The Global Muslim Brotherhood in Britain Non-Violent Islamist Extremism and the Battle of Ideas

The Global Muslim Brotherhood in Britain Non-Violent Islamist Extremism and the Battle of Ideas

Since 2011 with the British Government’s counter-radicalisation strategy Prevent non-violent Islamist groups have been considered a security risk for spreading a divisive ideology that can lead to radicalisation and violence. More recently the Government has expressed concerns about their impact on social cohesion entryism and women’s rights. The key protagonists of non-violent Islamist ‘extremism’ allegedly include groups and individuals associated with the Muslim Brotherhood and Jama’at-i-Islami. They have been described as part of the ‘global Muslim Brotherhood’ but do they constitute a singular phenomenon a social movement? This book shows that such groups and individuals do indeed comprise a movement in Britain one dedicated to an Islamic ‘revival’. It shows how they are networked organisationally bonded through ideological and cultural kinship and united in a conflict of values with the British society and state. Using original interviews with prominent revivalist leaders as well as primary sources the book also shows how the movement is not so much ‘Islamist’ in aspiring for an Islamic state but concerned with institutionalising an Islamic worldview and moral framework throughout society. The conflict between the Government and the global Muslim Brotherhood is apparent in a number of different fields including education governance law and counterterrorism. But this does not simply concern the direction of Government policy or the control of state institutions. It most fundamentally concerns the symbolic authority to legitimise a way of seeing thinking and living. By assessing this multifaceted conflict the book presents an exhaustive and up-to-date analysis of the political and cultural fault lines between Islamic revivalists and the British authorities. It will be useful for anyone studying Islam in the West government counter-terrorism and counter-extremism policy multiculturalism and social cohesion. | The Global Muslim Brotherhood in Britain Non-Violent Islamist Extremism and the Battle of Ideas

The Regulation of Dietary Supplements A Historical Analysis

Shipboard Life and Organisation 1731-1815

Shipboard Life and Organisation 1731-1815

The idea behind this volume according to its editor Brian Lavery was to give a rounded picture of life at sea during the age of sail. It concentrates on the daily routine of shipboard life rather than more dramatic events such as battles and mutiny. It supplements other volumes produced by the Navy Records Society notably Five Naval Journals 1789-1817 (vol 91 1951 ed H G Thursfield) and The Health of Seamen (vol 107 1965 ed C C Lloyd. )The selection begins in the second quarter of the eighteenth century because stated Brian Lavery ‘there are no suitable documents from earlier periods’ and closes in 1815 when the navy entered a new era with the advent of steam and a long period of peace. One of the most important aspects of shipboard life was that it was intensely self-contained especially in the later part of the age of sail. After the conquest of scurvy ships were able to stay at sea for many months at a time and the world-wide battle for empire caused them to make very long voyages often away from their home bases over a period of years. Even in port seamen often stayed on board and shore leave was not in any sense a right. This volume throws a spotlight on the way in which a crew of up to 850 men could be crammed into a small space for many months at a time and the ways in which they were fed clothed allocated space for eating and sleeping at the same time as they were organised for sailing and battle duties. It contains separate sections dealing with Admiralty Regulations Captain’s Orders Medical Journals discipline and punishment. It also includes an extensive glossary of the nautical terms and descriptions of the time. | Shipboard Life and Organisation 1731-1815

Nationalising the Crusades Engaging the Crusades Volume Eight

Nationalising the Crusades Engaging the Crusades Volume Eight

Engaging the Crusades is a series of concise volumes (up to 50 000 words) which offer initial windows into the ways in which the crusades have been used in the last two centuries demonstrating that the memory of the crusades is an important and emerging subject. Together these studies suggest that the memory of the crusades in the modern period is a productive exciting and much needed area of investigation. Despite their ‘intrinsic internationalism’ the crusades have long been conscripted for nationalist ends. The last decade has seen an upsurge in usage of the crusades to justify and inspire violence played out within and across national contexts. This volume furthers study of nationalist uses of the crusades and crusading by broadening the focus of study beyond north-western Europe and by showcasing different approaches to illustrate how the memory of the crusades has been employed within and between nations. This takes the form of tightly focused case studies and broader overviews covering the ambivalent role of foreign crusaders in Portuguese commemorations of the battle of Lisbon in 1947 Russian holy war rhetoric and theology Zionist perceptions of the crusader castle of ‘Athlit the role of individuals as ‘cultural brokers’ of crusader heritage amidst European imperial competition and how crusading as a part of European medievalism was received and reflected in Japan in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This book will be of interest to scholars and students considering national identity medievalism and religious violence and to those with specific interest in the contexts of each chapter. | Nationalising the Crusades Engaging the Crusades Volume Eight

Algarve Building Modernism Regionalism and Architecture in the South of Portugal 1925-1965

Algarve Building Modernism Regionalism and Architecture in the South of Portugal 1925-1965

Foreword by Adrian Forty. The Algarve is not only Portugal’s foremost tourism region. Uniquely Mediterranean in an Atlantic country its building customs have long been markers of historical and cultural specificity attracting both picturesque driven conservatives and modernists seeking their lineage. Modernism regionalism and the ‘vernacular’ – three essential tropes of twentieth-century architecture culture – converged in the region’s building identity construct and often the subject of strictly metropolitan elaborations they are examined here from a peripheral standpoint instead. Drawing on work that won the Royal Institute of British Architects President’s Award for Outstanding PhD Thesis in 2013 Algarve Building challenges the conventional inclusion of Portuguese modern architecture in ‘Critical Regionalism’ narratives. A fine-grain reconstruction of the debates and cultures at play locally exposes the extra-architectural and widely participated antecedents of the much-celebrated mid-century shift towards the regional. Uncelebrated architects and a cast of other players (clients officials engineers and builders) contributed to maturing a regional strand of modern architecture that more than being the heroic outcome of a hard-fought ‘battle’ by engaged designers against a conservative establishment became truly popular in the Algarve. Algarve Building shows more broadly what the processes that have been appropriated by the canon of architectural history and theory – such as the presence of folk traditions and regional variation in learned architecture – stand to gain when observed in local everyday practices. The grand narratives and petites histoires of architecture can be enriched questioned revised and confirmed by an unprejudiced return to its facts and sources – the buildings the documents the discourses the agents and the archives. | Algarve Building Modernism Regionalism and Architecture in the South of Portugal 1925-1965

Five Naval Journals 1789-1817

Five Naval Journals 1789-1817

These documents were selected by Rear-Admiral Thursfield for the light they throw on life afloat in the Navy of the Napoleonic era rather than for their contribution to the history of the operations in which their authors took part. They comprise four ‘Journals’ based mainly on dairies kept at the time and written up at a later date for enjoyment by the author’s friends and family. The fifth document is not a journal at all but the Order Book of a frigate captain. In addition eleven letters are included written by men from the lower deck. Each journal is headed by an Introduction which puts it in its historical context. The journal of the Rev Edward Mangin is a lively record of life aboard a 74-gun battleship in 1812 written by a clergyman who was deeply shocked by the events and deaths he witnessed. Four of the paintings he made on the Gloucester are reproduced. Peter Cullen’s journal covers the period 1789-1802 starting from the time he joined the Navy as an assistant surgeon. He gives a long account of the mutiny at the Nore and was present at Nelson’s battle at Copenhagen. Robert Wilson was a pressed man an able seaman promoted to be signalman on the smart frigate Unité from 1805 to 1809. His journal is packed with details of the many varied duties she undertook in the Mediterranean in the post-Trafalgar period and how these affected her officers and crew. Charles Abbot was a midshipman on the Alceste when she carried Lord Amherst to China as ambassador in 1816 and sank off Borneo on her return voyage. | Five Naval Journals 1789-1817
