Values and Technology Religion and Public Life

Values and Technology Religion and Public Life

In 1749 Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Discourse on the Arts and Sciences surprised leading Enlightenment thinkers who had enthusiastically upheld the positive benefits of humanity's technological advance. Voltaire who celebrated the ends of civilization mocked Rousseau's praise for an original creative state of nature in which man enjoyed an optimum level of freedom. Given the unprecedented intrusion of technology into our lives the question raised by Rousseau's critique may be even more pertinent. In this volume of Religion and Public Life contributors address some of the challenges to conventional morality brought on by the technological augmentation of the social structure. John Barker's essay explores how Luciano Floridi's philosophy of technology has complicated the conventional way of determining what ought to receive moral consideration. Fani Zlatarova provides a practical guide for incorporating ethical components into teaching computer technology. Grant Havers explores the controversies surrounding the biogenetic explosion through an examination of the competing philosophical perspectives and Christopher Vassilopolos examines the science-based justification for taking life. Gabriel R. Ricci looks at recent political history in the United States in order to highlight the sometimes uneasy relationship between science and social policy. Volume 37 is a welcome addition to the acclaimed Religion and Public Life series. | Values and Technology Religion and Public Life

Identity Community and Sexuality in Slash Fan Fiction Pocket Publics

Identity Community and Sexuality in Slash Fan Fiction Pocket Publics

This book explores slash fan fiction communities during the pivotal years of the late 1990s and early 2000s as the practice transitioned from print to digital circulation. Delving into over ten years of online and in-person ethnography the book offers an in-depth examination of slash fan fiction – original stories written by and circulated within female-centered communities about same-sex characters borrowed from previously published sources – to document the history of a feminist queer media subculture whose infrastructure creativity and ways of life are often obscured in dominant histories of the internet’s development and by the contemporary focus on industry-friendly but often misogynist digital fan subcultures. Arguing that online slash communities created an alternate public space that provided opportunities for unanticipated encounters with a wide range of complex sexual relational and political practices the book contends that slash thereby added to readers’ tools for experiencing and thinking about pleasure and ways of living by forming a “pocket public ” that is a digital space public enough to be found and protected enough to shield participants from harassment and censorship. This insightful and comprehensive study will interest students and scholars working in the areas of media studies literary studies anthropology new media audience communities convergence culture fan studies women’s studies and queer studies. F.D. Ascoli Early Revenue History of Bengal and The Fifth Report 1812

F.D. Ascoli Early Revenue History of Bengal and The Fifth Report 1812

Early Revenue History of Bengal and the Fifth Report 1812 was the outcome of a series of four lectures delivered at the Dacca College by the distinguished Bengali civil servant F. D. Ascoli. It embodies the text of the Fifth Report on the affairs of the East India Company by the Select Committee of the House of Commons appointed with a view to form the charter of 1813 and also careful and detailed summary of the discussions that led up to Lord Cornwallis's Permanent Revenue Settlement of Bengal (including Behar). The condensed arguments of Mr. James Grant Sir John Shore and Lord Cornwallis on the subject of the Permanent Settlement enable us to see the objectives desired for in the Permanent Revenue Settlement. The book also affords valuable glimpses on the methods adopted for carrying out the settlement and working it successfully in the early days when the zamindars themselves did not look upon it as a boon and the sale of estates for arrears were frequent. Ascoli's excellent and dispassionate account of the Company’s difficulties and the unsuccessful remedies that were from time to time applied to meet them disposes of pet theories that are sometimes advanced with regard to the Permanent Settlement. Mr. Ascoli's masterly analysis and partial text of the Fifth Report from the Select Committee 1812 will be of material assistance to students of revenue history in Bengal and of Colonial India generally.
