Computational Fluid Dynamics and COMSOL Multiphysics A Step-by-Step Approach for Chemical Engineers

Computational Fluid Dynamics and COMSOL Multiphysics A Step-by-Step Approach for Chemical Engineers

This textbook covers computational fluid dynamics simulation using COMSOL Multiphysics® Modeling Software in chemical engineering applications. In the volume the COMSOL Multiphysics package is introduced and applied to solve typical problems in chemical reactors transport processes fluid flow and heat and mass transfer. Inspired by the difficulties of introducing the use of COMSOL Multiphysics software during classroom time the book incorporates the author’s experience of working with undergraduate graduate and postgraduate students to make the book user friendly and that at the same time addresses typical examples within the subjects covered in the chemical engineering curriculum. Real-world problems require the use of simulation and optimization tools and this volume shows how COMSOL Multiphysics software can be used for that purpose. Key features:• Includes over 500 step-by-step screenshots• Shows the graphical user interface of COMSOL which does not require any programming effort• Provides chapter-end problems for extensive practice along with solutions• Includes actual examples of chemical reactors transport processes fluid flow and heat and mass transfer This book is intended for students who want or need more help to solve chemical engineering assignments using computer software. It can also be used for computational courses in chemical engineering. It will also be a valuable resource for professors research scientists and practicing engineers. | Computational Fluid Dynamics and COMSOL Multiphysics A Step-by-Step Approach for Chemical Engineers

Introduction to Plant Automation and Controls

Introduction to Plant Automation and Controls

Introduction to Plant Automation and Controls addresses all aspects of modern central plant control systems including instrumentation control theory plant systems VFDs PLCs and supervisory systems. Design concepts and operational behavior of various plants are linked to their control philosophies in a manner that helps new or experienced engineers understand the process behind controls installation programming and troubleshooting of automated systems. This groundbreaking book ties modern electronic-based automation and control systems to the special needs of plants and equipment. It applies practical plant operating experience electronic-equipment design and plant engineering to bring a unique approach to aspects of plant controls including security programming languages and digital theory. The multidimensional content supported with 500 illustrations ties together all aspects of plant controls into a single-source reference of otherwise difficult-to-find information. The increasing complexity of plant control systems requires engineers who can relate plant operations and behaviors to their control requirements. This book is ideal for readers with limited electrical and electronic experience particularly those looking for a multidisciplinary approach for obtaining a practical understanding of control systems related to the best operating practices of large or small plants. It is an invaluable resource for becoming an expert in this field or as a single-source reference for plant control systems. Author Raymond F. Gardner is a professor of engineering at the U. S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point New York and has been a practicing engineer for more than 40 years.

Architecture and Extraction in the Atlantic World 1500-1850

Architecture and Extraction in the Atlantic World 1500-1850

This edited collection examines the development of Atlantic World architecture after 1492. In particular the chapters explore the landscapes of extraction as material networks that brought people space and labor together in harvesting raw materials cultivating agriculture for export-level profits and circulating raw materials and commodities in Europe Africa and the Americas from 1500 to 1850. This book argues that histories of extraction remain incomplete without careful attention to the social physical and mental nexus that is architecture just as architecture’s development in the last 500 years cannot be adequately comprehended without attention to empire extraction colonialism and the rise of what Immanuel Wallerstein has called the world system. This world system was possible because of built environments that enabled resource extraction transport of raw materials circulation of commodities and enactment of power relations in the struggle between capital and labor. Separated into three sections: Harvesting the Environment Cultivating Profit and Circulating Commodities: Networks and Infrastructures this volume covers a wide range of geographies from England to South America from Africa to South Carolina. The book aims to decenter Eurocentric approaches to architectural history to expose the global circulation of ideas things commodities and people that constituted the architecture of extraction in the Atlantic World. In focusing on extraction we aim to recover histories of labor exploitation and racialized oppression of interest to the global community. The book will be of interest to researchers and students of architectural history geography urban and labor history literary studies historic preservation and colonial studies. | Architecture and Extraction in the Atlantic World 1500-1850

LeanSpeak The Productivity Business Improvement Dictionary

LeanSpeak The Productivity Business Improvement Dictionary

This dictionary specific to lean business processes contains over 500 terms used in lean management and manufacturing. Easy to access accurate and comprehensive LeanSpeak will become the desktop tool of choice for lean manufacturing practitioners from the shop floor to the corner office. Here are some examples of entries in LeanSpeak:gemba: Japanese word of which the literal translation is the real place. In the manufacturing field gemba means the shop floor where the actual product is being made as contrasted to the office where support services are provided. lean: shorthand to refer to a lean manufacturing system of which the Toyota Production System is the foremost example that has relatively little non-value-adding waste and maximum flow. The term has been used pejoratively to refer to anti-labor practices intending to reduce the number of workers within a company and to strong-arm tactics with suppliers. takt time: the rate at which product must be turned out to satisfy market demand. It is determined by dividing the available production time by the rate of customer demand. For example if customers demand 240 widgets per day and the factory operates 480 minutes per day takt time is two minutes. If customers want two new products designed per month takt time is two weeks. It is a calculated number not a reflection of your capability. It sets the pace of production to match the rate of customer demand.
