Fortran 2018 with Parallel Programming

Fortran 2018 with Parallel Programming

The programming language Fortran dates back to 1957 when a team of IBM engineers released the first Fortran Compiler. During the past 60 years the language had been revised and updated several times to incorporate more features to enable writing clean and structured computer programs. The present version is Fortran 2018. Since the dawn of the computer era there had been a constant demand for a “larger” and “faster” machine. To increase the speed there are three hurdles. The density of the active components on a VLSI chip cannot be increased indefinitely and with the increase of the density heat dissipation becomes a major problem. Finally the speed of any signal cannot exceed the velocity of the light. However by using several inexpensive processors in parallel coupled with specialized software and hardware programmers can achieve computing speed similar to a supercomputer. This book can be used to learn the modern Fortran from the beginning and the technique of developing parallel programs using Fortran. It is for anyone who wants to learn Fortran. Knowledge beyond high school mathematics is not required. There is not another book on the market yet which deals with Fortran 2018 as well as parallel programming. FEATURES Descriptions of majority of Fortran 2018 instructions Numerical Model String with Variable Length IEEE Arithmetic and Exceptions Dynamic Memory Management Pointers Bit handling C-Fortran Interoperability Object Oriented Programming Parallel Programming using Coarray Parallel Programming using OpenMP Parallel Programming using Message Passing Interface (MPI) THE AUTHOR Dr Subrata Ray is a retired Professor Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science Kolkata. | Fortran 2018 with Parallel Programming

Regularized Image Reconstruction in Parallel MRI with MATLAB

Regularized Image Reconstruction in Parallel MRI with MATLAB

Regularization becomes an integral part of the reconstruction process in accelerated parallel magnetic resonance imaging (pMRI) due to the need for utilizing the most discriminative information in the form of parsimonious models to generate high quality images with reduced noise and artifacts. Apart from providing a detailed overview and implementation details of various pMRI reconstruction methods Regularized image reconstruction in parallel MRI with MATLAB examples interprets regularized image reconstruction in pMRI as a means to effectively control the balance between two specific types of error signals to either improve the accuracy in estimation of missing samples or speed up the estimation process. The first type corresponds to the modeling error between acquired and their estimated values. The second type arises due to the perturbation of k-space values in autocalibration methods or sparse approximation in the compressed sensing based reconstruction model. Features: Provides details for optimizing regularization parameters in each type of reconstruction. Presents comparison of regularization approaches for each type of pMRI reconstruction. Includes discussion of case studies using clinically acquired data. MATLAB codes are provided for each reconstruction type. Contains method-wise description of adapting regularization to optimize speed and accuracy. This book serves as a reference material for researchers and students involved in development of pMRI reconstruction methods. Industry practitioners concerned with how to apply regularization in pMRI reconstruction will find this book most useful.

Serial Communication Protocols and Standards

Serial Communication Protocols and Standards

Data communication standards are comprised of two components: The “protocol” and “Signal/data/port specifications for the devices involved”. The protocol describes the format of the message and the meaning of each part of the message. To connect any device to the bus an external device must be used as an interface which will put the message in a form which fulfills all the electrical specifications of the port. These specifications are called the “Standard”. The most famous such serial communication standard is the RS-232. In IT technology Communication can be serial or parallel. Serial communication is used for transmitting data over long distances. It is much cheaper to run the single core cable needed for serial communication over a long distance than the multicore cables that would be needed for parallel communication. It is the same in wireless communication: Serial communication needs one channel while parallel needs multichannel. Serial Communication can also be classified in many other ways for example synchronous and asynchronous; it can also be classified as simplex duplex and half duplex. Because of the wide spread of serial communication from home automation to sensor and controller networks there is a need for a very large number of serial communication standards and protocols. These have been developed over recent decades and range from the simple to the highly complicated. This large number of protocols was necessary to guarantee the optimum performance for the targeted applications. It is important for communication engineers to have enough knowledge to match the right protocol and standard with the right application. The main aim of this book is to provide the reader with that knowledgeThe book also provides the reader with detailed information about:- Serial Communication- Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter (UART)- Universal Synchronous/Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter (USART - Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) - eSPI- Universal Serial Bus (USB)- Wi-Fi- WiMax- InsteonThe details of each technology including specification operation security related matters and many other topics are covered. The book allocates three chapters to the main communication standards. These chapters cover everything related to the most famous standard RS-232 and all its variants. Other protocols such as: I2C CAN ZigBee Z-Wave Bluetooth and others are the subject of the authors separate book “Microcontroller and Smart Home Networks”. | Serial Communication Protocols and Standards

Lying in the Dark Room Architectures of British Maternity

Lying in the Dark Room Architectures of British Maternity

Lying in the Dark Room: Architectures of British Maternity returns to and reflects on the spatial and architectural experience of childbirth through both a critical history of maternity spaces and a creative exploration of those we use today. Where conventional architectural histories objectify buildings (in parallel with the objectification of the maternal body) the book—in the mode of creative practice research—presents a creative-critical autotheory of the architecture of lying-in. It uses feminist subjective modes of thinking that travel across disciplines registers and arguments. The book assesses the transformation of maternity spaces—from the female bedchamber of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century marital homes to the lying-in hospitals of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries purposely built by man-midwives to the late twentieth-century spaces of home and the modern hospital maternity wing—and the parallel shifts in maternal practices. The spaces are not treated as mute or neutral backdrops to maternal history but as a series of vital entangled atmospheres materials practices and objects that are produced by and in turn produce particular social and political conditions gendered structures and experiences. Moving across spaces systems protagonists and their subjectivities the book shows how hospital design and protocol altered ordinary birth at home and continues to shape maternal spatial experience today. As such it will be of interest to a wide range of readers from architectural historians theoreticians designers and students to medical humanities historians to English Literature humanities and material studies scholars as well as those interested in creative-critical writing. | Lying in the Dark Room Architectures of British Maternity

Assessing Maritime Disputes in East Asia Political and Legal Perspectives

Assessing Maritime Disputes in East Asia Political and Legal Perspectives

Combining practical and theoretical approaches this book addresses the political legal and economic implications of maritime disputes in East Asia. The maritime disputes in East Asia have multiplied over the past few years in parallel with the economic growth of the countries in the region the rise of nationalist movements fears and sometimes fantasies regarding the emergence of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) as a global power increasing military expenses as well as speculations regarding the potential resources in various disputed islands. These disputes however are not new and some have been the subject of contention and the cause of friction for decades if not centuries in a few cases. Offering a robust analysis this volume explores disputes through the different lenses of political science international law history and geography and introduces new approaches in particular to the four important disputes concerning Dokdo/Takeshima Senkaku/Diaoyu Paracels and Spratlys. Utilising a comparative approach this book identifies transnational trends that occur in the different cases and therefore at the regional level and aims to understand whether the resurgence of maritime disputes in East Asia may be studied on a case by case basis or should be analysed as a regional phenomenon with common characteristics. This book will be of interest to students of Asian Politics Maritime Security International Security Geopolitics and International Relations in general. | Assessing Maritime Disputes in East Asia Political and Legal Perspectives

Reading Paul Howard The Art of Ross O'Carroll-Kelly

Reading Paul Howard The Art of Ross O'Carroll-Kelly

Reading Paul Howard: The Art of Ross O’Carroll Kelly offers a thorough examination of narrative devices satirical modes cultural context and humour in Howard’s texts. The volume argues that his academic critical neglect is due to a classic bifurcation in Irish Studies between high and popular culture and it will use the thought of Pierre Bourdieu Sigmund Freud Mikhail Bakhtin and Jacques Derrida to critique this division building a theoretical platform from which to examine the significance of Howard’s work as an Irish comic and satirical writer. Addressing both the style and the substance of his work this text locates him in a tradition of Irish satirical writing that dates back to the Gaelic bards and it includes writers like Swift Wilde Flann O’Brien and Joyce. Through textual and contextual analysis this book makes the case for Howard as a significant and original voice in Irish writing whose fusion of the three traditional types of satire (Horatian Juvenalian and Menippean) has created a parallel Ireland that shines a satirical light on its real counterpart. As Freud suggests humour is a way of accessing aspects of the psyche that normative discourses cannot enunciate and Howard through the confessional voice of Ross offers a fictive truth on 20 years of Irish society a truth that is not accessed by discourse in the public sphere or by what could be termed literary or high cultural fiction. | Reading Paul Howard The Art of Ross O'Carroll-Kelly

Field Theory of Nonimaging Optics

Field Theory of Nonimaging Optics

This book aims to overcome the traditional ray paradigm and provide an analytical paradigm for Nonimaging Optics based on Field Theory. As a second objective the authors address the connections between this Field Theory of Nonimaging Optics and other radiative transfer theories. The book introduces the Field Theory of Nonimaging Optics as a new analytical paradigm not statistical to analyze problems in the frame of nonimaging geometrical optics with a formulation based on field theory of irradiance vector D. This new paradigm provides new principles and tools in the optical system design methods complementary to flowline method overcoming the classical ray paradigm. This new Field paradigm can be considered as a generalization of the ray paradigm and new accurate and faster computation algorithms will be developed. In a parallel way the advance in the knowledge of the principles of Field Theory of Nonimaging Optics has produced clear advances in the connection between nonimaging optics and other apparently disconnected theories of radiation transfer. The irradiance vector D can be considered as the macroscopic average of Poynting vector with a clear connection with radiation pressure. Lorentz geometry techniques can also be applied to study irradiance vector D. There are clear thermodynamic connections between the nonimaging concentrator and Stefan-Boltzmann law of radiation. From this thermodynamic connection nonimaging optics and irradiance vector D can also be studied from a phase space point of view. This book is intended for researchers graduate students academics and professionals looking to analyze design and optimize optical systems.
