Hybrid Anisotropic Materials for Wind Power Turbine Blades

Hybrid Anisotropic Materials for Wind Power Turbine Blades

Based on rapid technological developments in wind power governments and energy corporations are aggressively investing in this natural resource. Illustrating some of the crucial new breakthroughs in structural design and application of wind energy generation machinery Hybrid Anisotropic Materials for Wind Power Turbine Blades explores new automated repeatable production techniques that expand the use of robotics and process controls. These practices are intended to ensure cheaper fabrication of less-defective anisotropic material composites used to manufacture power turbine blades. This book covers new methods of casting or pultrusion that reduce thickness in the glass- and graphite-fiber laminate prepregs used in load-bearing skin blades and web shear spars. This optimized process creates thinner more cost-effective prepegs that still maintain strength and reliability. The book also addresses a wide range of vital technical topics including: Selection of carbon/fiberglass materials Estimation of combination percentages Minimization and optimal placement of shear webs (spars) Advantages of resin such as lower viscosity and curing time Strength and manufacturing criteria for selecting anisotropic materials and turbine blade materials Analysis of dynamic fatigue life and vibration factors in blade design NDE methods to predict and control deflections stiffness and strength Written by a prolific composite materials expert with more than 40 years of research experience this reference is invaluable for a new generation of composite designers graduate students and industry professionals involved in wind power system design. Assessing significant required changes in transmission manufacturing and markets this resource outlines innovative methods to help the U. S. Department of Energy meet its goal of having wind energy account for 20 percent of total generated energy by 2030.

Concrete-Filled Stainless Steel Tubular Columns

Concrete-Filled Stainless Steel Tubular Columns

Concrete-filled stainless steel tubular (CFSST) columns are increasingly used in modern composite construction due to their high strength high ductility high corrosion resistance high durability and aesthetics and ease of maintenance. Thin-walled CFSST columns are characterized by the different strain-hardening behavior of stainless steel in tension and in compression local buckling of stainless steel tubes and concrete confinement. Design codes and numerical models often overestimate or underestimate the ultimate strengths of CFSST columns. This book presents accurate and efficient computational models for the nonlinear inelastic analysis and design of CFSST short and slender columns under axial load and biaxial bending. The effects of different strain-hardening characteristics of stainless steel in tension and in compression progressive local and post-local buckling of stainless steel tubes and concrete confinement are taken into account in the computational models. The numerical models simulate the axial load-strain behavior moment-curvature curves axial load-deflection responses and axial load-moment strength interaction diagrams of CFSST columns. The book describes the mathematical formulations computational procedures and model verifications for circular and rectangular CFSST short and slender columns. The behavior of CFSST columns under various loading conditions is demonstrated by numerous numerical examples. This book is written for practising structural and civil engineers academic researchers and graduate students in civil engineering who are interested in the latest computational techniques and design methods for CFSST columns. | Concrete-Filled Stainless Steel Tubular Columns

Mineral Admixtures in Cement and Concrete

Mineral Admixtures in Cement and Concrete

Written to meet the requirements of engineers working in construction and concrete manufacturing Mineral Admixtures in Cement and Concrete focuses on how to make more workable and durable concrete using mineral admixtures. In particular it covers pulverized fuel ash (PFA) blast furnace slag (BFS) silica fume (SF) rice husk ash (RHA) and metakaolin (MK) as well as some new admixtures currently under investigation. For each mineral admixture the book looks at manufacturing and processing physical characteristics chemical and mineralogical composition quality control and reported experiences. It also examines the provisions of national standards on the admixture’s addition to cement and concrete. References to microstructures and chemistry are kept to a minimum and only discussed to the extent necessary to help readers apply the admixtures in practice. The book also addresses hydration presenting the relevant chemistry and detailing the impact of adding mineral admixtures to concrete. A chapter on strength and durability explains the mechanisms models and standards related to concrete deterioration and how to mitigate carbonation alkali-aggregate reactions chloride attack and corrosion of reinforcement external and internal sulphate attack decalcification and freeze-thaw action. This book is a useful reference for practicing engineers and students alike. It brings together in one volume information on the materials hydration and the strength and durability of cement and concrete with mineral admixtures. Offering a deeper understanding of mineral admixtures it encourages engineers to more effectively use these and other wastes in cement and concrete to support more sustainable growth of the cement and construction industry.

FRP Composites for Reinforced and Prestressed Concrete Structures A Guide to Fundamentals and Design for Repair and Retrofit

FRP Composites for Reinforced and Prestressed Concrete Structures A Guide to Fundamentals and Design for Repair and Retrofit

High strength fibre composites (FRPs) have been used with civil structures since the 1980s mostly in the repair strengthening and retrofitting of concrete structures. This has attracted considerable research and the industry has expanded exponentially in the last decade. Design guidelines have been developed by professional organizations in a number of countries including USA Japan Europe and China but until now designers have had no publication which provides practical guidance or accessible coverage of the fundamentals. This book fills this void. It deals with the fundamentals of composites and basic design principles and provides step-by-step guidelines for design. Its main theme is the repair and retrofit of un-reinforced reinforced and prestressed concrete structures using carbon glass and other high strength fibre composites. In the case of beams the focus is on their strengthening for flexure and shear or their stiffening. The main interest with columns is the improvement of their ductility; and both strengthening and ductility improvement of un-reinforced structures are covered. Methods for evaluating the strengthened structures are presented. Step by step procedures are set out including flow charts for the various structural components and design examples and practice problems are used to illustrate. As infrastructure ages worldwide and its demolition and replacement becomes less of an option the need for repair and retrofit of existing facilities will increase. Besides its audience of design professionals this book suits graduate and advanced undergraduate students. | FRP Composites for Reinforced and Prestressed Concrete Structures A Guide to Fundamentals and Design for Repair and Retrofit
