/industrial automation amongst others. Fundamentals of Internet of Things build the foundations of IoT networks by leveraging the relevant concepts from signal processing communications net-works and machine learning. The book covers two fundamental components of IoT networks namely the Internet and Things. In particular the book focuses on networking concepts protocols clustering data fusion localization energy harvesting control optimization data analytics fog computing privacy and security including elliptic curve cryptography and blockchain technology. Most of the existing books are theoretical and without many mathematical details and examples. In addition some essential topics of the IoT networks are also missing in the existing books. Features: • The book covers cutting-edge research topics• Provides mathematical understanding of the topics in addition to relevant theory and insights• Includes illustrations with hand-solved numerical examples for visualization of the theory and testing of understanding• Lucid and crisp explanation to lessen the study time of the reader The book is a complete package of the fundamentals of IoT networks and is suitable for graduate-level students and researchers who want to dive into the world of IoT networks.

The Temporalities of Waste Out of Sight Out of Time

The Temporalities of Waste Out of Sight Out of Time

This book investigates the complex and unpredictable temporalities of waste. Reflecting on waste in the context of sustainability materiality social practices subjectivity and environmental challenges the book covers a wide range of settings from the municipal garbage crisis in Beirut to food rescue campaigns in Hong Kong and the toxic by-products of computer chip production in Silicon Valley. Waste is one of the most pressing issues of the day central to environmental challenges and the development of healthier and more sustainable futures. The emergence of the new field of discard studies in addition to expanding research across other disciplines within the social sciences is testament to the centrality of waste as a crucial social material and cultural problem and to the need for multi- and transdisciplinary approaches like those provided in this volume. This edited collection seeks to develop a framework that understands the material properties of different kinds of waste not as fixed stable or singular but asdynamic relational and often invisible. It brings together new and cutting-edge research on the temporalities of waste by a diverse range of international authors. Collectively this research presents a persuasive argument about the need to give more credence to the capacities of waste to provoke us in materially and temporally complex ways especially those substances that complicate our understandings of life as bounded duration. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of the environmental humanities cultural studies anthropology and human geography. | The Temporalities of Waste Out of Sight Out of Time

Augustine and Liberal Education

Augustine and Liberal Education

This title was first published in 2000: Augustine of Hippo (354-430 CE) - Bishop theologian philosopher and rhetorician - has left a rich legacy for reflection upon relationships between Christianity and culture between Christian catechesis and liberal education and between faith and reason. Contemporary educational institutions have begun to explore their roots digging into their intellectual traditions for the resources for renewal of liberal education. Augustine and Liberal Education sheds light on liberal education past and present from an Augustinian point of view. Ranging from historical investigations of particular themes and issues in the thought of Saint Augustine to reflections on the role of tradition and community and the challenges and opportunities facing universities in the next century the contributors return to the sources of traditional reflection whilst exploring contemporary issues of education and 'the good life'. Essays on Augustinian inquiry in medieval and modern eras address critical questions on the role of rhetoric reading and authority in education on the social context of learning and on the relationship between liberal education and properly Christian catechesis. Contemporary questions on liberal education from philosophical political theological and ethical perspectives are then explored in the essays which move from the past to the present. This book offers a valuable contribution to the growing scholarship on Catholic universities and on Augustine of Hippo engaging in 'Augustinian inquiry' and pointing to possibilities for renewal in liberal education in the twenty-first century.
