The Music and Noise of the Stooges 1967-71 Lost in the Future

The Music and Noise of the Stooges 1967-71 Lost in the Future

The Stooges have come to be considered one of the most important rock bands especially in regard to the formation of punk. By emphasizing their influence on later developments however critics tend to overlook the significance of the band in their own context and era. The Music and Noise of the Stooges 1967-71 addresses such oversights. Utilizing the lenses of cultural criticism and sound studies (drawing on the thinking of Theodor Adorno Jacques Attali and Pierre Bourdieu among others) as well as contemporary and archival texts this extensively researched study analyzes the trajectory and musical output of the original Stooges. During the late 1960s and early 70s a moment when the dissonant energy of rock’n’roll was more than ever being subsumed by the record industry the Stooges were initially commercial failures with the band’s noisy music and singer Iggy Pop’s bizarre onstage performances confusing their label Elektra Records. As Begnal argues the Stooges embodied a tension between market forces and an innovative avant-garde artistic vision as they sought to liberate audiences from passivity and stimulate an immanent joy in the rock’n’roll moment. This book offers a fresh perspective on the Stooges that will appeal both to rock fans and scholars (especially in the fields of cultural studies the long Sixties musicology punk studies and performance studies). | The Music and Noise of the Stooges 1967-71 Lost in the Future

Traumatic Experiences of Normal Development An Intersubjective Object Relations Listening Perspective on Self Attachment Trauma and Reality

Traumatic Experiences of Normal Development An Intersubjective Object Relations Listening Perspective on Self Attachment Trauma and Reality

Traditionally trauma has been defined as negatively impacting external events with resulting damage. This book puts forth an entirely different thesis: trauma is universal occurring under even the best of circumstances and unavoidably sculpting the very building blocks of character structure. In Traumatic Experiences of Normal Development Dr. Carl Shubs depathologizes the experience of trauma by presenting a listening perspective which helps recognize the presence and effects of traumatic experiences of normal development (TEND) by using a reconstruction of object relations theory. This outlook redefines trauma as the breach in intrapsychic organization of Self Affect and Other (SAO) the three components of object relations units which combine to form intricate and changeable constellations that are no less than the total experience of living in any given moment. Bridging the gap between the trauma and analytic communities as well as integrating intrapsychic and relational frameworks the SAO/ TEND perspective provides a trauma-based band of attunement for attending to all relational encounters including those occurring in therapy. Though targeted to mental health professionals this book will help enable therapists and sophisticated lay readers alike to recognize the impact of relational encounters providing new tools to understand the traumas we have experienced and to minimize the hold they have on us. | Traumatic Experiences of Normal Development An Intersubjective Object Relations Listening Perspective on Self Attachment Trauma and Reality

Remote Sensing of Night-time Light

Remote Sensing of Night-time Light

Satellite images acquired at night provide a visually arresting perspective of the Earth and the human activities that light up the otherwise mostly dark Earth. These night-time light satellite images can be compiled into a geospatial time series that represent an invaluable source of information for both the natural and social sciences. Night-time light remote sensing has been shown to be particularly useful for a range of natural science and social science applications including studies relating to urban development demography sociology fishing activity light pollution and the consequences of civil war. Key sensors for these time-series include the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program’s Operational Linescan System (DMSP/OLS) and the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership Satellite’s Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite Day/Night Band (Suomi NPP/VIIRS DNB). An increasing number of alternative sources are also available including high spatial resolution and multispectral sensors. This book captures key methodological issues associated with pre-processing night-time light data documents state of the art analysis methods and explores a wide range of applications. Major sections focus on NPP/VIIRS DNB processing; inter-calibration between NPP/VIIRS and DMPS/OLS; applications associated with socio-economic activities applications in monitoring urbanization; and fishing activity monitoring. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the International Journal of Remote Sensing. | Remote Sensing of Night-time Light

The Discourse of Protest Resistance and Social Commentary in Reggae Music A Bakhtinian Analysis of Pacific Reggae

A comprehensive engaging and timely Bakhtinian examination of the ways in which the music and lyrics of Pacific reggae aspects of performance a record album cover and the social and political context construct social commentary resistance and protest. Framed predominantly by the theory and philosophy of Russian literary theorist Mikhail Bakhtin this innovative investigation of the discourse of Pacific reggae in New Zealand produces a multi-faceted analysis of the dialogic relationships that create meaning in this genre of popular music. It focuses on the award-winning EP What’s Be Happen? by the band Herbs which has been recognised for its ground-breaking music and social commentary in the early 1980s. Herbs’ songs address the racism and ideology of the apartheid regime in South Africa and the relationship between sport and politics as well as universally relevant conflicts over race relations the experiences of migrants and the historic and ongoing loss of indigenous people’s lands. The book demonstrates the striking compatibility between Bakhtin’s theorisation of utterances as ethical acts and reggae music along with the Rastafari philosophy that underpins it which speaks of resistance to social injustice of ethical values and the kind of society people seek to achieve. It will appeal to a cross-disciplinary audience of scholars in Bakhtin studies; discourse analysis; popular cultural studies; the literary analysis of popular music and lyrics and those with an interest in the culture and politics of Aotearoa New Zealand and the Pacific region.
