Drug Control and International Law

Drug Control and International Law

This book provides for an extensive legal analysis of the international drug control system in light of the growing challenges and criticism that this system faces. In the current debate on global drug policy the central pillars of the international drug control system – the UN Drug Conventions as well as its institutions – are portrayed as outdated suppressive and seen as an obstacle to necessary changes. The book’s objective is to provide an in-depth and positivist insight into drug control’s present legal framework and thus provide for a better understanding of the normative assumptions upon which drug control is currently based. This is attained by clarifying the objectives of the international drug control system and the premises by which these objectives are to be achieved. The objective of the current global framework of international drug control is the limitation of drugs to medical and scientific purposes. The meaning of this objective and its concrete implications for States’ parties as well as its problems from the perspective of other regimes of international law most notably international human rights law are extensively analysed. Additionally the book focuses on how the international drug control system attempts to reach the objective of confining drugs to medical and scientific purposes i. e. by setting up a universal system that exercises a rigid control on drug supply. The consequences of this heavy focus on the reduction of drug supply are outlined and the book concludes by making suggestions on how the international drug control system could be reformed in the near future in order to better meet the existing challenges. The analysis occurs from a general international law perspective. It aims to map the international drug control system within a wider context of international law and to understand whether the problems that the international drug control system faces are exemplary for the difficulties that institutionalized systems of global scope face in the twenty-first century. | Drug Control and International Law

Regulation and Social Control of Incivilities

Regulation and Social Control of Incivilities

The increasing trend and prevalence of incivilities-targeting punitive regulatory measures across Europe raises important issues regarding the legitimacy effectiveness and impact of such formal social control. Regulation and Social Control of Incivilities addresses the pertinent issues of current punitive regulation and the social control of incivilities their trends criminological explanations political spatial cultural representational and policing dimensions as well as the underlying behaviour it targets. Part I explores issues surrounding the regulation of incivilities drawing examples from several European countries including Spain Italy Great Britain Belgium Slovenia and Hungary. It inspects the legal form and content of the prohibition of incivilities and the social factors that can help explain it as well as the effectiveness and societal impact of various anti-nuisance measures. Part II focuses on social control and the representation of incivilities including the construction and control of public nuisance in Belgium the spatial and cultural aspects of incivilities and of law enforcement against them the media representations of incivilities in the British and Flemish press and the intersections between migration and control of incivilities when policing in the Netherlands. This book brings together international scholars to examine the ways in which understudied European countries approach the issue of anti-social behaviour. This multidisciplinary text will be of interest to students scholars and policymakers concerned with issues of social control incivilities and criminalisation.

Modeling and Control of AC Machine using MATLAB /SIMULINK

Modeling and Control of AC Machine using MATLAB /SIMULINK

This book introduces electrical machine modeling and control for electrical engineering and science to graduate undergraduate students as well as researchers who are working on modeling and control of electrical machines. It targets electrical engineering students who have no time to derive mathematical equations for electrical machines in particular induction machine (IM) and doubly fed induction machines (DFIM). The main focus is on the application of field oriented control technique to induction motor (IM) and doubly fed induction motor (DFIM) in details and since the induction motors have many drawback using this technique therefore the application of a nonlinear control technique (feedback linearization) is applied to a reduced order model of DFIM to enhance the performance of doubly fed induction motor. FeaturesServes as text book for electrical motor modeling simulation and control; especially modeling of induction motor and doubly fed induction motor using different frame of references. Vector control (field oriented control) is given in more detailed and is applied to induction motor. A nonlinear controller is applied to a reduced model of an doubly induction motor associated with a linear observer to estimate the unmeasured load torque which is used to enhance the performance of the vector control to doubly fed induction motor. Access to the full MATLAB/SIMULINK blocks for simulation and control. | Modeling and Control of AC Machine using MATLAB®/SIMULINK

Statistical Process Control

Statistical Process Control

The business commercial and public-sector world has changed dramatically since John Oakland wrote the first edition of Statistical Process Control – a practical guide in the mid-eighties. Then people were rediscovering statistical methods of ‘quality control’ and the book responded to an often desperate need to find out about the techniques and use them on data. Pressure over time from organizations supplying directly to the consumer typically in the automotive and high technology sectors forced those in charge of the supplying production and service operations to think more about preventing problems than how to find and fix them. Subsequent editions retained the ‘took kit’ approach of the first but included some of the ‘philosophy’ behind the techniques and their use. The theme which runs throughout the 7th edition is still processes - that require understanding have variation must be properly controlled have a capability and need improvement - the five sections of this new edition. SPC never has been and never will be simply a ‘took kit’ and in this book the authors provide not only the instructional guide for the tools but communicate the management practices which have become so vital to success in organizations throughout the world. The book is supported by the authors' extensive and latest consulting work within thousands of organisations worldwide. Fully updated to include real-life case studies new research based on client work from an array of industries and integration with the latest computer methods and Minitab software the book also retains its valued textbook quality through clear learning objectives and end of chapter discussion questions. It can still serve as a textbook for both student and practicing engineers scientists technologists managers and for anyone wishing to understand or implement modern statistical process control techniques.
