Labour and Capital Use in Indian Manufacturing Structural Aspects

Labour and Capital Use in Indian Manufacturing Structural Aspects

This book strengthens our understanding of Indian manufacturing. It argues that structural transformation should be guided by the given factor endowments. The book undertakes detailed empirical scrutiny to provide inputs for guiding the future industrial policy in India. The book recognises the differential structure of organised and unorganised manufacturing with their distinguished response to the use of labour and capital. The analytical framework consists of an economy-wide approach and structural relationships at the industry level. The underlying sectoral interdependence highlights the job creation potential of domestic manufacturing which spreads into the non-manufacturing sectors through the essential accounting of the embodied effects. The impact of import utilisations underscores the leakages in the domestic economy in terms of the employment forgone and capital use thereby highlighting the need to strengthen domestic production. The book clearly identifies the labour- and capital-intensive categories of manufacturing for empirical investigations. A comprehensive read on labour and capital use in Indian manufacturing this book in the series Sustainable Industrial Development will appeal to scholars and researchers of economics applied industrial economics Indian economy and business studies. It will also be of interest to professionals and practitioners in policy circles and research think tanks. | Labour and Capital Use in Indian Manufacturing Structural Aspects

Banach Limit and Applications

Banach Limit and Applications

Banach Limit and Applications provides all the results in the area of Banach Limit its extensions generalizations and applications to various fields in one go (as far as possible). All the results in this field after Banach introduced this concept in 1932 were scattered till now. Sublinear functionals generating and dominating Banach Limit unique Banach Limit (almost convergence) invariant means and invariant limits absolute and strong almost convergence applications to ergodicity law of large numbers Fourier series uniform distribution of sequences uniform density core theorems and functional Banach limits are discussed in this book. The discovery of functional analysis such as the Hahn-Banach Theorem and the Banach-Steinhaus Theorem helped the researchers to develop a modern rich and unified theory of sequence spaces by encompassing classical summability theory via matrix transformations and the topics related to sequence spaces which arose from the concept of Banach limits all of which are presented in this book. The unique features of this book are as follows: All the results in this area which were scattered till now are in one place. The book is the first of its kind in the sense that there is no other competitive book. The contents of this monograph did not appear in any book form before. The audience of this book are the researchers in this area and Ph. D. and advanced master’s students. The book is suitable for one- or two-semester course work for Ph. D. students M. S. students in North America and Europe and M. Phil. and master’s students in India.

Advances in Processing Technology

Advances in Processing Technology

The present book is an amalgamation of various topics which are quite relevant to academics pertaining to food science and technology. Sincere attempts have been made to map consumer's perception in terms of sensory evaluation of processed foods and their role on quality determination. To cover food safety the topic of advancement in the traceability and transparency of food supply chain is discussed in length. Besides providing basic nutrition food has become an essential source of health promoting phyto-ingredients too. To take care of the concerned population therapeutic foods have also been discussed with their future trends. Similarly recent trends in functional and Nutraceutical foods were also discussed in detail so as to give an exhaustive overlook of such subject matter. To give impetus to the growing and aged generations the importance of the technology of weaning and geriatric foods is described in detail. Bio-preservation of various food products including fermentation had always attracted researchers for various reasons inclusive of its novel and chemical free approach of preservation which has been aptly covered under current expansions in microbiology for food preservation and also under progression in biotechnology and its application in food processing. The cross linkage of advance technologies inclusive of nano-science is elaborated as technological advances in nano- science for specific food and nutrition delivery. Oil and spice commerce are two giants pillars in food processing industries and readers would surely be wishing to understand the developments in the technology of oils refineries and condiments. Smart and intelligent packing systems always extend an upper hand as far as shelf life monitoring of any processed food is concerned especially when these are import worthy products. The science and technological approach of these packing innovations is also well covered. Note: T&F does not sell or distribute the hardback in India Pakistan Nepal Bhutan Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The Anarchists

The Anarchists

In his new introduction to The Anarchists Horowitz points out that anarchism is an ideology in search of a movement and also a psychology in search of a polity. While this seems to be a paradox the fact is that anarchism has more than one hundred thousand entries on electronic search engines but one can search high and low for a society that embraces its essential anti-Statist vision. At the same time anarchism continues to attract people to its premises seemingly generation after generation. Despite similarities in values and goals anarchism seems especially attractive to those for whom individualism rather than collectivism provides a way of life. In this it stands at the opposite pole from Behemoth from the gods of political order. The Anarchists is a rich collection of theories and practices in the words of those who have rebelled against the restrictive institutions and oppressive conditions imposed by state power upon the individual. Idealists and self-seekers saints and assassins they have often served as the conscience of the world and have expressed with eloquence and convictions the deep-seated sense of anarchy that resides to a greater or lesser degree in most human beings. Anarchism is not simply a European import; it is deeply rooted in the American political experience. The volume gives strong representation to this side of the anarchist tradition. Thomas Paine wrote Government even in its best state is but a necessary evil. This was a sentiment echoed by Ralph Waldo Emerson who said the less government we have the better. The Anarchists offers the most thoughtful and comprehensive selection of writings by and about those who protest against all rule by man over man particularly that embodied in the State. As such this anthology presents the history and philosophy of anarchism in the words of thirty-five of its greatest students observers and proponents.

A History of Child Welfare

A History of Child Welfare

As we approach the year 2000 infant mortality rates child placement dilemmas and appropriate socialization of children continue to challenge the field of child welfare. It is thus especially significant to reflect on the history of child welfare. The carefully selected topics explored in this volume underscore the importance of recovering past events and themes still relevant. It is the aim of this volume to illumine current issues by a review of past struggles and problems. A History of Child Welfare offers many examples of practices that have direct import for those who struggle to support children. Who is not bothered by what seem to be increasing acts of violence by children against children? The role of hidden cruelty to children in perpetuating violence is illuminated by studying the past. Historians and social researchers have gone far in examining the family and by implication their revelations greatly increase society's complex responses to children over time from early assumptions that children were little more than miniature adults to the discovery of childhood as a special developmental period. At the start of this century women still did not have universal suffrage and brutal child labor was not unusual. Harsh legal codes separating the races were widespread and those bent on improving the lot of children knew that reform meant commitment to an uphill struggle. By the end of the century much has changed: child labor while still present has been outlawed in most industries women vote and hold many high offices; and de jure racial segregation is largely a memory. Yet the state of children remains precarious with poverty a persistent theme throughout the century. The fifteen articles in this volume cover a wide range of social conditions public policies and approaches to problem solving. Though history does not repeat itself precisely problems controversies about solutions and certain themes do. A History of Child Welfare takes up social and economic conditions that correlate with increasing rates of child abuse and neglect and an increasing number of children in out-of-home care. This volume distinguishes approaches that have been useful from those that have failed. In this way these serious reflections help build on past successes and avoid previous errors.

Lactic acid fermentation of human excreta for agricultural application

Lactic acid fermentation of human excreta for agricultural application

Human excreta is a valuable fertilizer for improving soil quality and crop productivity with a potential to replace or complement the mineral fertilizers. The main challenges related to human excreta regarding agricultural applications are microbial contamination risks loss of nutrients and odor issues. Fertilization by lacto-fermented faeces supplemented by biochar has benefits such as improved soil bulk density nitrate and potassium concentrations as well as the yield and yield components of corn compared to untreated simple stored faeces urine cattle manure and unfertilized controls. Even though the mineral fertilizer produced corn with significantly higher height and leaf length it did not add significantly higher yields than lacto-fermented faeces supplemented by biochar. A faeces treatment process by combined lacto-fermentation with thermophilic composting and biochar supplementation had better reduction of coliforms Escherichia coli Enterococcus faecalis and Clostridium perfringens and higher germination of radish and growth of tomatoes than combined lacto-fermentation with vermicomposting. Urine lacto-fermentation contributed to a pH reduction below 4 a decrease in the ammonium concentration and odor strength as well as an increase in the germination rates compared to untreated stored urine. The results of this study provide important information that can set the basis for scaling up a sustainable technology for the treatment of source separated human excreta while improving its potential for resource recovery. | Lactic acid fermentation of human excreta for agricultural application

Pencils of Cubics and Algebraic Curves in the Real Projective Plane

Pencils of Cubics and Algebraic Curves in the Real Projective Plane

Pencils of Cubics and Algebraic Curves in the Real Projective Plane thoroughly examines the combinatorial configurations of n generic points in RP². Especially how it is the data describing the mutual position of each point with respect to lines and conics passing through others. The first section in this book answers questions such as can one count the combinatorial configurations up to the action of the symmetric group? How are they pairwise connected via almost generic configurations? These questions are addressed using rational cubics and pencils of cubics for n = 6 and 7. The book’s second section deals with configurations of eight points in the convex position. Both the combinatorial configurations and combinatorial pencils are classified up to the action of the dihedral group D8. Finally the third section contains plentiful applications and results around Hilbert’s sixteenth problem. The author meticulously wrote this book based upon years of research devoted to the topic. The book is particularly useful for researchers and graduate students interested in topology algebraic geometry and combinatorics. Features: Examines how the shape of pencils depends on the corresponding configurations of points Includes topology of real algebraic curves Contains numerous applications and results around Hilbert’s sixteenth problem About the Author: Séverine Fiedler-le Touzé has published several papers on this topic and has been invited to present at many conferences. She holds a Ph. D. from University Rennes1 and was a post-doc at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley California.
